}}"Head Like A Hole" is the first track on the 1989 release Pretty Hate Machine. It was the first commercial success Trent Reznor had and received wide radio rotation at the time. Though Reznor doesn't dislike the song, he was quite surpised it became as big as it did, especially due to its relatively easy writing process compared to some of the lesser recognized tracks on Pretty Hate Machine ("That's What I Get" and "Kinda I Want To" most notably).
Versions
Head Like A Hole
The version that appears as the first track on Pretty Hate Machine, it's perhaps one of the most well known Nine Inch Nails songs. Its pounding synth bassline, tribal rhythms and chants, layered guitar and catchy double chorus are all signature aspects of the song. The stereo wipe at the end fades into the beginning of "Terrible Lie."

Head Like A Hole (Slate)
The first track on the Head Like A Hole single, this version contains more treble than its cousins and a somewhat dancier beat than most, along with higher pitched synths playing the bassline as a lead instead. Its intro is similar to the "(Clay)" remix. The instrumental melody of the original has been replaced and there is no guitar part in the chorus. It also lacks the stereo wipe outro and instead simply loops as it fades out.

Head Like A Hole (Clay)
The second track on the Head Like A Hole single, this is the version that was used in the video for "Head Like A Hole." The only major differences are a different intro (one that features the second half of the chorus and some rhythmic chanting), a shorter pre-chorus in the second verse, and an unadulterated and extended version of the outro stereo wipe.

Head Like A Hole (Copper)
Present on the Head Like A Hole single, the "(Copper)" remix seems to be a cut and paste of the various remixes above, containing bits and pieces, loops and interruptions of the other songs. It contains the dance beat of "(Slate)" but has the layered guitar of the original version as well as a slightly modified instrumental intro. Its outro, unique to this mix, is the "Bow down before the one you serve/you're going to get what you deserve" lyric over a swinging drum-machine loop sampled from "Body Language" by Queen; the drum loop includes part of a scream by Freddie Mercury. The section sampled (from the cymbal crash to when Freddie shouts "Yeah!") is heard from 3:04 to 3:08 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqLyjg-klhE

You Know Who You Are
The fifth track on the Head Like A Hole single, this song is an instrumental composed of the background synths and various tribal rhythms and chants that compose the song. It's more or less a wordless "dub" version of the song and is notable for being the very first true Nine Inch Nails instrumental. The outro of the song is the actual intro to the original version of "Head Like A Hole." (This song is not to be confused with "You Know What You Are?," the second track off of the album With Teeth.)

Head Like A Hole (Opal)
Exclusive to the UK version of the Head Like A Hole single, the mix is notable for it's "realistic" drums and strange instrumentation, much of which isn't present on any of the other remixes. It is perhaps the most unique remix, having a few lyrical differences from the original version of the song (in particular, the verses clearly say "God of money" rather than "God Money"), as well as using an inverted version of the bassline rather than the bassline itself and a totally different drumbeat. The only element that found its way over from the other mixes is the wood percussion intro from the original version of the song, which the drum beat follows exactly. The song ends by fading away while Reznor whispers "You know... you know who you are" repeatedly. This line is found only on this version, though it does appear in the printed lyrics on the Pretty Hate Machine album.

Head Like A Hole (Soil)
The longest remix of the group, it starts off with a distorted version of the "(Clay/Slate)" remix intro. It has the original drumbeat, but lacks the synth bassline which actually comes in during the middle of the song to lead as a bridge with some odd sounding synths. There are also some odd steel drum sounding synths which stereo wipe back and forth at various points in the song.

Head Like A Hole (Demo)
Present on the Purest Feeling II bootleg, this demo is a fake. It's actually the "(Opal)" remix from the UK release of Head Like A Hole.

Head Like A Hole (And All That Could Have Been)
The 13th song on the CD (16th on the DVD/VHS versions), it falls directly after "Closer" and is the end of the regular set. The lights are bright and the LCD displays behind them show mostly interference snow in time with the music. At the end of the song, the band completely destroys all the instruments and the music melts into dissonance, hanging for a bit while the strobes increase in intensity (almost to the point where it's impossible to see) before the lights shut off completely. This minute delay or so gives the band time to prepare for the encore.

Head Like A Hole (Beside You In Time)
Like the And All That Could Have Been version, this version is performed very closely to the album version, though it is much more aggressive (especially Reznor's vocals), and features a hard drumming solo by Josh Freese. At one point, Alessandro Cortini and Aaron North jump on Cortini's keyboard. At the end, North jams his guitar in an amplifier, and then throws it at the crowd. The song concludes the concert.

Live
"Head Like A Hole" has been played at nearly every Nine Inch Nails concert and is a staple of the live set. Often it closes out the concert.

