"Everything" is the seventh track on the 2013 release Hesitation Marks. On August 19, 2013, the track officially premiered via an NPR blog. "Everything", along with "Satellite", were both originally written and recorded for a forthcoming greatest hits package for Interscope Records, but instead provided inspiration towards a new album.

From an interview with The Sun, Trent Reznor said the following about the track:

"I was trying to make something that leapt out of the speakers in a very umfamiliar way. At first listen, it might seem to be in praise of life but it's supposed to come off as an arrogant, 'Fuck you. I've survived!' It also gets less triumphant and more reflective and melancholy towards the end."

Everything
This is the original album version. Opening with a simple drum loop, the first verse enters with poppy guitars and big vocal harmonies throughout. In contrast, the song's choruses are darker, with noisier guitars playing much less poppy progressions and with shouted vocals. Entering the coda, the song seems to restart exactly the way it begins, but without the vocal layering. Various distorted pads and guitars build the coda towards its climax and sudden ending.
Everything (Autolux Remix)
Exclusive to the Japanese import of Hesitation Marks.
Lyrics
I survived everything
I have tried everything
Everything
And anything

All the walls begin to dissolve away
Feel your hands begin to shake
And just who you think you used to be
All begins to bend and break

Wave goodbye
Wish me well
I've become something else
Something else
(Just as well, really)

But this thing that lives inside of me
Will surely rise and wake
And his seed that bleeds right through to me
As it comes to grab and take

I am home
I believe
I am home
I am free
I am home
I can see
Always here
Finally

"Find My Way" is the fourth track on the 2013 release Hesitation Marks. It was the third song from the album to be made public, performed live on the first night of the Nine Inch Nails Live 2013 tour.
*Trent Reznor: Vocals, Electronics, Percussion, Bass, Guitar

Find My Way
This is the original album version. Downtempo, atmospheric and contemplative, the song prominently features a beat loop that is constantly augmented with echoes throughout, reminiscent of trip hop beat programming. The verse vocal melody closely resembles and recalls that of "Somewhat Damaged," while the chorus vocals remain wordless, backed by a simple high-register piano melody. The section following the second chorus seems to feature female vocals backing Reznor's wordless melodies. The coda of the track, featuring 'swarm' guitar atop the bassline and piano from the chorus, includes lyrics alluding to those from the coda of "I Do Not Want This."
Find My Way (Oneohtrix Point Never Remix)
This version is included on the deluxe version of Hesitation Marks. It strips away the original instrumentation and prominently features church organ and other keyboard textures with the original vocals.
Live
This song debuted live on the first night of the Nine Inch Nails Live 2013 tour.
Lyrics
Lord my path has gone astray
I'm just trying to find my way
Wandered here from far away
I'm just trying to find my way
You were never meant to see
All those things inside of me
Now that you have gone away
I'm just trying to find my way

I have made a great mistake
Pray the Lord my soul to take
The ghosts of who I used to be
I can feel them come for me
It looks as though they're here to stay
I'm just trying to find my way

Please
I never meant to
I never meant for this

I have been to every place
I have been to everywhere
I'm just trying to find my way
Oh dear Lord hear my prayer
Disappointed
This is the only known version. Its prominent beat loop features frequent hand claps; after it begins the track, the synth bassline joins, and Reznor's long, held verse vocals are distant and muffled in the background. They become louder as the chorus 'swarm' guitars enter. The second half of the track after a second, clearer chorus is a lengthy denouement of ambience and distant guitars with the beat loop and bassline, with layers of wordless vocals behind.
Live
This song debuted live on the second night of the Nine Inch Nails Live 2013 tour.
Lyrics
If I were you
I wouldn't trust
A single word
I say
Think by now
You should know
Nothing's going
To change

Can I ask you something?
What did you expect?
So disappointed
With what you get
Do you ever want to
Just get out of here?
Disappointed
Disappear

Look at you
Superman
With all the world
To save
You think by now
You'd figure out
That's nothing's going
To change
(And I am part of the reason)

Can I ask you something?
What did you expect?
So disappointed
With what you get
Do you ever want to
Just get out of here?
Disappointed
Disappear

The following lines are present in the lyrics booklet for Hesitation Marks at the end of the first verse, but are not sung.

All of this
Theater
I wouldn't waste
Comes a day
You figure out
You never had
While I'm Still Here
This is the original album version. A simplistic track, it is dominated by its quirky beat and staccato plucked string instruments. A busy bassline joins the ascending vocals in the verses, while the nearly spoken choruses are backed by a droning synth. After the second chorus, a sort of coda or bridge featuring a more complicated bassline and staccato baritone saxophone leads directly into "Black Noise."
Lyrics
Only thing I've ever done
Ticking time is running out
Closes I have ever come
Ticking time is running out
Oh so tired on my own
Ticking time is running out
Best day I have ever known
Ticking time is running out

Yesterday, I found out the world was ending

A little more
Ever day
Falls apart
Slips away
Well I don't mind
I'm okay
Wish it didn't have to end this way

These four walls are closing in
Ticking time is running out
Oh all the things that might have been
Ticking time is running out
Watch young lovers walking by
Ticking time is running out
God forgive me if I cry
Ticking time is running out

A little more
Ever day
Falls apart
Slips away
I don't mind
I'm okay
Nothing ever
Stays the same
While we can
Remember when
We always were
Yes, even then
Stay with me
Hold me near
While I'm still here

