Notes
*This performance was initially scheduled for September 5, 2009, but was postponed due to Trent Reznor being ill, making it the last NIN show "for the foreseeable future" (until the NIN 2013-2014 tour.)
*At 38 songs and over 3 hours in length, this performance was the longest in NIN's career.
*Before performing "Ruiner," Reznor stated:
:"This is it… but I'm not gonna break down in tears just yet."
*Mike Garson once again guested on "Just Like You Imagined," "La Mer," "Eraser," and "The Becoming," as well as on the set of Gary Numan covers, including Garson's own solo version of Down In The Park.
*Gary Numan once again guested on his songs "Down In The Park," "Metal," and "I Die: You Die."
*Atticus Ross guested on "Me, I'm Not," "The Warning," and "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)."
*Dave Navarro guested on "The Warning," "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)," and "Gave Up."
*All members of Dillinger Escape Plan guested on "Mr. Self Destruct" and "Wish."
*"The Great Below" was included on the setlist in between "Eraser" and "The Becoming" but was omitted from the performance.

Nine Inch Nails played at the Rock Am See Festival in Konstanz, Germany, on September 1, 2007.

Notes
*Trent Reznor wrote the following in his Spiral blog after the concert:

One of the problems that we seem to continuously encounter across Europe is the incredible incompetence and / or
greed on the part of the promoters over here. I bring (and pay for) a substantial amount of production (sound and
lights) to make the show something incredible for you to witness. Time after time these motherfuckers promise
certain specific things that are required in terms of the size of the stage or the power necessary to use the stuff
and guess what? You got it. We show up and there's a lot of finger pointing and excuse making. This happened tonight
at the truly awful Rock AM See Fuck Fest in Konstanz Germany.

*After this blog entry was posted, numerous stories began popping up about what exactly had happened and who should take the blame. Nine Inch Nails argues that months in advance the promoter promised in writing that they would be able to meet the power demands spelled out in the band's technical rider. The day of the concert there were reports of a blackout in the town of Konstanz, which may have forced the concert organizers to cut back on elecricity. Whether or not the required power was there from the get-go and later reduced, or that there wasn't enough power to begin with is still being debated and hasn't been cleared up. The band was informed shortly before they were to take the stage that there wasn't enough power for their light show. They were ready to just leave but Reznor didn't want to disappoint the people who had been waiting to see the band perform. He ultimately agreed to perform but asked for a fee of US$50 000 to cover the costs of bringing the equipment and taking it down, and as a restitution. The promoter stated that they couldn't pay that much and the parties settled on US$30 000 instead. After the performance was over, the promoter allegedly refused to pay the fine, citing that Reznor had "threatened to kill him." (Reznor had stated onstage during "March Of The Pigs" that "Actually, killing the promoter would make me feel better right now.") The promoter has argued that they had enough power all along and it wasn't until the last minute that he realized there would be a problem. He feels that the band's management and light technicians should have known this and worked around it, or that they should have spelled out more specifically exactly what their power needs would be. The issue is still being debated and may end up going to the courts.
*"Hurt" was aborted about 20 seconds into the song after someone shouted for Reznor to play "Head Like A Hole." Reznor threw his keyboard down and the band promptly began playing "The Hand That Feeds." Reznor didn't sing any of the lyrics until the first chorus, clearly expressing his compounded anger and frustration with the entire experience at this concert.
}}Robin Finck (born November 7, 1971) is from Georgia and is the lead guitarist of Nine Inch Nails. Finck is one of only a few artists who have played two bands listed on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock:" Nine Inch Nails (#43) and Guns N' Roses (#9).

Career
Finck began his career by playing for many local Atlanta bands, such as Prowess (who later changed their name to Bat Your Lashes and then Sik Dik), The Hookers and Heroin (also known as Impotent Sea Snakes {ISS} when in drag). He joined Nine Inch Nails in 1994-95 for the Self Destruct Tour. Finck also appeared with the band at Woodstock '94 and on 1997's Closure.

Following touring with NIN he took a job playing for Cirque du Soleil and in late 1996 was recruited by Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses to replace Slash. Finck later rejoined NIN as part of the live band for the Fragility Tour and appears on the accompanying album/DVD, And All That Could Have Been. Shortly after the NIN tour ended in late 2000, he returned to GN'R and remained in the line-up for almost 8 years, even turning down an offer to re-join NIN in 2005, but inevitably re-joined again in 2008.

Robin Finck was announced via www.nin.com to again be in Nine Inch Nails on April 4, 2008 after an 8 year stint with GnR.

Finck is a noted bird enthusiast, and his website discusses his fastination with them. Many NIN fans have noted after hearing of his avian fascination that many of his changes to NIN songs during the Fragility tour stems from his bird-sound-inspired choice of guitar tones and sounds. This is especially notable on the pre-solo section to "The Wretched" and "Just Like You Imagined."
There is something wrong with this table. I mean, 5 rows for PHM-era and 1 per last three albums? WTF? I'd like to chanege it a bit, so it will look like:
*Self Destruct era 1994-1996
*Fragility era 1999-2000
*With Teeth era 2005-2006
*Year Zero era 2007
*special shows

Tables for the subpages:

