}}"And All That Could Have Been" is the seventh track on Still, which was released with the Deluxe Edition CD version of And All That Could Have Been and was available for mail-order with the purchase of the DVD version and is currently available for order through NIN.com.

It may be one of NIN's most complex songs regarding time signature, as the verses are in 7/4, the choruses in 4/4, and part of the bridge in 6/8.

"AATCHB" features guitar distortion and the layering of multiple guitar effects often found in songs of the "Shoegaze" subgenre—bands such as My Bloody Valentine (with whom NIN's usual mixer, Alan Moulder, worked) and The Jesus and Mary Chain (who NIN opened for back in 1989).
And All That Could Have Been
This is the only available version. Softly falling rain, continued from the end of "The Day the World Went Away," begins the song, soon joined by quiet atmospheric synthesizers playing sustained, ascending notes. These lead into the first verse, a still-quiet 7/4 combination of soft electric guitars and Reznor's melodic vocals. The verse gives way to a quiet, instrumental bridge where bass guitar and piano join in, playing the melody and chord sequence from the climax of "The Great Below" in 4/4. A second verse, again in 7/4, interrupts this bridge with a return to the verse guitars, vocals, and icy percussion loops. After reaching into his higher vocal range for the second half of this verse, Reznor sings the 4/4 chorus in a lower, more up-front and talkative voice, backed by a new guitar riff, picked bass, and drum loops focal on the toms. A second bridge follows, introduced by a solitary delayed electric guitar riff, then louder layers of strumming guitar and bass with a new lead melody in 6/8, then a return to the 7/4 verse guitar riff atmospheres, during which Reznor quietly sings sparse words, building in volume and emotion until the words "... could have been" lead into an instrumental reiteration of the chorus. After singing a different incarnation of the chorus, Reznor's vocals give way to a higher-register return of the melody from the very first 4/4 bridge of the song beneath the chorus, with all instruments stopping at the end of the final bar, leaving a distant echo that quickly fades away.

"And All That Could Have Been" has never been played live. Justin Meldal-Johnsen confirmed via Twitter that it was rehearsed for the Wave Goodbye Tour
Lyrics
Breeze still carries the sound
Maybe I'll disappear
Tracks will fade in the snow
You won't find me here

Ice is starting to form
Ending what had begun
I am locked in my head
With what I've done
I know you tried to rescue me
Didn't let anyone get in
Left with a trace of all that was
And all that could have been

Please
Take this
And run far away
Far away from me
I am
Tainted
The two of us
Were never meant to be
All these
Pieces
And promises and left behinds
If only I could see
In my
Nothing
You meant everything
Everything to me
Gone fading everything
And all that could have been

Please
Take this
And run far away
Far as you can see
I am
Tainted
And happiness and peace of mind
Were never meant for me
All these
Pieces
And promises and left behinds
If only I could see
In my
Nothing
You meant everything
}}"The Perfect Drug" was written and recorded for the Lost Highway Soundtrack in 1997.

Trent Reznor has expressed dissatisfaction with the song, saying in a VIVA 2 Magazine interview,
"At that time I was listening to a lot of Drum 'n' Bass and Jungle and stuff. And I think that's the most I've ever seen external influence come out in my own music. And it was a transition period, that's what I want to stress, it was time when I was feeling out what I wanted to do artistically and given the liberation of working within the context of a soundtrack, it's not like a major work. I always treated that as an area to be freer and try things. I'm glad it was in that context. There was never any consideration to include that on [The Fragile]. It really was an area where I was feeling out the landscape to see what I wanted to do."
Versions
The Perfect Drug
This is the original version that can be found on the Lost Highway soundtrack as well as some versions of The Perfect Drug Versions. It features prominent acoustic guitars playing a quick, ascending riff similar to the chorus of The Wretched. It is backed by frantic and complex drum machine programming commonly associated with the drum 'n' bass genre, which opens up into simpler patterns for the pre-choruses. The chorus features heavy guitars backed by more frantic drums, while the bridge is composed mainly of percussion patterns and percussive synthesizers and guitar riffs, which build in intensity to give way to a slower, simpler, quieter coda.

The Perfect Drug
From the We're In This Together and Into The Void singles, this version is same as the original, but does not cut off at the end, rather repeating further and fading out.

The Perfect Drug (Instrumental)
Released by Reznor via his account at remix.nin.com, this version features a differently-structured ending, but is otherwise the same as the original version minus the vocal tracks.

The Perfect Drug (Meat Beat Manifesto)
This remix is almost a dub mix: it is very light on lyrics and emphasizes the percussion beat of the song. The word "annihilate" is added at some points and leads this remix out of the breakdown and into the ending portion. "The only lyrics in this version are "And I want you" and "You are the perfect drug."

The Perfect Drug (Plug)
Incorporating dream-like synths and a danceable rhythm, this remix is notable for its synth rendition of the opening strains of the song. The last few lyrics of the first verse are used, "You are the perfect drug" is heard at the breakdown, and vocal instrumentation has been added. "Take me with you" is repeated at the end of this remix.

The Perfect Drug (Nine Inch Nails)
This remix begins with Reznor whispering "You are the perfect drug," distorted and slowed down. A dance beat and wind are added over the vocals to form the first section. The lyrics are then sung about a third of the way through, as the beat becomes heavier and the synths build in volume. By the middle of the song, the music becomes much louder as the lyric "Take me with you" is whispered over it. Vocal instrumentation, albeit distorted, is also incorporated into this remix. Perhaps the most notable aspect of this remix is the use of the "Closer" synth voice to replicate the melody at the end of the song.