This is the only known version. Beginning with quiet synth layers, the verses open with busy drum loops and repetitive bass with manipulated vocals. These are broken up by layers of high-pitched vocals backed by piano between the first two verses, which later become the prominent features of the chorus, though augmented by a big, simple beat. The song then cuts to a quiet buildup reminiscent of dynamic bridges in songs like "Mr. Self Destruct" and "With Teeth," led by a bassline of 8th notes, atmosphere layers, distant vocals and guitar. They explode into a return to the chorus beat, deep bass and rhinocerous-esque 'swarm' guitar soloing, all of which end the song suddenly and lead directly into "While I'm Still Here."
I Would For You
This is the only known version. A beat loop characterised by quick double kicks opens this track, with deep bass and quiet vocals creating the first verse. Choruses open up with a simpler, clearer drum loop, a different bassline, and strange guitar layering that acts like a strings keyboard patch, creating a large stage for Reznor's loud and echoing vocals. The second chorus is followed by a new distorted guitar riff, which repeats as synth and percussion layers build; these eventually give way to a solitary piano melody, which quietly segues into "In Two" in a method recalling "Lights in the Sky" becoming "Corona Radiata" on The Slip.
Lyrics
What a pathetic string of words
Just leave them lying on the floor
The warning posted on the door
Not over here not anymore
There was a place that could have been
Step over all that used to be
Since you've invited yourself in
Some things I'd rather you not see

See I keep lying to myself
Don't know what else there is to do
If I could be somebody else
Well, I think I would for you

Didn't seem like something more?
So long I can't remember when
And this has happened all before
And this will happen all again
And I only have myself to blame
And I only have myself to blame

See I keep lying to myself
Don't know what else there is to do
If I could be somebody else
Well, I think I would for you
This is the only known version. Another track featuring much percussion layering, the busy beatloops back long, drawn-out vocal notes in the verses, with quicker whispers forming a pre-chorus that bounces from ear to ear and recalls a similar vocal approach in "Ruiner." The minimalist chorus retains the percussion layers but is differentiated by a smooth lead vocal and backing, harmonized "ooh" vocals. A bouncing guitar riff follows each chorus. The approach of rhythms and the subdued instrumentation and vocals atop recall the How To Destroy Angels track "The Believers."
This is the only known version. It begins with its bassline and some atmosphere layering, soon joined by a beat which also refines the bassline into muted chunks. Distant and manipulated vocals sing the verses below these, while prominent guitar and louder vocals with many high notes create the choruses. They also feature backing vocal harmony layering reminiscent of "Every Day is Exactly the Same." Its second chorus suddenly gives way to a quiet bridge of bass and piano with muted percussion layers, building with distant and whispering vocals. These usher in a return to the chorus but with 'swarm' guitar layers and a more realistic-sounding, tom-led drum beat. After two repetitions of the chorus, the instrumentation ends, allowing the vocal echoes to fade away alone.
Lyrics
Hallucinate in high fidelity
Little pieces of a plan
Construction of the highest quality
Built from my own hand
A line of lyric looping in my head
Nobody listening
I guess it really doesn't matter anymore
I guess it doesn't mean a thing

I've got to let it go
I've got to get straight
Why'd you have to make it so hard?
Let me get away

An effigy so wondrous to behold
A statement so profound
A place to bury every thing I did
And burn it to the ground
The fire illuminates our final scene
The past repeats itself
I can not tell the difference anymore
I can not trust myself
I've got to let it go
Why'd you have to make it so hard?
This is the only known version. Opening into the first verse, quiet, low-register vocals layer behind a danceable beat loop surrounded by atmospheric synthesizers. Echoing distorted guitars break up parts of the multiple verses, then cover the background of the track during the chorus, which is mostly built on the differing lyrics and vocal layering. The coda of the track augments these elements with jangling guitar reminiscent of The Fragile and, prominently, a bassline backed by 'swarm' guitar layering that changes the mood of the track into something more mysterious and sinister. As layers build, the song gives out to several of the ambient layers and vocals only, fading out all the way.

All begins to bend and break

Wave goodbye
Wish me well
I've become something else
Something else
(Just as well, really)

But this thing that lives inside of me
Will surely rise and wake
And his seed that blends right through to me
As it comes to grab and take
This is the only known version.
This is the original album version. Following an extended ambient introduction, the main body of the song is introduced, with a dance beat loop surrounded by jangling guitars unique to this track. It later features descending, echoing synth melodies also rarely used in NIN tracks. The verse vocals recall the delivery used atop the similarly-danceable electronics of "Vessel."

All Time Low (Todd Rundgren Remix)
This version is included on the deluxe version of Hesitation Marks. It largely drops the guitar layers and instead features new, complex drumming patterns, and it prominently highlights the unique vocal layering present in the original.
Lyrics
Go
Well this particular scenario
Looks like another all time ow
And we will live forever baby
And stretch across the sky
I will follow right behind you baby
We are never gonna die

Hey
Everything is not okay
We lost too much along the way
The passengers arrived today
It looks as though they're here to stay
This paranoid turns to fear
Just who was whispering in your ear?
Pretending but I know you hear
(Just how'd we fucking end up here?)
So give me just a little baby
Just something to get by
Downtempo, atmospheric and contemplative, the song prominently features a beat loop that is constantly augmented with echoes throughout, reminiscent of trip hop beat programming.
Lyrics
Lord my path has gone astray
I'm just trying to find my way
Wandered here from far away
I'm just trying to find my way
You were never meant to see
All those things inside of me
Now that you have gone away
I'm just trying to find my way