Tell me if you agree or not, and what should I change. -fillow
:Here's my suggestion:
:*Lump the Pretty Hate tours together and call it Pretty Hate Machine tours
:*Retain the "Self Destruct" name but include the legs of that tour on the page, naming each individual tour. (The early 1995 tour was called "Further Down The Spiral.")
:*"Fragility," splitting it between 1.0 and 2.0
:*"Live: With Teeth," and break it down into each tour leg. (The 2006 amphitheatre tour was known as the "Inconvenient Truth" tour.)
:*"Performance 2007," broken down into each leg.
:There is no need to use the word "era" for each of these tours. I hope my suggestions help you.--Leo3375 10:53, 20 September 2007 (PDT)
::Is it okay if I create separated articles for each leg? -fillow 02:14, 22 September 2007 (PDT)
:::I don't see why not.--Leo3375 04:44, 22 September 2007 (PDT)
::::I don't know venues for 1st and 3rd TR&P.Murphy shows, KROQ breakfast and OSR meeting. Need help on these.-fillow 14:21, 22 September 2007 (PDT)
LITS
I think it makes more sense to add LITS rehearsal show to the LITS tour page and not on unabridged dates. -fillow 15:48, 22 July 2008 (PDT)

| live = Live: With Teeth through Performance 2007
}}"You Know What You Are?" is the second track from 2005's With Teeth. It is a very aggressive and upbeat song, featuring a gang-shouting chorus and heavy guitar tracks. A remix of this song by Clint Mansell appeared on the Doom soundtrack, and played during of end credits of that movie. The title strongly resembles a track on the Head Like A Hole single, entitled "You Know Who You Are."

Interpretation
The lyrics of the song appear to be commenting on a person's inability to change for the better, evident in lyrics such as "You can dress it all up you can try to pretend/But you can't change anything in the end." and "Don't you fucking know what you are?/Go on get back to where you belong." Many interpretions of this song often overlook the possibility that the "you" to which Trent Reznor refers, may in fact be himself.
This is the original album version.

You Know What You Are? (Clint Mansell Remix)
This is a remix by Clint Mansell created for the soundtrack to the movie adaptation of Doom. It closely resembles the original version, with some altered vocal effects and a different mix.

You Know What You Are? (Beside You In Time)
This version can be seen and heard on the Beside You In Time DVD. The band omit the ending wah guitar and piano, ending the song once the last chorus finishes.

Live
"You Know What You Are?" has become a staple of Nine Inch Nails' live performances. The song, when performed live, sounds very similar to the album version. The only big differences are more intense guitar sounds and improvisational soloing by Aaron North during the bridge.

Lyrics
I tried to sneak myself through I tried to get to the other side
I tried to patch up the cracks and the holes that I have to hide
For a little bit of time even made it work okay
Just long enough to really make it hurt
When they figured me out and it all just rotted away

Don’t you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong

You better take a good look because I’m full of shit
With every bit of my heart I have tried to believe in it
You can dress it all up you can try to pretend
But you can’t change anything
You can’t change anything in the end

Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong

Remember where you came from remember what you are
The Warning: Real World
This remix featuring African drummer Doudou N'Diaye Rose is on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. It starts with a piano melody that is joined by drum elements. The verse features the vocals over a drum beat accompanied by a droning synth. Oddly enough, the lyric "You piss it all away" was censored on this mix. The new synths and the drums create an even more foreboding atmosphere than what is heard in the Year Zero original. At the end a sound element similar to the guitar in the original is heard under the fading synths.
Lyrics
Some say it was a warning
Some say it's a sign
I was standing right there
When it came down from the sky
The way it spoke to us
You felt it from inside
Said it was up to us
Up to us to decide
"You've become a virus
Killing off his host
We been watching you with all of our eyes
And what you seem to value most
So much potential
Or so we used to say
Your greed, self-importance and your arrogance
You piss it all away
We heard her cry
We have come to intervene
You will change your ways and you will make amends
Or we will wipe this place clean"

Your time is ticking away

The second line is said as follows in the actual recording:
Some say it was a sign

That last line of the song is said as follows in the actual recording:
Your time is tick-tick-ticking away
Yes, I am becoming
And this is how it all begins
What did you expect?
This is not an exit
This has begun
I can almost see
The blackest eyes
The new flesh
A new disguise
...Welcoming...
Please
Give it to me
I can take it
Give it to me
}}"The Line Begins To Blur" is the eleventh track on the 2005 release With Teeth.

The last three songs on With Teeth describe the protagonists views of the world and the way things are going in it, i.e., the way he would like things to be going. On this track, He expresses how what he believed, along with that which he believed in, is changing, shooting off in radical directions. He speaks as if it was destined to be this way, as if he saw it coming all along. This song, along with "Beside You In Time" and "Right Where It Belongs" can almost be seen as a prequel to Year Zero, as they speak about corruption in man's heart, and the world changing, revealing something not before seen ("The Line Begins To Blur" definitely seems to lead up to the Resistance Theory, and Trent Reznor's struggle coping with a world that has completely devolved around him, as the chorus says, "As far as I have gone/I knew what side I'm on/But now I'm not so sure/The line begins to blur… ") All in all, a grungy set of verses coupled with a beautiful set of choruses and a harmonic ending combine to form a powerful and thought provoking piece of music.