During the Lollapalooza Tour, various guitarists from other bands (such as Ice-T of Body Count) would come out onstage to perform with the band. YouTube video

"Head Like A Hole" is usually the last song of the show (With Teeth era) or last song before the encore (Self Destruct and Fragility era). At the end, the band usually destroy their instruments.

Music video
The video for "Head Like A Hole" was directed by Eric Zimmerman, who also co-directed "Down In It." The Clay remix is used in place of the album version.

The video contains three different sequences, used at different intervals of the song. During the verses, footage of tribal dancers is undercut with rotating cybernetic heads, creating a strobe effect. For the main chorus and instrumental interludes, the band is seen playing in a large cage with wires and magnetic tape at their feet. The sub-chorus features black-and-white footage of Reznor lowering his head into a tub filled with water and bringing it back up. At the end of the video, Reznor's feet have become entangled in the tape and wires as he is lifted off the ground, hung upside-down and writhes in mid-air.

When the video was shown on Beavis and Butt-Head in 1993, the "Copper" mix was used in place of the "Clay" mix.
"Demon Seed" is the tenth and final song on the Nine Inch Nails album The Slip. It contains the same overlapped lyrical style as The Greater Good and The New Flesh.

The image associated with this song appears to be a four part image of a square becoming more complete or "growing", much like the lyrics portray something growing inside of the narrator.
The Perfect Drug
This is the original version that can be found on the Lost Highway soundtrack as well as some versions of The Perfect Drug Versions and the We're In This Together single. The version on the We're In This Together single is several seconds longer than the previous release, without the abrupt ending.

The Perfect Drug (Meat Beat Manifesto)
This remix is almost a dub mix: it is very light on lyrics and emphasizes the percussion beat of the song. The word "annihilate" is added at some points and leads this remix out of the breakdown and into the ending portion. "The only lyrics in this version are "And I want you" and "You are the perfect drug."

The Perfect Drug (Plug)
Incorporating dream-like synths and a danceable rhythm, this remix is notable for its synth rendition of the opening strains of the song. The last few lyrics of the first verse are used, "You are the perfect drug" is heard at the breakdown, and vocal instrumentation has been added. "Take me with you" is repeated at the end of this remix.

The Perfect Drug (Nine Inch Nails)
This remix begins with Reznor whispering "You are the perfect drug." The vocals are distorted a bit in this intro. A dance beat and wind are added over the vocals. The lyrics are then sung about a third of the way through, as the beat becomes heavier and the synths build in volume. By the middle of the song, the music becomes much louder as the lyric "Take me with you" is whispered over it. Vocal instrumentation, albeit distorted, is also incorporated into this remix.

The Perfect Drug (Spacetime Continuum)
Windchime-like instrumentation over a percussive beat and the whispered lyric "You are the perfect drug" open this remix. It then goes into a percolating beat, with a simple melody over a pulsing bass. This could be considered one of the "quieter" mixes of the song, as it is not as aggressive as the other remixes.

The Perfect Drug (The Orb)
This remix begins with the lyric "You are the perfect drug" heavily distorted as a swirling beat comes in over it. The word "drug" is also repeated at various points in this version. At about three minutes in, the lyric "Take me with you" is repeated as the mix goes into a pseudo-breakdown. At the breakdown, a bass line over percussion, leads into the song's finale.

The Perfect Drug (Aphrodite)
This remix is exclusive to the vinyl edition of The Perfect Drug Versions. It's set in a different key than the other remixes and has a fast, electronic beat. As with most of the other remixes, it is light on lyrics, consisting only of "can't keep control/can't keep track," "taking me," and "you are perfect." A CD-quality MP3 file of the track was uploaded by Reznor on remix.nin.com.

Live
"The Perfect Drug" has never been played live. It is widely speculated that the complex drum solo in the song is responsible for this, although it is not out of the range of the talented Josh Freese. It is also likely that Trent does not personally like the song very much, as he concedes it was produced quickly for the Lost Highway soundtrack.

Music Video
Mark Romanek, who also directed "Closer," directed "The Perfect Drug" in 1997. It was one of the most expensive videos at the time as the costs of building a refrigerated set, renting period costumes, and securing use of Gustav Klimt's The Kiss painting were all factors in the almost $1 million cost.

The concept of the video is widely interpreted as Trent Reznor portraying a man mourning the death of a child and detaching himself from reality through absinthe. Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner, and Chris Vrenna appear in the video, most notably playing string instruments at the beginning of the video. The aesthetics were heavily influenced by the illustrations of 20th-century artist Edward Gorey (1925–2000), the most obvious reference coming from the boy sitting on the cushion in front of the painting.

The entire video was filmed with a blue tint with the exception of the drum breakdown, which uses flashing green light instead, representing Reznor losing himself in the absinthe.