I have made a great mistake
Pray the Lord my should to take
The ghosts of who I used to be
I can feel them come for me
It looks as though they're here to stay
I'm just trying to find my way

Please
I never meant to
I never meant for this

I have been to every place
I have been to everywhere
I'm just trying to find my way
Oh dear Lord hear my prayer
This is the original album version. It begins uniquely with a lone, quiet vocal singing "hau-hau-haunted" as in the chorus. The song then opens proper with the main drum loop, soon joined by a bizarre bassline to begin the first verse. Noise and guitar layers enter for the choruses, while percussion layers augment each verse.
Music Videos
The "Came Back Haunted" video was directed by David Lynch and was released on June 28, 2013. It uses a shortened version of the song that is exclusive to the video.

The video has been flagged as potentially seizure-inducing for viewers with photosensitive epilepsy, due to its use of strobe effects. It features herky-jerky shots of Trent Reznor, wearing pancake makeup and lipstick, interspersed with other bizarre images. These typically Lynchian visuals include an image of a tick overlaid onto an image of a young ballerina, a seemingly disembodied and vaguely humanoid face reminiscent of something out of Lynch's Eraserhead, a trio of glowing zoomed-in images of mouths sitting atop little dancing bodies, and an expanding cloud of dark gray smoke in the corner of a dark room.

The fully-produced video was preceded by an audio video that was released by Vevo on June 6, 2013. It features a reel-to-reel tape deck playing the song, filmed from multiple angles. It was listed as "Came Back Haunted (Audio)". It was made for the purpose of providing internet video outlets with an official source of the audio.
Lyrics
The throat is deep and the mouth is wide
Saw some things on the other side
Made me promise to never tell
You know me I can't help myself, no
Now I got something you have to see
They put something inside of me
It's smile is red and it's eyes are black
I don't think I'll be coming back

I don't believe and I
I had to see
Came back haunted
Came back haunted
I said goodbye and I
I had to try and I
Came back haunted
Came back haunted

Everywhere now reminding me
I am not who I used to be
I'm afraid this has just begun
Consequences for what I've done

I don't believe and I
I had to see
Came back haunted
Came back haunted
I said goodbye and I
I had to try and I
Came back haunted
Came back haunted
You tried to tell me but I
I couldn't stop myself now I
Came back haunted
Came back haunted

Just can't stop
Came back haunted
This is the only known version. Opening with a wavering synth line, a simple drum loop sweeps in the first verse. Various percussion loops complicate the arrangement throughout, layering and falling away as the song structure changes parts. Prominent use of vocal looping personifies the title of the track, with the repeating words in the lyrics restarting in time with the song. The chorus is marked by a mellow organ pad.
Lyrics
I am just a copy of a copy of a copy
Everything I say has come before
Assembled into something into something into something
I don't know for certain anymore
I am just a shadow of a shadow of a shadow
Always trying to catch up with myself
I am just an echo of an echo of an echo
Listening to someone's cry for help

Look what you had to start
Why all the change of heart?
You need to play your part
A copy of a copy of a
Now look what you've gone and done
Well that doesn't sound like fun
See I'm not the only one
Copy of a copy of a

I am little pieces little piece little pieces
Pieces that we picked up on the way
Imprinted with a purpose with a purpose with a purpose
A purpose that's become quite clear today

I am just a finger on a trigger on a finger
Doing everything I'm told to do
Always my intention my intention your attention
Doing everything you tell me to
Hesitation Marks (also known as Halo 28) is the ninth studio album from Nine Inch Nails. It will be released on September 3, 2013. There will be a standard edition, a deluxe edition and a vinyl edition. The deluxe edition will include an additional CD with 3 remixes, plus a 28 page hardcover book.

The album was first acknowledged by Trent Reznor on May 28, 2013 in a post on nin.com:

"I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately. For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great. This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again. My forays into film, HTDA and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go!”

— Trent Reznor, 5.28.13.

It was then officially announced via Twitter on June 5, 2013, the day before the release of its first single, "Came Back Haunted." Nine Inch Nails signed with Columbia Records in 2013, making this the first album on a major label since Year Zero. The album also marks a return to the artwork of Russell Mills, whose work was previously used for The Downward Spiral and its accompanying singles, as well as Further Down The Spiral and Closure.

This is the final album version. Opening with a thumping beat and a synth melody, Reznor's reverberating vocals come dominate the verses. A different beat is introduced during the second verse, while vocal harmonies and a synth pad enter during the choruses. During the break, there is a short distorted guitar riff before the final verse and choruses. The end of the track comes in after the final chorus with a funky guitar riff playing over a panned drum beat. This is followed by a scream sampled from the beginning of Jane's Addiction's "Had a Dad," which leads into an entirely different beat, accompanied by a synth that sounds very similar to the one used in "That's What I Get" and vinyl scratching.
Lyrics
Well you've got me working so hard lately
Working my hands until they bleed
If I was twice the man I could be
I'd still be half of what you need
Still you lead me and I follow
All of your back up to your chin
Over to the tip of your switchblade
As you pull it out as you stick it in

(Twist twist twist) it can go a little deeper
(Twist twist twist) I'm wearing these chains
(Twist twist twist) you make it hurt real good
(Twist twist twist) I love the pain