Lyrics
There are things that I said I would never do
There are fears that I cannot believe have come true
For my soul is too sick and too little and too late
And my self I have grown too weary to hate

The more I stay in here
The more it's not so clear
The more I stay in here
The more I disappear
As far as I have gone
I knew what side I'm on
But now I'm not so sure
The line begins to blur

Is there somebody on top of me?
I don't know, I don't know
Isn't anybody stopping me?
I don't know, I don't know
Well I'm trying to hold my breath
Just how far down can I go?
I don't know, I don't know
I don’t know

As I lie here and stare
The fabric starts to tear
It's far beyond repair
And I don't really care
As far as I have gone
I knew what side I'm on
But now I'm not so sure
The line begins to blur
This instrumental is on the Survivalism single. The only significant differences between this and the original are a lack of vocals and an additional 10 seconds of the synth line without the drums at the beginning. This may be because the synth line starts during the last few seconds of "Meet Your Master" in the Year Zero version.
This remix by modwheelmood appears on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. It begins with the vocals sung over a guitar before bass and drums join in as the first verse is repeated. As the chorus comes in, a synth beat and melody play under echoing vocals, singing a melody different than what's in the original version. Layers of sound are gradually added in the second verse, creating an ominous sound and tone to the song.
Try to speak as clearly as you can
You know everything gets written down
Nod your head
Just in case they could be watching
With their shiny satellites

I hope they cannot see
The limitless potential
Living inside of me
To murder everything
I hope they cannot see
I am the Great Destroyer

Turn it up
Listen to the shit they pump into
Your head
Filling you with apathy
Hold your breath
Wait until you know the time is right
On time
The end is near
}}"The Good Soldier" is the fourth track on the 2007 release Year Zero. The chorus of this song includes the lyrics "I Am Trying To Believe."

Alan Cross from 102.1 CFNYFM The Edge in Toronto had this song "mysteriously show up" in his office. His description of this song is "Moody, slower. Great grind-y bass synth groove. A natural pick for a single!"
Trivia
A 'Good Soldier' is another term for a samovar (a decorative metal tea dispensing device that resembles a keg and is traditionally used in Russia).
The "Good Soldier" could be the captain from the comic book portrayed at the website One Country At A Time.
The Good Soldier—Sam Fog Mix (Friend Or Faux 001)
This remix is on the vinyl edition of Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. A false intro begins this remix before the lyrics "And the bass goes/Bomb" formally start the track. At one point, it seems as though the song is brought a half-step higher in tone than on the Year Zero original. A three-minute outro ends the song, which finishes with percussion fading into the main riff, much like how the song started.

Live
"The Good Soldier" was played live for the first time on May 9, 2007 at Luna Park in Sydney, Australia, on the Performance 2007 tour.

Lyrics
Where we used to meet
Echoes out a beat and the bass goes
Bomb right over my head
Step over the dead
Remember what you said you know, the part about
Life is just a waking dream
I know what you mean
But that ain't how it seems right here and how
How can all this be real
There's nowhere left to hide
'Cause God is on our side
I keep telling myself

I am trying to see
I am trying to believe
This is not where I should be
I am trying to believe

No one's even sure
What we're fighting for
Or who we even are
Anymore
I feel
So far away

Some changes were made in the final recorded lyrics:
*The final stanza does not appear in the song at all.
*The ninth line of the first verse saw a slight change:
But that ain't how it seems right here right now

*The third and fourth lines of the second verse were slightly reworded:
Help you understand
}}"The Day The World Went Away" is the second track on the Left disc of The Fragile. It was released as a single preceding the release of The Fragile and received the designation of Halo 13.

Meaning
The song's lyrics are rumored to be about the death of Trent Reznor's maternal grandmother, which occured before The Fragile was recorded. Analysis of the lyrics do support the theory of this song being about death, but no one can say with any certainty what Reznor's inspiration was.

Structure
"The Day The World Went Away" follows the percussive and aggressive "Somewhat Damaged." It is one of Nine Inch Nails' most uniquely structured songs and it is musically the opposite of "Somewhat Damaged" in almost every way, actually lacking the use of any percussion. It also features the use of a mandolin, another first for NIN.

Song Credits
The Day The World Went Away
This is the original album version, found on both The Day The World Went Away (in edited form and with a different vocal take) and The Fragile. Its introductory guitar chords are extended by roughly 30 seconds on The Fragile vinyl version.

The Day The World Went Away (Quiet)
This is a very different version of the song. The structure was changed significantly, moving the chanting to the beginning of the song and featuring additional vocals by Kim Prevost. This remix was done by Reznor.

The Day The World Went Away (Porter Ricks mix)
This dub remix done by Porter Ricks revolves around a thumping beat. The distant vocals can be heard beneath it.

The Day The World Went Away (And All That Could Have Been)
The DVD version of And All That Could Have Been featured this song as an Easter Egg. Unused clips from the scrapped video are merged with live performance footage. The CD version features this song in the regular playlist.

The Day The World Went Away (Still)
A stripped down, acoustic version of this song was included on the Still album.
Music Video
This song is among the many Nine Inch Nails songs that have had a video scrapped. The video, which was partially finished, apparently showed images of a funeral. Parts of the video appeared as an Easter Egg on the DVD version of And All That Could Have Been.

The footage contains black-and-white footage of Reznor in a forest, and color images of a black kingsnake slithering in sand. It also includes Reznor standing in a room with his back to the camera and shows flowers, as well as a feather blowing in the wind. The second half of the video contains live performance footage of the band.

Live
"The Day The World Went Away" has been performed live since the Fragility tour started in 1999.