The Perfect Drug (Spacetime Continuum)
Windchime-like instrumentation over a percussive beat and the whispered lyric "You are the perfect drug" open this remix. It then goes into a percolating beat, with a simple melody over a pulsing bass. This could be considered one of the "quieter" mixes of the song, as it is not as aggressive as the other remixes.

The Perfect Drug (The Orb)
This remix begins with the lyric "You are the perfect drug" heavily distorted as a swirling beat comes in over it. The word "drug" is also repeated at various points in this version. At about three minutes in, the lyric "Take me with you" is repeated as the mix goes into a pseudo-breakdown. At the breakdown, a bass line over percussion, leads into the song's finale.

The Perfect Drug (Aphrodite)
This remix is exclusive to the vinyl edition of The Perfect Drug Versions. It's set in a different key than the other remixes and has a fast, electronic beat. As with most of the other remixes, it is light on lyrics, consisting only of "can't keep control/can't keep track," "taking me," and "you are perfect." A CD-quality MP3 file of the track was uploaded by Reznor on remix.nin.com.

Live
"The Perfect Drug" has never been played live despite its popularity with many NIN fans. It was widely speculated that the complex drum solo in the song is responsible for this, although it was probably not out of the range of drummers Josh Freese or Ilan Rubin. It is also likely that Reznor does not personally like the song very much, as he concedes it was produced quickly for the Lost Highway soundtrack.

Then-current drummer Jerome Dillon said the band has "never rule[d] out the possibility" of playing the song, in response to a fan's question posted on nin.com/access on 2005-07-19:

NIN fan Trollmanen was able to ask ex-drummer Josh Freese about the rehearsal process for the song:

"The one question I asked him was about playing The Perfect Drug live, and how the rehearsal process went for that song and why it never worked out. The first thing he said, without hesitation was that the song itself isn't that difficult to play live on the drums. He said something about the programmed beats part was the only thing that was sort of complicated (it was a little hard to hear him at times, crappy connection), but that it worked live with him playing it. The drumming sounded good and everyone was happy with that. He said the problem with the song was the ending. The whole song was really rocking and pushing through, then you get to the ending and it just never seemed to work. He said they tried four or so different endings to the song. They tried it kinda mellow sounding, and that didn't work. They tried a really aggressive ending, and that didn't work either. They did a simple ending, same result. They just couldn't find an ending to the sound that seemed to do it justice. The thing was that the song sounded really good, but to get to the ending and just not sound good, it was kind of a let down. He said [Trent Reznor] just seemed uninterested with it after a while and they just gave up on it."

Fellow NIN fan Whiskers had previously asked the same when he had lunch with the drummer. link

Music Video
Mark Romanek, who also directed "Closer," directed "The Perfect Drug" in 1997. It was one of the most expensive videos at the time as the costs of building a refrigerated set, renting period costumes, and securing use of Gustav Klimt's The Kiss painting were all factors in the almost $1 million cost.

The concept of the video is widely interpreted as Trent Reznor portraying a man mourning the death of a child and detaching himself from reality through absinthe. Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner, and Chris Vrenna appear in the video, most notably playing string instruments at the beginning of the video. The aesthetics were heavily influenced by the illustrations of 20th-century artist Edward Gorey (1925–2000), the most obvious reference coming from the boy sitting on the cushion in front of the painting.

The entire video was filmed with a blue tint with the exception of the drum breakdown, which uses flashing green light instead, representing Reznor losing himself in the absinthe.

Lyrics
I got my head, but my head is unraveling
Can't keep control, can't keep track of where it's traveling
I got my heart but my heart's no good
And you're the only one that's understood
I come along but I don't know where you're taking me
I shouldn't go but you're wrenching, dragging, shaking me
Turn off the sun, pull the stars from the sky
The more I give to you, the more I die

And I want you
You are the perfect drug
The perfect drug
The perfect drug

You make me hard when I'm all soft inside
I see the truth when I'm all stupid-eyed
The arrow goes straight through my heart
Without you everything just falls apart
My blood wants to say hello to you
My fears want to get inside of you
My soul is so afraid to realize
How very little there is left of me

And I want you
You are the perfect drug
The perfect drug
The perfect drug

Take me, with you
Without you
Without you everything falls apart
Without you it's not as much fun to pick up the pieces
}}"Starfuckers, Inc." is the sixth track on the right disc of The Fragile. It has been speculated that this is a parody of Marilyn Manson and his lifestyle.

The beginning vocals are spliced together, as a jab at Manson's inability to sing songs in a single take.

Etymology
The word "Starfucker" was apparently the original title of the Rolling Stones song "Star Star," released on the 1973 album, Goats Head Soup. The term "starfucker" was later used by the artist Tori Amos in her song "Professional Widow," released on her 1996 album, Boys For Pele. In this song, the eponymous "professional widow" and "starfucker" is widely considered to be Courtney Love. "Starfucker" is also the tenth track on Hanzel Und Gretyl's 1997 industrial metal album Transmissions From Uranus. All three of these songs preceded "Starfuckers, Inc."
Starfuckers, Inc.
This is the version found on The Fragile. Slowly fading in with a quiet beat and moving synthesizers, the first verse then erupts, with locked drum loops and synthesized bass. Reznor's verse vocals were recorded and cut in such a way that each word sounds like it is from a different vocal take, possibly as a stab at the pop music celebrities the lyrics seem to satirize. In contrast, the chorus is loud and guitar-heavy, with several repeated group shouts. A wah guitar solo similar in sound to the one from "The Wretched" connects to the second verse. After the second chorus, the song quickly quiets for the lonely guitar-and-vocal bridge before erupting back into the loud chorus.