Well you just leave me nailed here
Hanging like Jesus from this cross
I'm just dying for your sin
And aiding to the cause

(Twist twist twist) it can go a little deeper
(Twist twist twist) I'm wearing these chains
(Twist twist twist) you make it hurt real good
(Twist twist twist) I love the pain

Wrap my soul in bandages
I'm tired of this war
Go ahead and cut me
I can't feel it anymore

(Twist twist twist) it can go a little deeper
(Twist twist twist) I'm wearing these chains
(Twist twist twist) you make it hurt real good
(Twist twist twist) I love the pain
Live
Very similar in structure to the studio version, the live version adds only a few changes. The song acquires a harder, darker sound, with the drums becoming more prominent and a more noticeable guitar riff added from the second verse onwards. It was played often on the Pretty Hate Machine, Hate, Sin and 1991 Lollapalooza Tours, but has not been played since.
The demo version of this song was called "Twist," composing of the same basic music but different lyrics and a slightly more victimizing subject matter.
This is the final album version. Opening with a thumping beat and a synth melody, Reznor's reverberating vocals come dominate the verses. A different beat is introduced during the second verse, while vocal harmonies and a synth pad enter during the choruses. During the break, there is a short distorted guitar riff before the final verse and choruses. The end of the track comes in after the final chorus with a funky guitar riff playing over a panned drum beat. This is followed by a scream sampled from the beginning of Jane's Addiction's "Had a Dad," which leads into an entirely different beat, accompanied by a synth that sounds very similar to the one used in "That's What I Get" and vinyl scratching.
Lyrics
Well you've got me working so hard lately
Working my hands until they bleed
If I was twice the man I could be
I'd still be half of what you need
Still you lead me and I follow
All of your back up to your chin
Over to the tip of your switchblade
As you pull it out as you stick it in

(Twist twist twist) it can go a little deeper
(Twist twist twist) I'm wearing these chains
(Twist twist twist) you make it hurt real good
(Twist twist twist) I love the pain

Well you just leave me nailed here
Hanging like Jesus from this cross
I'm just dying for your sin
And aiding to the cause

(Twist twist twist) it can go a little deeper
(Twist twist twist) I'm wearing these chains
(Twist twist twist) you make it hurt real good
(Twist twist twist) I love the pain

Wrap my soul in bandages
I'm tired of this war
Go ahead and cut me
I can't feel it anymore
Live
Very similar in structure to the studio version, the live version adds only a few changes. The song acquires a harder, darker sound, with the drums becoming more prominent and a more noticeable guitar riff added from the second verse onwards. It was played often on the Pretty Hate Machine, Hate, and Sin tours, but was dropped from the 1991 Lollapalooza Tour onward and has not been played since.

The Fragile (also known as Halo 14), released on September 21, 1999, is the fourth studio album by Nine Inch Nails.

The album features a rich array of electronic beats, ambient noise, and heavy guitar. While it received critical acclaim from many, it did not receive the commercial success that its predecessor, The Downward Spiral, did (attributed variously to the difference in musical climate, and insufficient promotion by Interscope Records).

Before the release of this full-length, the single "The Day The World Went Away" was released; following The Fragile's release, "We're In This Together" was released. A remix CD featuring several songs from The Fragile was released as Things Falling Apart.

The Fragility 2.0 tour was filmed and released as "And All That Could Have Been" on DVD and VHS. It was also released as a CD which was eventually combined with an extension called Still.
10th anniversary Reissue
In a Question and Answer session with NIN fans, Reznor hinted at the reissue of The Fragile for early 2010, a statement repeated via the official twitter account, calling it an "Ultimate reissue".
Trent Reznor on The Fragile
Reznor described The Fragile in a 1999 interview:

"There's a general theme to the album of systems failing and things sort of falling apart. In keeping with the idea of making everything sound a little broken, I chose stringed instruments because they're imperfect by nature. Although it may not sound like it, most of the album is actually guitar - and that includes the orchestral sounds and weird melodic lines. When it came to instruments that I didn't really know how to play - like the ukulele or the slide guitar - we were able to get some really interesting sounds by making the studio the main instrument."

In terms of narrative, the album is an unofficial continuation of The Downward Spiral. Reznor compares the lyrical content of the two albums:

"I wanted this album to sound like there was something inherently flawed in the situation, like someone struggling to put the pieces together. Downward Spiral was about peeling off layers and arriving at a naked, ugly end. This album starts at the end, then attempts to create order from chaos, but never reaches the goal. It’s probably a bleaker album because it arrives back where it starts—[with] the same emotion.” The album begins “Somewhat Damaged” and ends “Ripe [With Decay].”
Differences to the CD version
Many of the tracks on the vinyl release differ from the CD equivalent:

* "The Day the World Went Away" has a longer guitar intro
* "The Wretched" has an extended outro
* "Even Deeper" features an elongated middle section
* "La Mer" has a longer intro and an extended ending with more speech samples
* "Pilgrimage" does not fade in, but rather begins building without any volume adjusting
* "The Mark Has Been Made" does not feature the introduction of "10 Miles High" fading in at the end (the hidden bit of music in the pre-gap of "Please" on the CD version)
* "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" features an extra bar of strings and an extra bar of percussion before the lyrics
* "Ripe" does not include the "With Decay" ending section, but rather fades out as the slinking guitars play the main riff
* "The Wretched," "We're in This Together," "Even Deeper," "Pilgrimage," "The Mark Has Been Made," "10 Miles High," "The New Flesh," and "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" all do not crossfade as on the CD version, because these songs either end or begin their respective sides
}}"Down In It" was the first single for the 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine and the third track on the disc. It has been stated by Trent Reznor that this song is the first he ever wrote and is a rare treat to hear live. Following the "Down In It" single release, a music video was made.