Lyrics
I’d listen to the words he’d say
But in his voice I heard decay
The plastic face forced to portray
All the insides left cold and gray
There is a place that still remains
It eats the fear it eats the pain
The sweetest price he’ll have to pay
The day the whole world went away
And it picks up feelings
For me to feed upon
There are times, plenty of times
I wish I could let it go
But they start to breathe
And they start to grow inside me
There are times, plenty of times
I wish I could let it go
But they start to make me think
Things I don’t want to know

I’m trying to fit it all inside
I’m trying to open my mouth wide
I’m trying not to choke and
Swallow it all
Swallow it all
Swallow it all
Swallow it all

I am the plague
I am the swarm
All your hurt sticks on me
And I keep it warm
They make me stay
They won’t let me leave
There are so God damned many of them
It gets hard to breathe

I’m trying to fit it all inside
I’m trying to open my mouth wide
I’m trying not to choke inside
I am a good boy and
Will swallow it all
Swallow it all
Swallow it all
Swallow it all

Every last one
Every last one
Every last one
Every last one
This remix can be found on Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. More techno-oriented than the album original and containing a dance beat, it also contains some distorted vocals in the verses. This distortion can also be heard in the choruses. By the time the second verse comes in, another synth line joins in, creating a noisier atmosphere. More synths—this time sounding like a choir—join in the chorus. These layers of sound carry the song to the end of the piece. At about 3:36 into the song, a variation of The Downward Spiral motif can be heard ending the song:
}}"Terrible Lie" is the second track on the 1989 release Pretty Hate Machine and begins directly at the end of "Head Like A Hole" (the end of the latter providing a segue into the beginning of the former).

Meaning
The song is about having a belief in God while wondering about all the suffering (mostly personal/internal suffering) that one goes through in life, about wanting to believe and wanting to be hopeful but being constantly proved wrong by events in one's life. Its "everyman" subject matter and distinct melody make it one of Nine Inch Nails' better known songs and a staple of the live concerts.
Terrible Lie
The second track from the album Pretty Hate Machine, it is perhaps the most industrial selection on the record. Its intro beat bleeds in from the outro of "Head Like A Hole" and pops up occasionally throughout the song. The song is almost entirely synthetic and is extremely layered when compared to most of the other songs on the album.

Terrible Lie (Sympathetic Mix)
Present on the Head Like A Hole single, this version is essentially the same as the album version with a few slight differences such as an unadulterated intro, a bit less layering and different arrangements, as well as a different outro and ending. Due to its similarity to the album version, however, it's often considered more of a "single mix" for the song, which is used as a B-Side to Head Like A Hole.

Song Credits
Terrible Lie (Empathetic Mix)
Present on the Head Like A Hole single, this version is notably more remixed than the other version, lacking the normal intro and is much more upbeat as well with different arrangements of the main parts of the song, though the flow of the song remains intact. The background noises are much clearer as well and the song is noticeably extended in this version. Some of the lyrics (such as the distorted "Hey God!") are much clearer in this version as well. It also has a different ending as well.

Song Credits
*Production and mix: Flood, Trent Reznor

Terrible Lie (Closure)
"Terrible Lie" is the first song from a live performance shown on Closure. It follows footage from Nine Inch Nails fans and protesters alike as well as backstage footage. The classic "Pinion" intro leads into "Terrible Lie" and a spotlight projects the silhouette of Reznor onto the screen. The band is covered in cornstarch as per usual for the era and Reznor finishes up half singing/half saying "you promised me" into the mike. The video then goes to more fan and backstage footage and is eventually followed by "Piggy."

Terrible Lie (And All That Could Have Been)
The first song on both the CD and DVD/VHS versions of And All That Could Have Been, the song takes place with just the multi colored set lighting on and doesn't have any special motif to it. During certain shots, one can see the sunset through the opening at the top of the stadium. Reznor can be seen wearing cornstarch makeup and mascara during this song, though most of it doesn't last through "March of the Pigs." The song starts out with the recorded "The New Flesh"/"Pinion" intro typical to the Fragility 2.0 shows, though this is entirely cut off along with the actual intro to the song on the CD version. The song ends with Reznor screaming "You fucking promised me!", before seguing directly into "Sin."

Terrible Lie (Beside You In Time)
The live version of "Terrible Lie," as performed on Beside You In Time, is much moodier than previous versions. During the choruses (during which "terrible lie" is chanted), a previously unheard riff is played by guitar and bass. Also, Reznor seems much more desperate while singing the "Don't take it away from me…" lines in the song. The added "live" solo at the end of the song has also been modified. These changes can likely be attributed to the fact that this is an almost completely new live line up. The music is also much more cleaner and defined than the Fragility tour and on And All That Could Have Been. At the end of the song, the band doesn't play the extended live ending. Instead, they finish the song abruptly, as in the album version.

Live
"Terrible Lie" is often the opening song of Nine Inch Nails shows following the intro tape. The ending of the song is extended when performed live and is often concluded with Reznor screaming "you promised me". At the end of the song, the band has been known to cause a little bit of instrument destruction (though not always). During the Live: With Teeth tours, Aaron North plays a short solo during the last few moments of the song. This is a short, three note repeating solo.
Lyrics
Hey God, why are you doing this to me?
Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be?
Why am I seething with this animosity?
Hey God, I think you owe me a great big apology

Terrible lie

Hey God, I really don't know what you mean
Seems like salvation comes only in our dreams
I feel my hatred grow all the more extreme
Hey God, can this world really be as sad as it seems?