Starfuckers, Inc. (Edit)
In this version, it fades in half as fast. The word 'bitch' is censored, as is the word 'fuck' - during the chorus, it is silenced. The guitar solo that comes next is cut in half. In the second verse the word 'fucking' is censored, as is 'asskisser'. Also censored is the word 'suck', but, interestingly enough, the word 'whore' is not. During the loud chorus at the end of the lonely bridge, an added guitar that plays nine times in the studio plays only four in this edit. Also, at the very end, a part that plays thrice plays only twice. However, at the end of this edit, there is the KISS extended ending, but it fades out sooner.

Starfuckers, Inc. (The Day The World Went Away)
This version has an extended ending, incorporating fireworks and applause from KISS' "Shout It Out Loud," found on KISS Alive!, and the beginning guitar riff of "Complication." The track then fades out.

Starsuckers, Inc.
This is a heavily censored version, released on the Starsuckers, Inc. promo disc and is the version generally played with the song's music video. The bridge verse is changed from the Carly Simon-quoting lyrics, and the "f" in the word "Starfuckers" is changed to an "s" to make "Starsuckers" throughout.

Starfuckers, Inc. (Version)—Adrian Sherwood
This remix integrates siren noises and various noises reminiscent of old sci-fi movies, as well as samples from KISS Alive!. It has very little in the way of lyrics, consisting only of "Starfuckers," "Starfuckers, Inc." and "You're so fucking beautiful."

Starfuckers, Inc. (And All That Could Have Been)
This live version is similar to the album original, with the exception being an extended bridge, with Reznor declaring, "Well, fuck you!" after repeating "Don't you?" many times.
An Easter Egg on the DVD includes a performance of this song at Madison Square Garden in New York City with Manson. It then goes into a performance of Manson's "The Beautiful People." They had re-established a friendship, which did not last long after that performance.

Music Video
The video for "Starfuckers, Inc." was released in 2000 under the name "Starsuckers, Inc." due to censorship issues. The interlude lyrics were also changed for the video, allegedly to avoid a copyright infringement lawsuit.
SPOILERS BEGIN

A glammed-out Reznor and a strung-out, leggy blonde are riding in the back of a limousine. They stop at a run-down carnival at a trailer park and participate in the games there. These games include throwing CDs in a toilet, smashing plates bearing head shots of popular musicians, breaking busts of various musicians (including Reznor himself), and a dunk tank the involves a large man dressed like Courtney Love falling into a tank filled with toxic waste.

At this point in the video, it becomes a commentary on the state of music at the time. Bands like Limp Bizkit were extremely popular while Smashing Pumpkins and REM seemed to be past their prime in the eyes of the record labels and many consumers.

After the dunk tank, Reznor and the blonde return to the car. It is then that the blonde is revealed to be Manson dressed in drag. Many people speculated that the feud between Reznor and Manson had ended.

SPOILERS END

The video contains several references to the films of David Lynch. The opening scene with the road and the red-tinted scenes refer to Lost Highway. The limousine and Reznor's clothes and oxygen mask refer to the character Frank Booth in Blue Velvet, who has an addiction to gases and is the perfect figure of depravity.

During the throwing of CD's into a toilet, one of the discs is Marilyn Manson's "Mechanical Animals".

Live
"Starfuckers, Inc." has been played live since the Fragility tour. During the Live: With Teeth tour, the song was played at a much more faster speed & Reznor has stopped the song and skipped the breakdown, bantering to the audience before going right into the song's finale.

Lyrics
My god sits in the back of the limousine
My god comes in a wrapper of cellophane
My god pouts on the cover of the magazine
My god's a shallow little bitch trying to make the scene

I have arrived and you should believe the hype
I listened to everyone now I know that everyone was right
I'll be there for you as long as it works for me
I play a game
It's called insincerity

Starfuckers
Starfuckers
Starfuckers, Inc.
Starfuckers

I am every fucking thing and just a little more
I sold my soul but don't you dare call me a whore
And when I suck you off not a drop will go to waste
It's really not so bad you know once you get past the taste
(Asskisser)

Starfuckers
Starfuckers
Starfuckers, Inc.
Starfuckers

All our pain
How did we ever get by without you?
You're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?

Now I belong I'm one of the chosen ones
Now I belong I'm one of the beautiful ones

The first lyric to the second part of the first verse was changed on the actual recording:
I have arrived and this time you should believe the hype

In "Starsuckers, Inc.," the lyrics in the breakdown are changed to:
All our pain
How did we ever get by without you?
Overplayed
And soon you'll make us forget about you
Won't you?
"Wish" is the second track on 1992's Broken EP, and displays that era's characteristic aggression and abrasive guitar attack. The song won a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance." It keeps with the general mood of the Broken EP and includes numerous angry and self-deprecating lyrical passages, but unlike other songs, also shows a desire for something more.

"Echoplex" features similar wind synthesizer sounds, but they do not appear to be direct samples from "Wish". As well, the bridge of "Wish" shares its chord progression with the chorus of "March Of The Pigs".
Wish
This is the original album version. Opening with percussion and noise loops, Reznor's quick verses work in call-and-response with an equally quick distorted guitar attack. Each verse eventually opens up into a sustained chorus based around guitar power chords. The synthesizer-driven bridge introduces a new chord progression before returning to the verse guitar parts, a final chorus, and a coda made of the verse guitar parts again, which suddenly cut off to a quiet, ascending white noise manipulation that segues into "Last."

Wish ("No Bad Words" version)
This a censored version of the original, distributed on a promo to radio stations.