Inspiration
In a 1994 radio broadcast biography of Reznor, it was said that "Down In It" was inspired by a relationship that had then recently ended for him with a woman named Krissy.

Reznor has openly admitted that this song "was a total rip-off of 'Dig It' by Skinny Puppy."
Versions
Down In It
Appears on Purest Feeling as the last track, differing from its official counterparts as that it has an extended intro with strange screams and odd static. It also includes about 1 minute and 8 seconds of distorted clippings of the song at the end as a finish to the album. Musically it's extremely close to the "(Demo)" version from the Head Like a Hole US single.

The version that appears on Pretty Hate Machine is in fact the "Skin" remix, but it is not listed as such on the album.

Down In It (Demo)
Appears on Head Like a Hole (US) as the last track, running 3:52. This demo is the same as the Purest Feeling version, except that it lacks the long intro and all the extra layering, as well as the distorted outro.

Song Credits
*Writing, performance, production, mixing: Trent Reznor

(Demo II)
Appears on the Demos and Remixes bootleg. It's simply the Skin version from Pretty Hate Machine with an unadulterated version of the "Terrible Lie" intro tacked onto the end which fades out.

(Demo III)
Appears on the Demos and Remixes bootleg, running 4:19. Almost exactly the same as the Purest Feeling version, simply lacking the extra layering and sound effects as well as the distorted outro, though it does retain the extended drumbeat intro and is probably the version the Purest Feeling version was based upon.

(Demo IV)
Appears on the Demos and Remixes bootleg, running 4:09. It's an odd version with Reznor whispering a good portion of his vocals under an odd beat. It also includes faux-Oriental sounding synths which are noticeably absent in any of the other versions of the song. This is often referred to as the Big Whole Mix.

Down In It (Skin)
This version originally appeared on the Down In It single, and would become the version that appears on Pretty Hate Machine. In chronological order, this is the first Nine Inch Nails song ever released to the general public.

Song Credits
*Reproduced and remixed by Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc

Down In It (Shred)
A mix that appears on both the Down In It and Head Like a Hole singles, running 7:00. It's basically retains the original song with an extended intro and a long instrumental area that makes up the entire latter half of the song.

Song Credits
*Reproduced and remixed by Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc

Down In It (Singe)
A mix that appears on both the Down In It and Head Like a Hole singles, running 7:21 on the latter. It's a mostly instrumental "dub" mix of the song with minimal vocals and strange warping and mixing of the beats with heavy bass emphasis. It should be noted that this mix is actually 18 seconds longer on the Head Like A Hole (US) single than it was on the Down In It single. The reason for this is unknown, though it's probably due to the time constraints imposed on Vinyl singles compared to a full sized LP Maxi Single.

Down In It (Closure)
This is a live version found on the Closure home video. It was filmed on the Self-Destruct Tour between 1994 and 1996 and cut to include different footage and accompanying audio from different performances.

Live
As of Fragility 2.0, Reznor had stated that he didn't like the song as much as he used to, but during the later legs of the Live: With Teeth tour, it seemed as if he's changed his mind about the song, playing it more as the tour progressed. The song usually features a lot of destruction from Reznor towards the end.

Music Video
"Down In It" was the first Nine Inch Nails video. It was directed by Eric Zimmerman and Benjamin Stokes, who also directed "Head Like A Hole." The video depicts Reznor running through downtown Chicago and climbing to the roof of a building, where he falls to his death. Bandmates Richard Patrick and Chris Vrenna discover the body days later.

This was the first video to be met with controversy. To film the shots of lifeless Reznor, he was covered with cornstarch to create the illusion of decay and cameras were tied to heavy-duty balloons that were tied down. During the filming of these scenes, one of the balloons broke free and took the camera with it, drifting some 200 miles before being found by a farmer in Michigan. The camera was turned over to local police who, upon seeing the raw video footage, assumed it was a snuff film and the FBI was called in to investigate. The incident was even reported on Hard Copy and recalled in an interview for SPIN magazine. Because MTV and its US affiliates were uncomfortable with the video's subject matter, all scenes that depict Reznor's body lying on the ground behind the building were deleted.

Lyrics
Kinda like a cloud I was up way up in the sky and I was feeling some feelings you wouldn't believe
Sometimes I can't believe them myself and I decided I was never coming down
Just then a tiny little dot caught my eye it was just about too small to see
But I watched it way too long and that dot was pulling me down

I was up above it
Now I'm down in it

Well shut up so what what does it matter now
I was swimming in the haze now I crawl on the ground
And everything I never liked about you is kind of seeping into me
Try to laugh about it now but isn't it funny how everything works out
("I guess the joke's on me," she said)

I was up above it
Now I'm down in it

I used to be so big and strong
I used to know my right from wrong
I used to never be afraid
I used to be somebody
I used to have something inside
Now just this hole that's open wide
I used to want it all
I used to be somebody

I'll cross my heart and hope to die but the needle's already in my eye
And all the world's weight is on my back and I don't even know why
And what I used to think was me is just a fading memory
I looked him right in the eye and said "goodbye"

I was up above it
Now I'm down in it

Backing vocals in Pretty Hate Machine version:

Rain rain go away, come again another day.