Terrible lie

Don't take it away from me
I need someone to hold on to
Don't take it away from me
I need someone to hold on to

Hey God, there's nothing left for me to hide
I lost my ignorance, security and pride
I'm all alone in a world you must despise
Hey God, I believed the promises, the promises and lies

Terrible lie

You made me throw it all away
My morals left to decay
How many you betray
You've taken everything

Terrible lie

My head is filled with disease
My skin is begging you please
I'm on my hands and knees
I want so much to believe
I need someone to hold on to
I need someone to hold on to
I need someone to hold on to
I need someone to hold on to
I give you everything
My sweet everything

Hey God, I really don't know who I am
In this world of piss.

It should be noted that the following line was changed on the recording:
Hey God, I believed your promises, your promises and lies
}}"Survivalism" is the third track and the first single from the 2007 album Year Zero.

Survivalism is the belief that one must be prepared to survive a major catastrophe by stocking up on food and weapons. A survivalist therefore is a person who anticipates and prepares for a future disruption in local, regional or worldwide social or political order. Survivalists often prepare for this anticipated disruption by learning skills (e.g., emergency medical training), stockpiling food and water, or building structures that will help them to survive (e.g., an underground shelter).

On March 13, the source files for the song were released in GarageBand format at NIN.com. According to the site, the source files of all songs from Year Zero will be made available to download, free of charge. "Survivalism" is the third NIN song to be officially released as source files—"Only" and "The Hand That Feeds" were previously released.
Included on the Survivalism single and Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D, this remix was created by Williams and Thavius Beck. The music isn't as guitar-driven as the album version and the chorus consists of Reznor's vocals with Williams' vocal contributions reduced significantly. The breakdown repeats the lyric "All a part of this great nation." There is also hand-clap percussion over pulsating beats and some distortion on Reznor's vocals at some points in the song. Although it may not seem as heavy as the original, it's still heavy in terms of percussion.
Survivalism_OpalHeartClinic_Niggy_Tardust!(Escaped...
Available on the UK 9" Vinyl Survivalism single. This remix, also by Williams, features him incorporating new lyrics into the verses and delivering them with more of a spoken word/hip-hop flow. Reznor's vocals become backing vocals on this track, allowing Williams to come to the front. The music is very similar to that used in the "Tardusted" version. The new lyrics sung by Williams are as follows:
Wanted to cap somebody
Wanted to buck them down
Wanted to pull the trigger
Just to hear the fucking sound
I got my propaganda
I get my cable free
I hang it from my neck
And go to work from tree to tree
It's got to be the poison
They're putting in my food
It takes me by the brain
And marks me to my every move
I try to change the channel
The channel is changing me
I take the cup and prop it up
Before I start to pee

I'm spread out on the toilet
I'm sprawled across the floor
I feel my head expand
Beyond the room
Beyond the door
I'm in the oval office
In an electric chair
I sign my name
Beneath the claim
That I don't really care
I got survivalism
You got my claim to fame
I got the right to say
I'm fighting under Jesus' name
I see the .45's
But I wont act surprised
Lost my faith along the way
And found myself believing your lies

It should also be noted that the spoken word rhythm of this remix has a strong resemblance to Williams' song "P.G." from Saul Williams.

Survivalism (David Sitek Remix)
This remix was originally available as a UK-only iTunes download. It came as a free bonus track packaged with the full album download of Year Zero. It is alternatively available on the Capital G single. It is akin to the original song sound-wise, but features a heavier and more plodding drum line. Additionally, it enhances Williams' back up vocals and makes them more prominent than in the original. The structure and length of the song remains relatively unchanged.
Music Video
Filming for the "Survivalism" video began on February 5, 2007. It was directed by Alex Lieu, Rob Sheridan, and Reznor, and produced by Susan Bonds. The video was "leaked" to the internet via flash drives found dotted around the venue by people attending the Nine Inch Nails concert in London on March 7, 2007.

SPOILERS BEGIN

A wall of surveillance monitors details the activities of several people in an apartment building. A group of rebels is creating stencils and spray-painting the "Art Is Resistance" logo on walls. In an apartment, a pair of gay lovers share an intimate moment. In another dwelling, a young asian woman stands topless at her mirror doing her hair and applying make-up. Elsewhere someone is high on drugs, while a couple just sits on their couch in their home. A man is seen on a computer with several photos and news clippingsbehind him. Another man is seen on camera eating his dinner. Seen on several monitors is Nine Inch Nails playing the song in what is assumed to be their practice space. Intercut with these scenes is footage of armed soldiers, dressed like SWAT members, moving in on the building and one of the spaces in the video.

At the end of the video the people in the other monitors seem to respond to an ado in one of the spaces seen on the monitor wall. The space where NIN was playing has its door busted in and a pool of blood leading out, while all of the other cameras trained on the band have gone to static. At the very end a body is seen being dragged around a corner, leaving a trail of blood. Presumably the body is that of Reznor, as it wears the same scarf that he is seen wearing throughout the video.

END SPOILERS

The video has aired on MTV2, but in a censored form. The screens with the woman at her mirror and the gay lovers have been replaced by a white screen bearing the seal of the US Bureau of Morality and the phrase "CENSORED FOR YOUR PROTECTION." This is not unlike the use of SCENE MISSING screens in the "Closer" video. Interestingly enough, the word "whore" and the screen depicting the girl using opal are left intact. Even the ending scenes of the pool of blood in the band's space and the body getting dragged off are retained.