Wish (Fixed)
Elongated to nine minutes, this remix elaborates on the drum and synthesizer loop of the original. The cymbals are run through a wah effect, making them sound as if underwater. Its structure essentially follows the original, but with production changes and lengthening of the introduction and ending.
Song Credits
*Remixed by J.G. Thirlwell

Fist Fuck
This remix mostly consists of manipulations of the drum loop, though it also loops several of the guitar parts toward the end, which ascend in tempo until crashing thunderously. It also contains samples from the musical Showboat and some psychedelic narration by Timothy Leary. Interestingly, Skinny Puppy had used the same Leary samples on their song "Left Handshake," but were forced to remove the song from their Last Rights album due to clearance issues. "Fist Fuck" was heard in the film Resident Evil, in the scene where Alice (Milla Jovovitch) fights the zombie dogs.
Wish (Closure)
This is the first of two live performance videos of the song on Closure, recorded in bootleg-like quality.

Wish (Live)
The second performance video of this song on Closure, it is featured on the second disc and is professionally recorded. It follows the live music videos for "Eraser" and "Hurt."

Wish (And All That Could Have Been)
This version uses the same arrangement as the live version on Closure. Here, the song is used to return from the slow section of the concert setlist.

Wish (Beside You In Time)
This live version's ending incorporates double bass drumming by Josh Freese and a guitar solo by Aaron North but is otherwise identical in arrangement to the other versions.

Music Video
In 1992 the video for "Wish" premiered. It was directed by Peter Christopherson, who also directed "March Of The Pigs" and the infamous Broken Movie.

The video features the band performing in a rather ornate cage. Outside of the cage is a mob that seems determined to get into the cage and attack the band. The finale of the video shows the mob accosting the band through the bars, grabbing at them and attempting to bind them. Ultimately, they break through the chain keeping the band locked inside and storm in, wielding baseball bats and other crude weapons. MTV felt that the ending scene was too violent and alternate footage was used for network airplay.

The video can also be found on the Broken Movie. The only major difference is that footage from the movie can be seen during the video's interlude.

A second video is a live video filmed by Simon Maxwell for Closure in 1995. The footage used is different from that used in the Closure performance.

Live
"Wish" has become a staple of the Nine Inch Nails live shows, performed at nearly every show, due to its high energy and guitar-oriented structure. The instrumental bridge is played by guitars rather than synthesizers in nearly every instance. When this song debuted on the Lollapalooza Tour in 1991, it was musically very similar to the final version, but with different lyrics.
Lyrics
This is the first day of my last days
I built it up now I take it apart climbed up real high now fall down real far
No need for me to stay the last thing left I just threw it away
I put my faith in God and my trust in you
Now there's nothing more fucked up I could do

Wish there was something real wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you

I'm the one without a soul I'm the one with this big fucking hole
No new tale to tell twenty-six years on my way to Hell
Gotta listen to your big time hard line bad luck fist fuck
Don't think you're having all the fun
You know me I hate everyone

Wish there was something real wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you

I want to but I can't turn back
But I want to

Prior to the release of Broken, the following extra lyrics were sung over what became the instrumental ending:

I think I'm losing it
I think I'm losing it
I think I'm going down, down, down, down
Burn
The original album version is on both the Natural Born Killers soundtrack and the Deluxe Edition of The Downward Spiral. Similar in tone and structure to "Closer to God," the verse and chorus sections of the song are then mediated by a fast, guitar-driven bridge that occurs both in the middle and at the end of the song. Both the verses and choruses are sung through a vocal distortion effect. The drum loops at the end fade out, allowing the layers of noisy distorted guitar to repeat until suddenly cutting off.

Burn (Beside You In Time)
The live version found on Beside You In Time and played throughout the With Teeth Arena Tour uses a new set of percussion loops, manipulated live by Alessandro Cortini before the verse drum rhythm joins in. Its guitar-only ending segues directly into "Gave Up."

Music Video
The video for "Burn" is similar to the various screen projections used throughout Nine Inch Nails tours. Directied by Hank Corwin and Reznor, it features images of people, nature, and general destruction and decay interspersed with images from the film and Reznor singing. The video incorporates clips from Natural Born Killers and is filmed in such a way that the video mimics the film. According to IMDB.com, the Natural Born Killers clips are actually footage that was cut from the film.

Live
The song has become a staple of the live performances. It has been played differently through out the various line ups. During self destruct it was played closer to the album version included distorted vocals. During the With Teeth era it featured more radical changes. The percussive loops were heavily manipulated by Cortini on a custom Kaoss pad & the synth was played by Jeordie on bass. Finally during the Wave Goodbye Tour, the loops, back to normal, were manipulated by Trent before the rest of the band kicked in. Also the synth was played by Justin Meldal-Johnsen on keyboards once again.
}}"The Great Destroyer" is the thirteenth track on the 2007 release Year Zero.

Theories
This could be a song from the perspective of the character known as the Angry Sniper, or also a song about the Red Horse virus referred to in the "hidden" lyrics. It could also state the thought process of somebody who is secretly rebelling against the government in Year Zero.
There is also speculation that this is about the Manga "Death Note", as the lyrics are very similar to the core concept.
The Great Destroyer
This is the original album version. Consisting of two distinct but interrelated sections, the song begins with a drum loop similar in structure to that of "Every Day Is Exactly The Same." A simple guitar riff, panned right, and Reznor's vocals enter after four measures, playing the first verse. A loud synthesizer rings in the chorus, played with the same instrumentation but with different chords. The second verse features an additional e-bow guitar line in the left channel which drops out for the second chorus, after which the climax is reached when the title is sung in a multi-layered vocal harmony. It quickly builds in intensity and leads into the second section, which features much louder beat loops that were heard earlier underneath the verses and choruses as they are manipulated, crunched, and destroyed. By the end of this coda, its beats have been so mashed that the decaying delay effect sounds nothing like anything else in the song. The opening noise layers of "Another Version Of The Truth" quietly fade in underneath.