During the last shows of the Wave Goodbye Tour, the last line of the third verse was changed to:

I looked him right in the eye and waved goodbye
}}"Physical" is a hidden track on 1992's Broken EP that was originally written and performed by Adam and the Ants on their 1980 album Kings of the Wild Frontier.

When Broken was first released, this and another extra track, "Suck," were on a Mini CD that was packaged with the EP. But after allegations that some music stores were removing the mini CD and selling it separately, the two tracks were incorporated onto the EP as tracks 98 and 99, with tracks 7–97 consisting of one second of silence each.

At the beginning (approx. 27 sec.) of the song, Trent Reznor can be heard saying, "Eat your heart out, Steve." This is possibly directed towards Steve Gottlieb of TVT Records with whom Reznor had been feuding, as Gottlieb would not let him out of his contract. The entirety of Broken was created without the knowledge of TVT.

In the credits, "Barks and Roars" are attributed to Maise, Trent's dog at the time of recording. At 3:36, barking and "Ow! Fucker" is heard being played at half speed over the track, as Maise - then a puppy - was playing with someone in the studio, and bit that someone. (One of the recording techniques employed on both Suck and Physical was to play the guitar riff at double the speed of the track, and play the resulting recording back at half speed, for a unique, extra thick sound)

According to a previously unreleased interview Reznor did with Melody Maker magazine, "Physical" was supposed to be a "tongue-in-cheek" cover.

It should be noted that the Adam and the Ants version is named "Physical (You're So)" and features an extra verse.
This is the original version found on the Broken EP. It begins with layers of ambience and feedback before erupting into a guitar- and drum-heavy first verse. The chorus introduces a new, chugging chord progression before returning to the power chords and riff of the second verse. A bridge after the second chorus leads to the climactic final chorus variation, which descends into more feedback and whispering.

Live
This track was rarely played live post-1993, but resurfaced on the Wave Goodbye Tour.
Lyrics
I want to date you maybe
I want to take you out
I want to wine and dine you
I want to twist and twist and shout
I want you hard in my arms
So soft on my bed
You get the keys to my heart
When you wear that sweet dress
(You know, the short one)

You're so physical, physical for me
You're just too physical, physical, for me

I want your roughhouse baby
I want this night in your ear
Let me feel you danger
I want to make this feeling clear
I want the touch of your charms
The heat of your breath
I want to say all those things
(Those dirty things)
That would be better unsaid
}}
"Corona Radiata" is the eighth track on the Nine Inch Nails album The Slip. It is an instrumental track at 55 BPM, and at 7:34 is the longest on the album. It is also the longest studio song by NIN (the second is "Memorabilia").

Corona Radiata are several protective layers surrounding ova or unfertilized egg cells, responsible with supplying the ova or egg cell with protein. The artwork for the song most probably represents an egg cell with the distinct corona radiata surrounding it. This might be a lead in to some sort of impregnation with the Demon Seed, perhaps implied by the red line. Another explanation for both the title and the image can be derived from the literal translation of "Corona Radiata", which is "Radiant Crown". Traditionally a crown of light is symbolic of many things including glory, enlightenment and deification, in regards to this track it is easily interpreted as being a halo (the track art being a broken halo) thus reflecting a fall from grace. The theme of light also ties well with both The Presence and the previous track Lights In The Sky. Corona Radiata is also the bundle of white matter in the brain that is a pathway for information traveling to and from the cerebral cortex, where the brain processes one's conscious mind.

Curiously, the track overlaps from "Lights In The Sky" and shares its tempo, but whether the tracks are somehow related is possible but unknown.
This is the original album version. The song begins with a calm and serene layering of synthesizer pads, fading in over the end of "Lights in the Sky." In the second half, drums and other effects creep in. Finally, screams from an infant and other effects fade in quickly as the song suddenly stops.

Live
This song may have made its debut on the South American shows, with "The Greater Good" lyrics whispered over it as it transitions into the pre-recorded "Pinion" and then "Wish." Its synthesizer layers may also have been used to created a new, live introduction to "1,000,000" on the Australian dates of the Wave Goodbye Tour. A much shorter pre-recorded version of the song was played during the transition from "Gave Up" to the electronic/Year Zero centric portion of the set on the Lights in the Sky Tour.
Dissonance
2009-12-15T03:30:26Z

Minusthesnake:

In 1995, Nine Inch Nails co-headlined the Dissonance tour with David Bowie. Although NIN were supposedly more popular than Bowie at the time, Reznor felt uncomfortable having his idol open for him. So NIN played after the opening band Prick and before Bowie.

After NIN played a re-worked instrumental version of "Eraser", Bowie's band gradually came onto the stage to play 5 songs with NIN. Reznor and Bowie sang duet throughout this dual mini-set, with Reznor leaving the stage at the end for Bowie's band to perform their own set. NIN and Bowie's individual set lengths ended up being roughly equal. The joint set ended with new version of "Hurt", performed mostly by Bowie's band and sang by Bowie and Reznor. A live recording of this version appears on Closure.

