The narrator has begun a drastic change in :Trent Reznor: There was one point of view. He experiences a moment of clarity to truly consider his situation in a way unhindered by intoxicantswhen we were doing the record that I came up with this melody and I thought, or perhaps enhanced by them. Backed by the melancholy piano tune"this is really good, he realizes who he has become " and what he has donethat I couldn't have written it myself. He had known subconsciously before, and he had voiced the varying attributes (the title of "So I played it for [[The BecomingFlood]]" being the most obvious example), but he had not yet come to grips with the real consequences of his character and actions, which differ from the extreme views he had expressed previously. "Warmsaid " contrasts with the coldthat's really good, indifferent quality of machines, which are sampled throughout the album. This "warm placeand I said " relates to the womb or to the rise in body temperature during intercourse, where life beginsthat's gotta be somebody else's song."

With the breathing straw sounds at the end of "A Warm Place," it segues into the next song, "[[Eraser]]," which begins as an instrumental. The straw sounds possess a sort of nasty texture, designating a change in tone. The heavy percussion beats permeate throughout: this is the rhythm required by his train of thought. As more sound layers are added, the narrator becomes increasingly disturbed by what he had realized in "A Warm Place". He begins an inner-battle on the only consequences that matter nowDavid Bowie: what he should do next. He denies certain arguments and favours others, evident by the periodic addition of more layers of mocking guitars. Briefly, the instrumental calms down It's from a bit, and he lists the obvious gin advert I did in minimalistic terms ("[''verb''] me... [''verb''] you"). At the end, he has chosen a strongly desire for an end to the dilemma ("kill me"). A remix of "Eraser" being called "Eraser (denial; realization)" could be evidence of this.Japan!

'''''Running Time: 3:14''''' This is the original version of the song, but features new vocals and lyrics by Stella Katsoudas (aka [[wp:Stella Soleil|Stella Soleil]]), the lead singer and main force behind Sister Soleil, added on top. The song track was put together in 1999 for uploaded by Reznor to remix.nin.com, where the description stated: "Reportedly scrapped from the soundtrack to for the film movie ''Stigmata'' but was not included, allegedly due Stella began giving this out to fans a quarrel between Reznor and Billy Corgan, who produced the soundtrack. Previously, the song had never been officially released, although Katsoudas has used it in some ballet performances, causing the track to subsequently surface on torrent websitesfew years ago. More recently, the track has been uploaded to [[remix.nin.com]] by Reznor and " It is currently available for downloadfrom the Sister Soleil Bandcamp profile. Its title means "touching him" in Latin. I wanted to do this because, I was a huge NIN fan, but most importantly because I wanted Trent to produce my record. John Malm told my manager at the time, "Trent Reznor will never work with Sister Soleil. Stella is too pop for him." I was devastated. When I signed with Universal Records, Trent's manager had come out to Chicago, invited especially so that Universal could try to convince him to re-consider. Again, I was told I was too 'pop' for Trent. I did something really stupid and risky then. I took the instrumental track of "a warm place" on the actual release of 'A Downward Spiral' and brought it to Chicago Trax Recording studios and dumped it into pro-tools. I had written lyrics and melody to it, and i just, really wanted to see if it would work. I didn't want anything to jeopardize the possibility of this working (for instance, if my lyrics really were "too pop"), so i broke the words up into a kind of code, pronouncing the wrong syllables, etc. I had been listening to a lot of Hildengard Von Bingen's "A Feather on the Breath of God". A lyric that had stuck with me, on that recording, was "illum tangendo' which is a very old form of Latin for the phrase "touching Him". Without permission, I recorded vocals on top of Trent's release. I didnt play it for anyone, until Bud Carr (the music supervisor for the Stigmata soundtrack) called me asking for submissions for the movie he was working on. I think I just wanted somebody to acknowledge that, working with Trent, could still happen (even though, everyone, was telling me to forget it. i could not forget it.) I submitted 5 tracks to Bud. Ofcourse, he called me enthusiastic about 1 track, "a warm place'. I got scared. I explained that I did not get permission to do this, it was only a kind of test for myself, it was stupid, etc....Bud insisted that he would get it to Trent and he would like it. I got a phone call about a week later, from John Malm saying that Trent wanted to speak to me. It did not sound good. I instantly regretted trying to go around him). About another week after that, Trent called me, and I remember spilling an entire gallon of milk on myself and the hardwood floors in my friend's apartment as I braced for what could have been, and rightfully so, a very bad response. He said "I'm usually an asshole about people trying to use my music, but I was pleasantly suprised when I heard this. Did you want to come to New Orleans to re-cut this?". I spent about 4 days at his studios. I met a really cool guy named "rave" that engineered this version. Trent produced it. I had a blast. I stayed at the famous Pontchatrain Hotel, which sadly, I think, was washed away with Katrina. I cried when I left, but not until I was out of sight. It was a kind of victory and a dream, all rolled into one. A couple years ago, someone told me that he posted it onto his remix site on nin.com. Now that was the coolest thing ever. "A Warm Place" made its live debut on [[2009/08/23 New York, NY|August 23, 2009]], at Webster Hall in New York City. Much of the song's live incarnation consists of pre-recorded samples, such as the constant tremolo guitar that runs throughout, while the band members man keyboards to recreate some of the other melodies. The song was also performed at the Hollywood Palladium almost ten nine days later on [[2009/09/02 Los Angeles, CA|September 2, 2009]]. The song was performed in a special remixed version during the [[Tension 2013 Tour]]. [[Alessandro Cortini]] confirmed the unnamed live remix on twitter. More soft and synthetic, it was played with nobody on stage except sometimes Cortini.

A barely audible message is heard layered under the track in the very beginning of the song (repeating approximately 6 times.): The words were long rumored to be "the best thing about life Is is knowing you put it together" but this has been resigned to little more than an urban legend.