Notes
* The graffiti wall has "Isaiah 15:9" written on it. The biblical verse for this is: "For the waters of Dimon shall be full of blood: for I will bring more upon Dimon, lions upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land."
* The picture of Jesus in the "TV Room" has "John 19:34" written on it. The biblical verse for this is: "But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water."
* "Exodus 7:21" is visible in the room with the man on the computer. The biblical verse for this is: "And the fish that [was] in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt."
* "II Kings 3:22" is visible in the room with the man on the computer. The biblical verse for this is: "And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood."
* The door knocked in has "Rev 18.3.4" painted on its exterior. The biblical verses Revelation 18:3 and 18:4 are: "For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies," and "And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues."
Lyrics
I should have listened to her
So hard to keep control
We kept on eating but our
Bloated bellies still not full
She gave us all she had but
We went and took some more
Can't seem to shut her legs our
Mother Nature is a whore

I got my propaganda I got revisionism
I got my violence in high def ultra-realism
All a part of this great nation
I got my fist I got my plan I got survivalism

Hypnotic sound of sirens
Echoing through the street
The cocking of the rifles
The marching of the feet
You see your world on fire
Don't try to act surprised
We did just what you told us
Lost our faith along the way and found ourselves believing your lies

I got my propaganda I got revisionism
I got my violence in high def ultra-realism
All a part of this great nation
I got my fist I got my plan I got survivalism

All bruised and broken, bleeding
She asks to take my hand
I turn and keep on walking
What you'd do the same thing in the circumstance I'm sure you understand

I got my propaganda I got revisionism
I got my violence in high-def ultra-realism
All a part of this great nation
I got my fist I got my plan I got survivalism

It should be noted, however, that the last lines of the third verse are changed to the following on the actual recording:
I turn just keep on walking
What you'd do the same thing in the circumstance I'm sure you'll understand
}}"Suck" is the second hidden track on 1992's Broken EP. Originally packaged with "Physical (You're So)" on a Mini CD sold with the EP, it was later incorporated onto the EP as a hidden track after allegations that some music stores were removing the Mini CD and selling it separately. "Suck" is track 99 on Broken while "Physical (You're So)" is track 98.

"Suck" was originally written and performed by Pigface, a band lead by Martin Atkins featuring Trent Reznor as well as many other notable Industrial musicians. Other notable singers of the song within Pigface include Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy, who even shared the song as a duet with Reznor. Since 1994, it has become one of the regular songs played by Nine Inch Nails.

According to a previously unreleased interview Reznor did with Melody Maker magazine, "Suck" was supposed to be a "tongue-in-cheek" cover. The multitracks for the original Pigface version of the song were released for a remix contest.
}}"Starfuckers, Inc." is the sixth track on the right disc of The Fragile. It has been speculated that this is a parody of Marilyn Manson and his lifestyle.

The beginning vocals are spliced together, as a jab at Manson's inability to sing songs in a single take.

Etymology
The word "Starfucker" was apparently the original title of the Rolling Stones song "Star Star," released on the 1973 album, Goats Head Soup. The term "starfucker" was later used by the artist Tori Amos in her song "Professional Widow," released on her 1996 album, Boys For Pele. In this song, the eponymous "professional widow" and "starfucker" is widely considered to be Courtney Love. Both of these songs preceded "Starfuckers, Inc."
This live version is similar to the album original, with the exception being an extended breakdown, and Reznor declaring, "Well, fuck you."

An Easter Egg on the DVD includes a performance of this song at Madison Square Garden in New York City with Manson. It then goes into a performance of Manson's "The Beautiful People." They had re-established a friendship, which did not last long after that performance.

Music Video
The video for "Starfuckers, Inc." was released in 2000 under the name "Starsuckers, Inc." due to censorship issues. The interlude lyrics were also changed for the video, allegedly to avoid a copyright infringement lawsuit.

SPOILERS BEGIN

A glammed-out Reznor and a strung-out, leggy blonde are riding in the back of a limousine. They stop at a run-down carnival at a trailer park and participate in the games there. These games include throwing CDs in a toilet, smashing plates bearing head shots of popular musicians, breaking busts of various musicians (including Reznor himself), and a dunk tank the involves a large man dressed like Courtney Love falling into a tank filled with toxic waste.

At this point in the video, it becomes a commentary on the state of music at the time. Bands like Limp Bizkit were extremely popular while Smashing Pumpkins and REM seemed to be past their prime in the eyes of the record labels and many consumers.

After the dunk tank, Reznor and the blonde return to the car. It is then that the blonde is revealed to be Manson dressed in drag. Many people speculated that the feud between Reznor and Manson had ended.

SPOILERS END

The video contains several references to the films of David Lynch. The opening scene with the road and the red-tinted scenes refer to Lost Highway. The limousine and Reznor's clothes and oxygen mask refer to the character Frank Booth in Blue Velvet, who has an addiction to gases and is the perfect figure of depravity.

Live
"Starfuckers, Inc." has been played live since the Fragility tour in 1999. During the Live: With Teeth tour, Reznor has stopped the song and skipped the breakdown, bantering to the audience before going right into the song's finale.

Lyrics
My god sits in the back of the limousine
My god comes in a wrapper of cellophane
My god pouts on the cover of the magazine
My god’s a shallow little bitch trying to make the scene

I have arrived and you should believe the hype
I listened to everyone now I know that everyone was right
I’ll be there for you as long as it works for me
I play a game
It’s called insincerity

Starfuckers
Starfuckers
Starfuckers, Inc.
Starfuckers

I am every fucking thing and just a little more
I sold my soul but don’t you dare call me a whore
And when I suck you off not a drop will go to waste
It’s really not so bad you know once you get past the taste
(Asskisser)

Starfuckers
Starfuckers
Starfuckers, Inc.
Starfuckers

All our pain
How did we ever get by without you?
You’re so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you?
Don’t you?
Don’t you?
Don’t you?