The concept was innovative for its time, and received low sales and mixed reviews. Generalizing here, the young crowd did not stay for Bowie's set despite the segue, and the old crowd did not get industrial. Nowadays, these shows are treasured by the bootleg community.
Happiness In Slavery
This is the original album version. It is characterised by heavy use of loud, layered percussion loops; in fact, the bridge of the song is completely constructed from percussion patterns and synthesized machinery sounds as well as Reznor's distorted voice. Guitars are featured prominently during the verses and choruses, the latter also including synthesized bass. Each verse is punctured by screamed backing vocals. The repetitive buildup at the end of the song eventually gives way to quiet whispers, which segue into "Gave Up." The end of "Heresy" also cuts directly to the beginning of this song when they are played back to back.

Happiness In Slavery (Fixed)
This remix contains samples from the album version as well as from performance artist Bob Flanagan. Repetitive in nature, it contains very few lyrics, instead focusing on the percussion loops and synthesized bass and leads, similar in sound to "Heresy."
Song Credits
* Manipulation: Trent Reznor and Chris Vrenna with P.K.

Screaming Slave
This remix is very different from the album version and the other remix on Fixed, and also incorporates samples from Flanagan. It is cut up and spliced so that it seems more like a sound collage than music.
Song Credits
*Manipulation: Trent Reznor, Chris Vrenna, Bill Kennedy, Sean Beavan, Martin Brumbach & Bob Flanagan

Happiness In Slavery (Sherwood Slave Mix)
This remix has only minor changes with cut up vocals on top, and can only be found on the Happiness In Slavery halo.
*Remixed by Adrian Sherwood

Happiness In Slavery (PK Slavery Remix)
This remix was initially found only on the Happiness In Slavery promo, but has recently been posted to remix.nin.com by Reznor. Short in length, it loops only few elements of the original, incorporating new synthesizer elements and film samples on top.
*Remixed by Paul Kendall

Happiness in Slavery (Live at Woodstock '94)
A recording from the Woodstock '94 performance can be found on the official Woodstock '94 CD, including an introduction from comedian Calvert DeForest. At the end of the song, it fades out over the intro to "Head Like a Hole".

Music Video
Jon Reiss directed the award-winning "Happiness In Slavery" video, which was released in 1992. Shot entirely in black-and-white, the video's stark contrasts and stunning visual effects leave a memorable imprint to the viewer.

SPOILERS BEGIN

A man (played by Flanagan) enters a room. He's dressed in a suit and tie and surveys the room before placing a flower in a small vase on a shelf and lighting a candle next to it. He then undresses, carefully folding each piece and placing it on a table under the shelf. Now completely nude, he walks over to a small wash basin, above which is a mirror. He dips a washcloth into the water and cleans himself, then pauses and looks in the mirror. He then walks over to a strange device in the middle of the room and lies down on it.

Suddenly the device springs to life and the man is in a reclining position. Shackles come down over his wrists and ankles as needles start poking into his hands. He looks on with anticipation and reacts with both pain and pleasure. A clamp and pincer begins to pull at the man's genitalia. More pincers begin pulling at his skin and ripping it out, which seems to be bringing the man an increasing amount of pleasure. Drills emerge and drill into his flesh at various points, with the blood dripping to the floor. The floor seems to be made out of dirt and there is a strange little garden underneath the device that seems to be fertilized by blood.

Finally, grinders emerge and grind at the man's skin. There is a final flurry of pain and ecstasy before he is finally dead. The machine then engulfs the man's body, grinding it into a fertilizer for the garden. The machinery has washed itself and awaits the next victim.

At the end of the video, another man (Reznor), dressed in similar attire, enters the room, and begins the same ritual as the previous man.

SPOILERS END

The video was universally banned due to its extreme violence and full-frontal nudity. There is a rumor that the only part of the video that was not real was the final sequence in which the man is engulfed by the machine. In reality, the poking and pulling were pretty much the only "real" aspects to the video. Reiss is fascinated with hydraulics, and it clearly shows with this video. The blood and gore were created by mashing bananas and mixing them with chocolate. This would look more realistic when photographed in black-and-white.

Live
"Happiness in Slavery" was a set staple during the Self Destruct tour, and usually concluded with a lot of destruction by the band after an extended outro. It has not been played since 1995. However, during later dates on the Performance 2007 tour, samples from the song began to appear in the end of "The Great Destroyer."

Lyrics
Slave screams he thinks he knows what he wants
Slave screams thinks he has something to say
Slave screams he hears but doesn't want to listen
Slave screams he's being beat into submission

Don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
The devils of truth steal the souls of the free
Don't open your eyes, take it from me
I have found
You can find
Happiness in slavery

Slave screams he spends his life learning conformity
Slave screams he claims he has his own identity
Slave screams he's going to cause the system to fall
Slave screams but he's glad to be chained to that wall

Don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
The blind have been blessed with security
Don't open your eyes, take it from me
I have found
You can find
Happiness in slavery

I don't know what I am I don't know where I've been
Human junk just words and so much skin
Stick my hands through the cage of this endless routine
Just some flesh caught in this big broken machine

Extra lyrics are whispered at the end of the song:

Happiness
It controls you
Versions
Gave Up
This is the original album version. Fading in with an ambient pad, the quick drum loop soon enters, with Reznor's quiet and filtered vocals soon after. His singing builds in intensity until launching into the pre-chorus, which is considerably louder and guitar-centric, also featuring yelled vocals. The chorus continues this abrasion but with high-pitched vocal layering before dying down to a keyboard solo and the second verse. After another pre-chorus and chorus, it transitions into the bridge, which strips the layering down to percussion loops and guitar along with Reznor's repeated lyric, "I tried, but I gave up." This soon leads into a loud synthesizer solo and two repeats of the chorus, the song then descending into chaos and ending the album. Its first music video, included in the Broken Movie, uses this track.

