It was both announced and digitally released as a free download on March 26, 2020, during the ''#STAYHOME'' initiative in the wake of the [[wikiwp:COVID-19pandemic|COVID-19pandemic]] isolation due to viral outbreak worldwide. It was released simultaneously with ''Ghosts''' second installment, ''[[Ghosts V: Together]]''.

The album was released alongside ''Ghosts V'', making it and ''Ghosts V'' the only NIN releases to date to be put out simultaneously. It was released unannounced, with via a message from [[Trent Reznor]] and [[Atticus Ross]] on the [[nin.com]] website:

==''Ghosts I-IV'' comparison==The music of ''[[ImageGhosts I-IV]]'' bears little resemblance to ''Ghosts VI:Ghostsvitracklisting.jpg|thumbLocusts'', which is highly reminiscent of [[Soundtracks|Official Tracklisting artworkscore work]]by Reznor and Ross. This The naming convention for this release differs from its predecessor, in that ''[[Ghosts I-IV]]'' has no title for any of the four parts, nor do any of the track names have a title (simply carrying the track number to signify which track is which). The typeface used on ''Ghosts I-IV'', Eureka Sans Caps Light, is also used on this album and ''Ghosts V: Together''.