The Great Destroyer: modwheelmood
This remix by modwheelmood appears on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. It begins with the vocals sung over an acoustic guitar before bass and drums join in as the first verse is repeated. As the chorus comes in, a synth beat and melody play under echoing vocals, singing a melody different than what's in the original version. Layers of sound are gradually added in the second verse, creating an ominous sound and tone to the song.

modwheelmood was interviewed by The NIN Hotline on March 1, 2008. Band member Alessandro Cortini said the following about the remix of "The Great Destroyer":

"Trent {Reznor} asked me to pick a song off Year Zero and to give it a try while we were on tour in Europe. 'The Great Destroyer' is probably my favorite song off YZ, so I borrowed a bass and an acoustic guitar from Aaron and reconstructed the song in my hotel room in Amsterdam. I also used my Buchla 200e music box, which I love to death. I think I added a couple of tracks when I got back home, then mixed it and sent it in. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that TR liked it. I thought he would hate it since I changed the melody and chords around…" interview link
Live
"The Great Destroyer" made its live debut on August 1, 2007 in Moscow, Russia during the Performance 2007 tour. Later dates of the tour have included samples from "Happiness In Slavery" in the breakdown. During the Lights In The Sky Tour Happiness In Slavery was no longer in the breakdown.
Lyrics
Say your name
Try to speak as clearly as you can
You know everything gets written down
Nod your head
Just in case they could be watching
With their shiny satellites

I hope they cannot see
The limitless potential
Living inside of me
To murder everything
I hope they cannot see
I am the Great Destroyer

Turn it up
Listen to the shit they pump into
Your head
Filling you with apathy
Hold your breath
Wait until you know the time is right
On time
The end is near

I hope they cannot see
The limitless potential
Living inside of me
To murder everything
I hope they cannot see
I am the Great Destroyer
In 2007 it was nominated for the Grammy for "Best Hard Rock Performance" but lost it to "Woman" by Wolfmother.
Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Edit)
An uncredited remix of the song from a very limited European promo. It is actually an altered version of the original song, with some lyrics omitted, differences in the overall mix, and a shorter ending. A CD-quality MP3 version was uploaded by Reznor on remix.nin.com.

Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Live At Rehearsals)
This version of the song is exclusive to the Beside You In Time DVD. It was filmed and recorded in the band's rehearsal space in early 2005.

Music Video
There were plans for a music video to be directed by Francis Lawrence, edited by Mario Mares, with Max Goldman as director of photography, but it was scrapped during post-production, not long after details about the video leaked to the web. Reznor commented on the scrapped video on Echoing the Sound:

Regarding EDIETS, there will be no video released. I made a mistake.
The good news is that mistake has acted as a catalyst for me to
rethink a number of decisions regarding the direction and position of
the band I've made and will be making in the future.
The enemies from outside and within have been identified and I am back on track.
"Every Day Is Exactly The Same" was been played live during the Live: With Teeth tour in 2005. It has not been played since then.

Lyrics
I believe I can see the future
Because I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
And then again that might have been a dream
I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound
I just do what I've been told
I really don't want them to come around
Oh no

Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I can feel their eyes are watching
In case I lose myself again
Sometimes I think I'm happy here
Sometimes I still pretend
I can't remember how this all got started
But I can tell you —exactly— How it will end

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I'm writing on a little piece of paper
I'm hoping someday you might find
I'll hide it behind something
They don't look behind
I am still inside here
A little bit comes bleeding through
I wish this could have been any other way
I just don't know what else I can do

Every day is exactly the same

Additional lyrics printed in the With Teeth PDF booklet, but not appearing in the song itself

And I've rehearsed my lines
And I know what's coming next
}}

"Hurt" is the final track on The Downward Spiral.

The idea of the narrator being or feeling "a million miles away," as sung at the end of this song, would be mentioned again in both "All The Love In The World" and "1,000,000." Whether the three songs are all specifically related beyond repetition of the phrase is publicly unverified.

Meaning
The meaning of this song is entirely debatable. Some may interpret this as a depressing suicide note, while others may find it to describe someone finding a new lease on life.

It should be noted that the lyric "A million miles away" is referenced in both the songs 1,000,000 and All The Love in the World, and the suicidal themes surrounding the songs, especially "1,000,000," may indicate a connection.

Covers
Hurt has been covered by a variety of artists, such as Tori Amos, Matthew Good, Peter Murphy, and Sevendust. The song gained a new wave of popularity in 2002 when it was famously covered by Johnny Cash, at the recommendation of producer Rick Rubin. This caused a lot of confusion for the audiences of Cash, who generally weren't familiar with the work of Nine Inch Nails, often resulting in miscrediting the song to Cash. In Cash's version, the line "crown of shit" is changed to "crown of thorns," but is otherwise unchanged.
Hurt
This original album version uses slightly distorted guitars and disrupted noise loops, adding a ragged aesthetic. The song suddenly climaxes towards the end, while the final lyrics are whispered over the noise. A drone follows, and ends the song and the record. This version was also featured as the final track on its promo, which also includes a clean version of the same mix.

Hurt (Instrumental)
Released by Reznor via his remix.nin.com account, this unmastered instrumental version is identical to the album version, save the lack of vocals.