Gave Up (Fixed)
This remix, done by Coil and Danny Hyde, appears on Fixed. Its most prominent feature may be the splicing and rearranging of vocal syllables. It is musically similar to jungle or drum 'n' bass music, focusing on layering the frantic drum loops and guitar riffs.

Gave Up (Closure)
A re-recorded version of the song appears as the soundtrack to the song's music video. A different vocal recording and repetition of the chorus riff by the guitars to end the song are perhaps its most notable features.

Gave Up (Live)
An otherwise unavailable live recording of this song from the Civic Arena, Omaha, NE (2/13/95) appears on the Alternative Press compilation Industrial Strength Machine Music: The Framework of Industrial Rock 1978-1995, released in 1999.

Gave Up (And All That Could Have Been)
This version does not open with the ambient pad and retains the guitar ending found in the music video version, but otherwise uses the album arrangement, indicative of most performances of the song.

Gave Up (Beside You In Time)
Just like the And All That Could Have Been version, the Beside You In Time is performed very closely to the album version. The only difference is the keyboard solo by Alessandro Cortini, which sounds different than Charlie Clouser's in the previous DVD (which was nearly identical to the album version).

Music Videos
There are two videos for "Gave Up": a performance video directed by Jon Reiss ("Happiness In Slavery"), and the finale to the Broken Movie, directed by Peter Christopherson.

The video directed by Reiss, as stated earlier, is a performance video. It features the band (Reznor, Richard Patrick, Chris Vrenna, and James Woolley) along with Marilyn Manson performing the song in a studio at the notorious Tate Mansion. Noticeable in the video is a message on a computer monitor that reads "FUCK YOU STEVE." Many consider this to be another jab at TVT Records owner Steve Gottlieb, with whom Reznor was feuding at the time over his contract and creative control. This video clip can be found in Closure.

The video directed by Christopherson is the finale to the Broken Movie. The victim is strung up to the ceiling where he is burned, mutilated, and beaten. He is then taken down and tied to a board, where the killer takes a chainsaw to the victim's appendages. The killer unmasks himself, revealing his identity in the victim's final moments. After having his way with the dying victim, the killer cuts out the victim's heart and eats it. All the while, Reznor can be seen on the television singing the song. Intercut with the violence is footage of various body parts in freezers and the fridge, a police officer (played by either Richard or Robert Patrick) coming into the crime scene, and a crowd of rubbernecking bystanders.

Live
"Gave Up" has seen regular playing time in live shows since its debut in 1994. When performed live, the high pitched vocals in the choruses and the drum loop at the beginning are from the album version, played back in time with the rest of the band playing live.

Lyrics
Perfect little dream the kind that hurts the most
Forgot how it feels well almost
No one to blame always the same
Open my eyes wake up in flames

It took you to make me realize
It took you to make me realize
It took you to make me realize
It took you to make me see the light
Smashed up my sanity
Smashed up integrity
Smashed up what I believed in
Smashed up what's left of me
Smashed up my everything
Smashed up all that was true
Gonna smash myself to pieces
I don't know what else to do

Covered in hope and Vaseline
Still cannot fix this broken machine
Watching the hole it used to be mine
Just watching it burn in my steady systematic decline
Of the trust I will betray
Give it to me I throw it away
After everything I've done I hate myself for what I've become

I tried
I gave up
I don't know
Throw it away

Notes
*Before performing "Reptile," Trent Reznor addressed the audience:
"Back in Pennsylvania! My home state. I spent 18 years trying to get the fuck outta here. Here I am again. No, I was from the cool
side, the western side. No, I'm just kidding, it sucked to be there.

Thank you for coming out tonight, it's been fun here, ok. We appreciate your support. I'd like to take one second to introduce my band.
Which side should I start on tonight? This side, or that side? Justin Medal-Johnson, bass. Hiding behind the keyboard, Alessandro ...
hairstylist? Drums, Josh Freese. And Robin Fink.

I'd like to thank out opening act, Does It Offend You, Yeah?. Please, if you like them, go out and buy their album. You can steal
everything I put out. I don't care anymore.

I'm starting a very, a very bad trend of talking at shows, which I'll probably stop, probably after today. Someone asked me...you know,
we've been doing this for a while...Someone asked me, you know, when you look out at the audience, does it look the same as it did years
ago? And there's one difference that I've noticed. And that is uh...like I went and I saw Rage Against The Machine the other day at
uh...where was that?...at Lollapalooza and it was weird, we were on stage watching out and there was a million people and it looked great
and it kicked ass, but I noticed it was all dudes, all dudes, as far as you could see, just shirtless sweaty guys. And when we started
out it was all dudes, they were like vampire dudes, and it was all guys. Now a lot of, a lot of hot chicks come out. I don't know if
that's good or bad. They're blowing the mystique.

Let's go all dark in here, shall we? Let's kill the lights."

*In the middle of "Down In It" a fan managed to get onstage. He kneeled down before Reznor for a moment then ran off right before several security guards tackled/escorted him off the stage. Reznor looks on while performing the rest of the song.

Nine Inch Nails played at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA on August 29th. Does It Offend You, Yeah? were the opening act.
