On the NIN Wiki, we generally follow the Wikipedia Manual of Style. When in doubt, please consult that manual for guidance. See also the wp:Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Music.

The guidelines posted here serve to highlight formatting that been particularly problematic on this wiki, or the rare guidelines where we diverge from the Wikipedia style.

Article titles

Capitalization (article titles)

Capitalization of article titles should generally follow sentence case. [1] Essentially, only the first word is capitalized, except for proper names. If you are unsure how to use sentence case, paste your title into here and choose "Sentence case".

If the article title is the title of a work, then see #Capitalization (titles of works)

Naming convention (article titles)

Articles on works of art should be titled by the work’s common names. [2] Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's official name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used. [3] For most soundtracks, subtitles like (Original Score) would not be used in the article title (common name). However, there are some subtitles where it would be necessary, like Dispatches from Elsewhere (Music from the Elsewhere Society) and Shōgun (Vol. 2).

Titles of works

See wp:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles of works

Capitalization (titles of works)

Capitalization of titles of works should follow title case. Note, the rules for title case can vary slightly from manual to manual. We will use Wikipedia's title case standard. [4] If you are unsure how to use title case, paste your title into here and choose "Title case".

Albums and EPs

Album and EP titles should be italicized, like Pretty Hate Machine. Of particular note for soundtrack albums which often have a subtitle, when writing the full album name in the article body, you can use the punctuation as it appears on the release itself, or, in the absence of any clear subtitle demarcation, enclose the subtitle in parentheses. For example, for The Gorge, the full title with subtitle would be The Gorge (Soundtrack From the Apple Original Film).

Songs and singles

Song titles and singles, as minor works, should be enclosed in double quotation marks. [5]

Films

Film titles, including short films, should be italicized.