Hurt (Quiet)
The only real difference between this remix and the original is that the guitar sound is much cleaner and the climax towards the end is less drastic. There is also much less static filling the song's atmosphere. This version appears only on the US version of Further Down the Spiral and was later included on The Downward Spiral 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. Two additional versions of it were included on the "Hurt" promo: "(Quiet Version) Clean" is censored and fades out the noise loop ending, while "(Quiet Version) Soiled" is uncensored and uses a shorter rearrangement of the noise loops, which end suddenly.
Song Credits
Hurt (Live)
This live version is found on the UK edition of Further Down The Spiral and in video form on Closure and The Downward Spiral 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. In this version, the guitar is replaced with a piano. Reznor moans melodically and quietly after the noisy ending fades away, and the faint sounds of "The Downward Spiral's" introduction can be heard fading out. On the "Hurt" promo, two versions of this recording are included, one censored and one uncensored, both of which fade in the beginning and out the ending.

Hurt (with David Bowie)
Ending the cooperative transition set on the 1995 Dissonance tour, this remix of "Hurt" was played live by David Bowie and his band, featuring Reznor singing the duet with Bowie as they trade verse sections and choruses. More spacey and featuring new drum loops and guitar, the first half of the song gave way to a return to the album guitar parts after the initial chorus. Its noisy ending eventually segued into the opening song of the Bowie set, "Look Back in Anger." A performance of this version is included on Closure.

Hurt (And All That Could Have Been)
The guitar is again replaced by piano in this performance, and a vocal harmony is added to the chorus.

Hurt (Beside You In Time)
This live version starts with Reznor singing the vocal part and playing the piano melody solo on a keyboard. Jeordie White joins in on bass for the first chorus, and the rest of the band joins during the second chorus.

Music Video
The video is simply tour footage of Reznor singing behind a scrim. This video was released after a fully produced music video was scrapped. Both the scrapped studio video and the final live video were directed by Simon Maxwell. The live video can be found in the Dualdisc edition of The Downward Spiral and also on Closure. Behind-the-scenes footage of the fully produced music video can be seen in the "Appendage" footage on the Closure DVD leak.

Live
"Hurt" is one of the most commonly played live songs throughout all eras. It is normally played towards the end of the main set, though it was featured during the mid-set slow section of the Further Down The Spiral Tour.

Lyrics
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

In the final recording, the line in the second verse is changed to:
The feelings disappear
}}"Head Like A Hole" is the first track on the 1989 release Pretty Hate Machine. It was the first commercial success Trent Reznor had and received wide radio rotation at the time. Though Reznor doesn't dislike the song, he was quite surpised it became as big as it did, especially due to its relatively easy writing process compared to some of the lesser recognized tracks on Pretty Hate Machine ("That's What I Get" and "Kinda I Want To" most notably).
Head Like A Hole
The version that appears as the first track on Pretty Hate Machine, it's perhaps one of the most well known Nine Inch Nails songs. Its pounding synth bassline, tribal rhythms and chants, layered guitar and catchy double chorus are all signature aspects of the song. The stereo wipe at the end fades into the beginning of "Terrible Lie."

Head Like A Hole (Slate)
The first track on the Head Like A Hole single, this version contains more treble than its cousins and a somewhat dancier beat than most, along with higher pitched synths playing the bassline as a lead instead. Its intro is similar to the "(Clay)" remix. The instrumental melody of the original has been replaced and there is no guitar part in the chorus. It also lacks the stereo wipe outro and instead simply loops as it fades out.

Song Credits
*Production and mix: Flood, Trent Reznor

Head Like A Hole (Clay)
The second track on the Head Like A Hole single, this is the version that was used in the video for "Head Like A Hole." The only major differences are a different intro (one that features the second half of the chorus and some rhythmic chanting), a shorter pre-chorus in the second verse, and an unadulterated and extended version of the outro stereo wipe.

Head Like A Hole (Copper)
Present on the Head Like A Hole single, the "(Copper)" remix seems to be a cut and paste of the various remixes above, containing bits and pieces, loops and interruptions of the other songs. It contains the dance beat of "(Slate)" but has the layered guitar of the original version as well as a slightly modified instrumental intro. Its outro, unique to this mix, is the "Bow down before the one you serve/you're going to get what you deserve" lyric over a swinging drum-machine loop sampled from "Body Language" by Queen; the drum loop includes part of a scream by Freddie Mercury. The section sampled (from the cymbal crash to when Freddie shouts "Yeah!") is heard from 3:04 to 3:08 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqLyjg-klhE

Song Credits
You Know Who You Are
The fifth track on the Head Like A Hole single, this song is an instrumental composed of the background synths and various tribal rhythms and chants that compose the song. It's more or less a wordless "dub" version of the song and is notable for being the very first true Nine Inch Nails instrumental. The outro of the song is the actual intro to the original version of "Head Like A Hole." (This song is not to be confused with "You Know What You Are?," the second track off of the album With Teeth.)

Song Credits
*Production and mix: Flood, Trent Reznor

Head Like A Hole (Opal)
Exclusive to the UK version of the Head Like A Hole single, the mix is notable for it's "realistic" drums and strange instrumentation, much of which isn't present on any of the other remixes. It is perhaps the most unique remix, having a few lyrical differences from the original version of the song (in particular, the verses clearly say "God of money" rather than "God Money"), as well as using an inverted version of the bassline rather than the bassline itself and a totally different drumbeat. The only element that found its way over from the other mixes is the wood percussion intro from the original version of the song, which the drum beat follows exactly. The song ends by fading away while Reznor whispers "You know... you know who you are" repeatedly. This line is found only on this version, though it does appear in the printed lyrics on the Pretty Hate Machine album.