Lyrics
I got my head, but my head is unraveling
Can't keep control, can't keep track of where it's traveling
I got my heart but my heart's no good
And you're the only one that's understood
I come along but I don't know where you're taking me
I shouldn't go but you're wrenching, dragging, shaking me
Turn off the sun, pull the stars from the sky
The more I give to you, the more I die

And I want you
You are the perfect drug
The perfect drug
The perfect drug

You make me hard when I'm all soft inside
I see the truth when I'm all stupid-eyed
The arrow goes straight through my heart
Without you everything just falls apart
My blood wants to say hello to you
My fears want to get inside of you
My soul is so afraid to realize
How very little there is left of me

And I want you
You are the perfect drug
The perfect drug
The perfect drug

Take me, with you
Without you
Without you everything falls apart
Without you it's not as much fun to pick up the pieces

The last line of the second verse has been the subject of some arguments over what is being said. Among the other possibilities:
how very little good is left of me
how every little word is lack of me
how every little bit is left of me
"The Four of Us Are Dying" is the ninth track on the Nine Inch Nails album The Slip. It is an instrumental. The "four" of the title may be a reference to the four members of this album's incarnation of Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor, Josh Freese, Robin Finck and Alessandro Cortini.

The art work that is accompanied the track seems to show four figures holding guns to their heads.
You
What you looking at?
Head down
Too late for that
What you want
What you get
Know your place
Don't ever forget

And this is not my face
And this is not my life
And there is not a single thing here
I can recognize
This is all a dream
And none of you are real
I'll give anything
I'll give anything

Hey you
What you running from?
All your hate
What you've become
Bet you didn't think
It would happen to you
All used up
Half way through

And this is not my face
1.
It keeps growing
And I can feel it breathe
I have been trying
To behave myself
It keeps growing
And I can feel it breathe
I have been trying
To tolerate you

2.
Well I am reaching the point
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

3.
I thought maybe
I thought this would go away
But it continues
The only constant
Every day
Stronger

4.
I will use my voice
And I will use my fist
To destroy
Everything I can

5.
Now I know
What this is all about
Now I know
Exactly what I am

6.
There is a seed
Inside of me
That makes me

Corona Radiata are several protective layers surrounding ova or unfertilized egg cells, responsible with supplying the ova or egg cell with protein. The artwork for the song most probably represents an egg cell with the distinct corona radiata surrounding it.

She's mostly gone
Some other place
I'm getting by
In other ways
Everything they whispered in our ear
Is coming true
Try to justify the things
I used to do
Believe in you

Watching you drown
I'll follow you down
And I am here right beside you
The lights in the sky
Have finally arrived
I am staying right beside you

I tried to stay away
You know
Just in case
I've come to realize
We all have our place
Time has a way you know
To make it clear
I have my role in this
I can't disappear
Or leave you here

Watching you drown
I'll follow you down
And I am here right beside you
The lights in the sky
Are waving goodbye
I am staying right beside you
}}"Discipline" is the latest single from Nine Inch Nails. It contains a beat reminiscent of "Only" from 2005's With Teeth and the lyrics seem to have a sado-masochistic overtone.

The song was released to radio stations simultaneously around 2:30pm EST on April 22, 2008, being mastered only the day before, and was then made available as a free download via the official Nine Inch Nails website. When downloaded, it comes with track art and a note found in the comments box of the song info saying "Go to www.nin.com on May 5," possibly confirming rumors of a new EP. It is possible that each square on the cover represents a track of the ep. The lyrics are also contained.

"Discipline" is the first radio single from NIN since becoming an independent recording act, following their final release under a major record label, 2007's Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. Due to the advertisement and short notice of the release, the song was posted on YouTube almost immediately after release.

When downloading the song from discipline.nin.com, the process involves submitting an email address and a zip/postal code, opening the email and clicking the download link, then putting the token code into the website after clicking the link. A .zip file is automatically downloaded once the token and link have registered. In addition, the multitrack files can be found at remix.nin.com.
Lyrics
Am I still tough enough?
Feels like I’m wearing down
Is my viciousness
Losing ground?
Am I taking too much
Did I cross a line
I need my role in this
Very clearly defined
I need your discipline
I need your help
I need your discipline
You know once I start I cannot help myself

And now it's starting up
feels like I'm losing touch
Nothing matters to me
Nothing matters as much
I see you left a mark
Up and down my skin
I don't know where I end
And where you begin
I need your discipline
I need your help
I need your discipline
You know once I start I cannot help myself
Once I start I cannot stop myself

Lyrics
Am I still tough enough?
Feels like I’m wearing down
Is my viciousness
Losing ground?
Am I taking too much
Did I cross a line
I need my role in this
Very clearly defined
I need your discipline
I need your help
I need your discipline
You know once I start I cannot help myself

And now it's starting up
feels like I'm losing touch
Nothing matters to me
Nothing matters as much
I see you left a mark
Up and down my skin
I don't know where I end
And where you begin
I need your discipline
I need your help
I need your discipline
You know once I start I cannot help myself
Once I start I cannot stop myself