Now I belong I’m one of the chosen ones
Now I belong I’m one of the beautiful ones

The first lyric to the second part of the first verse was changed on the actual recording:
I have arrived and this time you should believe the hype
In the "Starsuckers, Inc." music video, the lyrics in the breakdown are changed to:
All our pain
How did we ever get by without you?
Overplayed
And soon you'll make us forget about you
Won't you?
Won't you?
Won't you?
Won't you?

Also, in some versions of the song, the words "Everywhere you go" can be heard during the "Now I belong" outro.
}}"Somewhat Damaged" is the first track on the Left side of the double disc The Fragile. It has a lot of different samples that go building the songs but never make a melody. The first part of the song is in a 3/4 time signature before turning into a 4/4 time signature superimposed over a 3/4 time signature.
Somewhat Damaged
Like "Mr. Self Destruct" on The Downward Spiral, "Somewhat Damaged" introduces the listener to the album's sonic structure. The song is dictated around its simple four note guitar riff, with the first half of the song written in a 9/4 (or a repeating 3/4) time signature. It opens with an acoustic guitar playing the simple riff and layers of abstract sounds slowly fading in. The drums enter, while more acoustic guitars are layered in, echoing the primary guitar. After the first two stanzas, a small interlude occurs, during which the acoustic guitars are replaced with heavily distorted guitars. Reznor's screaming abilities are put on display as the majority of the lyrics are now shrieked out. The last third of the song is written in 4/4 (or a 4/4 time signature superimposed over a 3/4 time signature), while the lyrics are sung in a clashing time signature. These final, peculiarly-structured lyrics are sung over the cacophony of instruments, with sounds of exhaling layered above. The instruments and noises then quickly fade into a crescendoing ambient noise, providing a segue into "The Day The World Went Away."

Somewhat Damaged (Beside You In Time)
This live version is amongst the bonus footage on Beside You In Time. The intro is very different from the album original. Likewise, it's in a lower key than the album version.

Live
Reznor sings in a different key when performing "Somewhat Damaged" live due to the intense vocal stress it would bring normally. During the With_Teeth: Summer Amphitheater Tour, "Somewhat Damaged" had a substantially different introduction.

Lyrics
So impressed with all you do
Tried so hard to be like you
Flew too high and burnt the wing
Lost my faith in everything

Lick around divine debris
Taste the wealth of hate in me
Shedding skin succumb defeat
This machine is obsolete

Made the choice to go away
Drink the fountain of decay
Tear a hole exquisite red
Fuck the rest and stab it dead

Broken bruised forgotten sore
Too fucked up to care anymore
Poisoned to my rotten core
Too fucked up to care anymore

In the back off the side and far away is a place where I hide where I
stay tried to say tried to ask I needed to all alone by myself where
were you?
How could I ever think it’s funny how everything that
swore it wouldn’t change is different now just like you
Would always say we’ll make it through then my head fell apart
and where were you?
How could I ever think it’s funny how everything you swore would
never change is different now like you said you and me make it
through didn’t quite fell apart
where the fuck were you?
}}"Something I Can Never Have" is the fifth track on the 1989 release Pretty Hate Machine. It's a song about lost love and missed chances, though the true story about the song isn't wildly (or at all) known. It is the first song in which Trent Reznor plays a piano and is the first song in which he uses the word "fuck" ("fading fucking reminder").
Something I Can Never Have
This is the original album version. It begins with the decending pitch drone that segues in from "Sanctified" as the piano that dominates for most of the song creeps in. The song is notable for its ambient backing, including conflicting sounds of machinery and nature such as the buzzes, hisses and door slams that accompany the music as well as the ambience of wind and chirping birds buried far behind the "industrial noises." The song itself is fairly straightforward and gets louder as it progresses, notably Reznor's vocals which seem to grow in volume and emotion as the song progresses, the song surging up as it enters the last chorus before the ambience suddenly drops out on the last few lines, draining away and only leaving the chirping birds in the background.

Something I Can Never Have (Natural Born Killers Soundtrack)
An edited/remixed version of the song appearing on the soundtrack to the motion picture, Natural Born Killers, which was arranged and produced by Reznor himself. The song only contains the first verse and chorus, after which it deviates into an alternate piano section which slowly wanders to the song's end. The song also contains samples from the movie as well as several sound effects including:
* A thunderclap (at the very beginning)
* Nocturnal birds (during the fade off of the thunderclap)
* A movie sample of the two main characters (Mickey and Mallory) arguing (just after the piano starts)

Mickey: Let me tell you something, this is the 1990's. Alright?
In this day and age, a man has to have choices.
A man has to have a little bit of variety.
Mallory: What are you talking about, variety? Hostages?
You want to fuck some other women, now?
Is that what you're talking about, Mickey?
Why'd you pick me up? Why'd you take me out
of my fucking house and kill my parents with me?!
Ain't you committed to me?! Where are we fucking going?!!
Mickey: Just relax, alright? It's me, your lover, not some
demon, not your father. Alright, relax.
Mallory: No, you're not my fucking lover. You're not my fucking-
You've been loving me?! You've been fucking loving me?! Huh?!
You've been loving me real...(fade out)

* A rattlesnake (during the movie sample after the man speaks the second time)
* Fire crackling and hissing (towards the end)
* Native American chanting (just after the fire sounds)

Even with the extended piano part, the song is a full minute and forty seconds shorter than its album counterpart.