Head Like A Hole (Soil)
The longest remix of the group, it starts off with a distorted version of the "(Clay/Slate)" remix intro. It has the original drumbeat, but lacks the synth bassline which actually comes in during the middle of the song to lead as a bridge with some odd sounding synths. There are also some odd steel drum sounding synths which stereo wipe back and forth at various points in the song.

Song Credits
Head Like A Hole (Demo)
Present on the Demos and Remixes bootleg, this demo is a fake. It's actually the "(Opal)" remix from the UK release of Head Like A Hole. It is also known as Head Like A Hole (Go-Go Mix).

Head Like A Hole (And All That Could Have Been)
The 13th song on the CD (16th on the DVD/VHS versions), it falls directly after "Closer" and is the end of the regular set. The lights are bright and the LCD displays behind them show mostly interference snow in time with the music. At the end of the song, the band completely destroys all the instruments and the music melts into dissonance, hanging for a bit while the strobes increase in intensity (almost to the point where it's impossible to see) before the lights shut off completely. This minute delay or so gives the band time to prepare for the encore.

Head Like A Hole (Beside You In Time)
Like the And All That Could Have Been version, this version is performed very closely to the album version, though it is much more aggressive (especially Reznor's vocals), and features a hard drumming solo by Josh Freese. At one point, Alessandro Cortini and Aaron North jump on Cortini's keyboard. At the end, North jams his guitar in an amplifier, and then throws it at the crowd. The song concludes the concert.

Live
"Head Like A Hole" has been played at nearly every Nine Inch Nails concert and is a staple of the live set. Often it closes out the concert.

During the Lollapalooza Tour, various guitarists from other bands (such as Ice-T of Body Count) would come out onstage to perform with the band. YouTube video

"Head Like A Hole" is usually the last song of the show (With Teeth era) or last song before the encore (Self Destruct, Fragility, and Lights in the Sky eras). At the end, the band usually destroy their instruments.

Since the With Teeth era, Trent has left singing of the chorus to the other members of the band. This is possibly due to vocal strain.

Music video
The video for "Head Like A Hole" was directed by Eric Zimmerman, who also co-directed "Down In It." The Clay remix is used in place of the album version.

The video contains three different sequences, used at different intervals of the song. During the verses, footage of tribal dancers is undercut with rotating cybernetic heads, creating a strobe effect. For the main chorus and instrumental interludes, the band is seen playing in a large cage with wires and magnetic tape at their feet. The sub-chorus features black-and-white footage of Reznor lowering his head into a tub filled with water and bringing it back up. At the end of the video, Reznor's feet have become entangled in the tape and wires as he is lifted off the ground, hung upside-down and writhes in mid-air.

When the video was shown on Beavis and Butt-Head in 1993, the "Copper" mix was used in place of the "Clay" mix.
Live
"God Given" has been played at various concerts on 2008's Lights In The Sky Tour. The quickly spoken/whispered lines after the chorus are spoken by Robin instead of Trent. The live version also features added guitar by Trent & a guitar solo by Robin.

Lyrics
Hey man
Please don't make a sound
Take a look around
Can't you see what's right in front of you?
Aah
Have a little taste
No more time to waste
You don't wanna get left behind, because it's all coming down right now
Now—how
Hard is it to see?
Put your faith in me
I sure wouldn't want to be
Praying to the wrong piece of wood
You should
Get where you belong
Everything you know is wrong
Come on, sing along everybody now

(God Given)
And He gives us sight
And we see the light
And it burns so bright
Now we know we're right
When His kingdom come
And Thy will be done
We have just begun
We're the chosen ones

I would never tell you anything that wasn't absolutely true that hadn't come right from
His mouth and He wants me to tell you

Wait
Step into the light
How can this be right?
I'm afraid we're going to ask you to leave
Guess you can not win
With the color of your skin
You won't be getting in to the Promised Land
Besides
This is just another case
You people still don't know your place
Step aside, out the way, wipe that look off your face
We are the divine
Separated from the swine
Come on, sing along everybody now

(God Given)
And He gives us sight
And we see the light
And it burns so bright
Now we know we're right
When His kingdom come
And Thy will be done
We have just begun
We're the chosen ones
And He gives us sight
And we see the light
And it burns so bright
Now we know we're right
When His kingdom come
And Thy will be done
And the Father and the Holy Son
We're the chosen ones

I would never tell you anything that wasn't absolutely true that hadn't come right from
His mouth and He wants me to tell you
}}The Downward Spiral" is often referred to as the final part of The Downward Spiral's story in which the main character kills himself with a gun. The intro to the song contains a chromatic melody very reminiscent of the ending of "Closer" but it is in E Major rather than C Major.
The Downward Spiral
The final chapter in the album, The Downward Spiral incorporates white noise and the sound of flies, symbolizing the main character's arrival to "the bottom" of madness and self destruction. A single acoustic guitar is layered on top, playing the famous "Downward Spiral Motif." The music then begins to build up, culminating with sounds of Trent screaming in desperation. A heavy drum line is added onto the screaming and the lyrics are whispered on top. Finally, the song abruptly ends, with only the sound of white noise providing a segue into Hurt. This song marks the final appearance of the motif, played as follows:

The Downward Spiral (The Bottom)
This remix contains a percolating minor-key melody that incorporates the guitar part of the original album version. It can be found on Further Down The Spiral and the 2-disc Deluxe Edition of The Downward Spiral.

Live
When performed on the Self Destruct tour, the projection screen would show streams of blood slowly descending from the top. Once the screen was completely red, the curtain would rise, revealing the band performing the song. The vocals are absent from live performances, making it an instrumental lead-in, usually to "Wish."

Recently the song returned to the live set list with Trent performing the acoustic riff on keyboards.

Lyrics
He couldn't believe how easy it was
He put the gun into his face
Bang!
(So much blood for such a tiny little hole)

Problems have solutions
A lifetime of fucking things up fixed in one determined flash
Everything's blue
In this world
The deepest shade of mushroom blue
All fuzzy
Spilling out of my head

The fifth line was changed on the final album cut:
Problems do have solutions, you know

The seventh line is repeated twice:
Everything's blue...
Everything's blue in this world
Remixes were featured on the Sin single along with a B-side (a cover of Queen's "Get Down, Make Love"). ===Sin===
This is the original album version from Pretty Hate Machine. The loud cry from the end of "Kinda I Want To" segues into the track as the hisses jump back and forth between the left and right audio channels (the song itself utilizes extensive panning throughout). The song itself is very beat driven with heavy synthetic base (and bass) and uses the lyrics as the melody for most of the song, lacking any real "lead" parts. It's also notable for its unique sample of a loud whistle (the origin of which is unknown).

Sin (Dub)
This remix is almost completely stripped of lyrics, save for the words "sin," "control," and "lies" scattered throughout the track.

Song Credits
*Remix: Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc

Sin (Long)
At nearly six minutes long, this remix has extended instrumentals including a massively extended outro composed of what sounds like wind or running water and muted synthetic chimes.

Song Credits
*Remix: Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc

Sin (Short)
This remix incorporates some of the elements of the "Long" and "Dub" remixes, but it has a more drawn-out outro. This version is used in the music video.

Song Credits
Sin (And All That Could Have Been)
This live version is known for its theremin intro.

Live
The song's intro seems to be performed differently by every NIN keyboardist. For example, Danny Lohner in the Woodstock '94 performance is seen playing an additional melody to the intro. Charlie Clouser in And All That Could Have Been uses a theremin before the guitar intro is played, while Alessandro Cortini's performance of the intro is a tad closer to the original. Other than that, the rest of the song is performed closely to the album version in most live performances, though when Jeordie played the song,he played the main beat on bass rather than the keyboards.

Music Video
A video was released in 1990, using the "(Short)" remix of the song. It was directed by Brett Turnbull. The video contains two women dancing with each other at the beginning before cutting to the main focus of the video. A woman, nude except for what looks like straps to spelunking gear and a halogen lamp, walking a shirtless, wrist-bound Reznor with a bag over his head through what looks like an industrial warehouse complex. He is then strapped into a large rotary harness where she spins him throughout the remainder of the video. These scenes are intercut with two young gay lovers, a man and woman wearing ritualistic dressings and dancing, as well as visuals of pierced genitalia (both male and female), all reflecting the song's dark, sexual aspects.

The video was banned from MTV and most major outlets. A partial version of the video can be found on Closure. There were reports that the complete video was shown at dance clubs in the early 1990s and can now be found on the Internet.

Lyrics
You give me the reason
You give me control
I gave you my Purity
My Purity you stole
Did you think I wouldn't recognize this compromise?
Am I just too stupid to realize?
Stale incense, old sweat and lies, lies, lies

It comes down to this
Your kiss
Your fist
And your strain
It gets under my skin
Within
Take in
The extent of my sin

You give me the anger
You give me the nerve
Carry out my sentence
I get what I deserve
I'm just an effigy to be defaced
To be disgraced
Your need for me has been replaced
And if I can't have everything well then just give me a taste

It comes down to this
Your kiss
Your fist
And your strain
It gets under my skin
Within
Take in
The extent of my sin

Head Like A Hole (Clay)
The second track on the Head Like A Hole single, this is the version that was used in the video for "Head Like A Hole." The only major differences are a different intro (one that features the second half of the chorus and some rhythmic chanting), a shorter pre-chorus in the second verse, and an unadulterated and extended version of the outro stereo wipe.
Head Like A Hole (Opal)
Exclusive to the UK version of the Head Like A Hole single, the mix is notable for it's "realistic" drums and strange instrumentation, much of which isn't present on any of the other remixes. It is perhaps the most unique remix, having a few lyrical differences from the original version of the song, as well as using an inverted version of the bassline rather than the bassline itself and a totally different drumbeat. The only element that found its way over from the other mixes is the wood percussion intro from the original version of the song, which the drum beat follows exactly. The song ends by fading away while Reznor whispers "You know... you know who you are." repeatedly, a line of this song only found on this version.

Head Like A Hole (Demo)
Present on the Purest Feeling II bootleg, this demo is a fake. It's actually the "(Opal)" remix from the UK release of Head Like A Hole.

"Head Like A Hole" is usually the last song of the show (With Teeth era) or last song before the encore (Self Destruct and Fragility era). At the end, the band usually destroy their instruments.

God Money I'll do anything for you
God Money just tell me what you want me to
God Money nail me up against the wall
God Money don't want everything he wants it all
No you can't take it
No no you can't take it
(You can't take that away from me)

Head like a hole
Black as your soul
I'd rather die than give you control
Head like a hole
Black as your soul
I'd rather die than give you control

Bow down before the one you serve
You're going to get what you deserve

God Money's not looking for the cure
God Money's not concerned about the sick among the pure
God Money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised
God Money's not one to choose
No you can't take it
No no you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me

Head like a hole
Black as your soul
I'd rather die than give you control
Head like a hole
Black as your soul
I'd rather die than give you control

Bow down before the one you serve
You're going to get what you deserve
You know who you are