Something I Can Never Have (Closure)
Coming soon.

Something I Can Never Have (Still)
This stripped-down reworking consists of Reznor on piano and vocals, and Jerome Dillon on guitar. It is the first track on Still and follows the general arrangement of the song, though it completely lacks any of the "industrial ambience" of the original version save for an odd guitar whine during the latter half of the song. It is also nearly a minute longer than its Pretty Hate Machine counterpart.

Something I Can Never Have (Beside You In Time)
After Reznor sings "just a fading fucking reminder," strange "bell-ringing" sound effects are heard in the background (which are more audible on the 5.1 surround tracks).

Something I Can Never Have (Bridge Version)
The second song on the album, like all the songs from this particular performance, is performed entirely with string instruments and Reznor on vocals. No synthetics were used at all during this performance, but the arrangements seem to correlate with extended live version of the song played in concert by Nine Inch Nails.

Live
A difference from the studio version is the noticeably louder drums that are persistent in the choruses. The keyboard part is usually played by the bassist (Danny Lohner and Jeordie White).

During Woodstock '94 and Self Destruct, Trent ended the song with "I can never have... and you will never, ever, ever understand... how I feel."

Since Live: With Teeth, the last chorus has seen an additional rising guitar screech.

Lyrics
I still recall the taste of your tears
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore
Scraping through my head till I don't want to sleep anymore

Come on tell me
Make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing and I'm starting to scare myself
Make this all go away
You make this all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

You always were the one to show me how
Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now
This thing is slowly taking me apart
Grey would be the color if I had a heart

I just want something I can never have

In this place it seems like such a shame
Though it all looks different now, I know it's still the same
Everywhere I look you're all I see
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be

Come on tell me
Make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing and I'm starting to scare myself
Make this all go away
You make this all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have
I just want something I can never have

Think I know what you meant
That night on my bed
Still picking at this scab
I wish you were dead
Your sweat and Perry Ellis
Just stains on my sheets

The very last verse only appears in the Pretty Hate Machine booklet.
}}"Sin" is the seventh track on the 1989 release Pretty Hate Machine. Obviously, this song is about sex, visceral desires, lust and guilt. Remixes were featured on the Sin single along with a B-side (a cover of Queen's "Get Down, Make Love"). The song is often amped up live to a more danceable version of the song.
Sin
This is the original album version from Pretty Hate Machine. The loud cry from the end of "Kinda I Want To" segues into the track as the hisses jump back and forth between the left and right audio channels (the song itself utilizes extensive panning throughout). The song itself is very beat driven with heavy synthetic base (and bass) and uses the lyrics as the melody for most of the song, lacking any real "lead" parts. It's also notable for its unique sample of a loud whistle (the origin of which is unknown).

Sin (Dub)
This remix is almost completely stripped of lyrics, save for the words "sin," "control," and "lies" scattered throughout the track.

Song Credits
*Remix: Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc

Sin (Long)
At nearly six minutes long, this remix has extended instrumentals including a massively extended outro composed of what sounds like wind or running water and muted synthetic chimes.

Sin (Short)
This remix incorporates some of the elements of the "Long" and "Dub" remixes, but it has a more drawn-out outro. This version is used in the music video.

Sin (And All That Could Have Been)
This live version is known for its theremin intro.

Live
The song's intro seems to be performed differently by every NIN keyboardist. For example, Danny Lohner in the Woodstock '94 performance is seen playing an additional melody to the intro. Charlie Clouser in And All That Could Have Been uses a theremin before the guitar intro is played, while Alessandro Cortini's performance of the intro is a tad closer to the original. Other than that, the rest of the song is performed closely to the album version in most live performances.

Music Video
A video was released in 1990, using the "(Short)" remix of the song. It was directed by Brett Turnbull. The video contains two women dancing with each other at the beginning before cutting to the main focus of the video. A woman, nude except for what looks like straps to spelunking gear and a halogen lamp, walking a shirtless, wrist-bound Reznor with a bag over his head through what looks like an industrial warehouse complex. He is then strapped into a large rotary harness where she spins him throughout the remainder of the video. These scenes are intercut with two young gay lovers, a man and woman wearing ritualistic dressings and dancing, as well as visuals of pierced genitalia (both male and female), all reflecting the song's dark, sexual aspects.

The video was banned from MTV and most major outlets. A partial version of the video can be found on Closure. There were reports that the complete video was shown at dance clubs in the early 1990s and can now be found on the Internet.

Lyrics
You give me the reason
You give me control
I gave you my Purity
My Purity you stole
Did you think I wouldn't recognize this compromise?
Am I just too stupid to realize?
Stale incense, old sweat and lies, lies, lies

It comes down to this
Your kiss
Your fist
And your strain
It gets under my skin
Within
Take in
The extent of my sin

You give me the anger
You give me the nerve
Carry out my sentence
I get what I deserve
I'm just an effigy to be defaced
To be disgraced
Your need for me has been replaced
And if I can't have everything well then just give me a taste

It comes down to this
Your kiss
Your fist
And your strain
It gets under my skin
Within
Take in
The extent of my sin
