The song bears some resemblance to "Crystal Japan" by David Bowie and "Tanz Der China Dolls" by The Legendary Pink Dots. ==="Crystal Japan" resemblance=About==Trent Reznor has been accused of ripping off the theme of "A Warm Place"from David Bowie's 1980 single "Crystal Japan". He did state that Bowie's album Low (1977) had the biggest influence in the making of The Downward Spiral, though 'A Warm Place'Lowdoes not contain " Crystal Japan." Some have claimed that what is heard is deceiving; that from a musical theory point of view, there exist significant differences between the structures of the two melodies.====David Bowie Interview====Reznor himself recognised the tenth track on accidental musical similarity in an interview with David Bowie: <blockquote>Reznor: There was one point when we were doing the record that I came up with this melody and I thought, "this is really good," and that I couldn't have written it myself. So I played it for The Downward SpiralFloodand he said "that's really good," and I said "that's gotta be somebody else's song." Bowie: It's from a gin advert I did in Japan!<br>Reznor: So I played it for a couple other people and said, "I think this is something off Low, this just sounds familiar...I don't know what it is." So we did it, record's out, and one day I was talking on the phone and I got Scary Monsters, which came out on Rykodisc finally. And so I put that on and it's got bonus tracks at the end.And I'm listening and this song comes on that, to my horror, it's the same..."Crystal Japan."</blockquote>

Consisting solely of synthesizer chords and melodies, it remains quiet, tranquil, and reflective throughout. Its structure is very simple, containing only few different chord progressions and a video couple of different melody lines. Beginning directly after the sudden ending of "Big Man With A Gun," the piece ends by crossfading with the opening samples of "Eraser." ===A Warm Place" played over (Instrumental)===Released by Reznor via his industrialremix.nin.com imageryaccount, this version is identical to the album version, except it does not contain the bits of "Eraser" fading in at the end===A Warm Place (Natural Born Killers edit)===Running Time: 2:58
===Natural Born Killers soundtrack===This version is essentially the same as the album version, but is shorter. Also, the straw sounds that lead into "A Warm PlaceEraser" was included on the soundtrack to the 1994 Oliver Stone film Natural Born Killershave been edited out. In the movie itself, the song served as a backdrop to the showdown between Mickey Knox and Jack Scagnetti after the first part of the prison riot scene.
==Interpretation=="A Warm Place" is regarded as the turning point of the album. It is the only instrumental, discounting the practically inaudible spoken words at the beginning. Its tranquil and soothing nature highly contrasts with the other tracks on the album, which all contain loud and angry parts.(Illum Tangendo)===Running Time: 3:14
The previous trackThis is the original version of the song, "but features new vocals and lyrics by Stella Katsoudas (aka Stella Soleil"), is arguably the most chaotic lead singer and main force behind Sister Soleil, added on the albumtop. The narrator asserts his power and domination over samples of tortured screamstrack was uploaded by Reznor to remix.nin. The last instance of com, where the description stated: "nothing can stop me now" in Reportedly scrapped from the soundtrack for the album is shoutedmovie Stigmata, and Stella began giving this out to fans a few years ago." It is perhaps his last straw (no pun intended)currently available from the Sister Soleil Bandcamp profile. At just over a minute and a half, Its title means "Big Man With A Guntouching him" suddenly collapses, and "A Warm Place" starts immediatelyin Latin. The added lyrics are: Water rolls down the skin like tiny beads Eyes close so that they might see Illum tangendo This sun is a star in someone else's sky Illum tangendo This moon is making someone cry Illum tangendo
The narrator has begun Stella Soleil on the track:<blockquote>Originally, I wanted to sign a drastic change in point of viewrecord deal with Nothing Records, which was owned by Trent Reznor and his ex-manager John Malm. He experiences I wanted to do this because, I was a moment of clarity huge NIN fan, but most importantly because I wanted Trent to produce my record. John Malm told my manager at the time, "Trent Reznor will never work with Sister Soleil. Stella is too pop for him." I was devastated. When I signed with Universal Records, Trent's manager had come out to Chicago, invited especially so that Universal could try to convince him to truly re-consider his situation in a way unhindered by intoxicants. Again, or perhaps enhanced by themI was told I was too 'pop' for Trent. I did something really stupid and risky then. Backed by I took the instrumental track of "a warm place" on the melancholy piano tune, he realizes who he has become actual release of 'A Downward Spiral' and brought it to Chicago Trax Recording studios and what he has donedumped it into pro-tools. He I had known subconsciously beforewritten lyrics and melody to it, and he had voiced i just, really wanted to see if it would work. I didn't want anything to jeopardize the varying attributes possibility of this working (for instance, if my lyrics really were "too pop"), so i broke the title words up into a kind of "The Becoming" being code, pronouncing the most obvious example)wrong syllables, but he etc. I had not yet come been listening to grips with a lot of Hildengard Von Bingen's "A Feather on the real consequences Breath of his character and actionsGod". A lyric that had stuck with me, on that recording, was "illum tangendo' which differ from is a very old form of Latin for the extreme views he had expressed previously. phrase "Warmtouching Him" contrasts with the cold. Without permission, indifferent quality I recorded vocals on top of machinesTrent's release. I didnt play it for anyone, which are sampled throughout until Bud Carr (the music supervisor for the Stigmata soundtrack) called me asking for submissions for the albummovie he was working on. This I think I just wanted somebody to acknowledge that, working with Trent, could still happen (even though, everyone, was telling me to forget it. i could not forget it.) I submitted 5 tracks to Bud. Ofcourse, he called me enthusiastic about 1 track, "a warm place" relate '. I got scared. I explained that I did not get permission to do this, it was only a kind of test for myself, it was stupid, etc....Bud insisted that he would get it to Trent and he would like it. I got a phone call about a week later, from John Malm saying that Trent wanted to speak to the womb or me. It did not sound good. I instantly regretted trying to go around him. About another week after that, Trent called me, and I remember spilling an entire gallon of milk on myself and the rise hardwood floors in body temperature during intercoursemy friend's apartment as I braced for what could have been, and rightfully so, where life beginsa very bad response. Apparently, the music is He said "I'm usually an inverted variation on the asshole about people trying to use my music in , but I was pleasantly suprised when I heard this. Did you want to come to New Orleans to re-cut this?"Closer. I spent about 4 days at his studios. I met a really cool guy named " and rave"The Downward Spiral'that engineered this version. Trent produced it. I had a blast. I stayed at the famous Pontchatrain Hotel, which sadly, I think, was washed away with Katrina. I cried when I left, but not until I was out of sight.[http://wwwIt was a kind of victory and a dream, all rolled into one.4degreezA couple years ago, someone told me that he posted it onto his remix site on nin.com. With the breathing straw sounds at the end of ==Live=="A Warm Place"made its live debut on [[2009/08/23 New York, it segues into the next songNY|August 23, "Eraser2009", which begins as an instrumentalat Webster Hall in New York City. The straw sounds possess a sort Much of nasty texture, designating a change in tone. The heavy percussion beats permeate throughout: this is the rhythm required by his train song's live incarnation consists of thought. As more sound layers are addedpre-recorded samples, such as the narrator becomes increasingly disturbed by what he had realized in "A Warm Place". He begins an inner-battle on the only consequences constant tremolo guitar that matter now: what he should do next. He denies certain arguments and favours othersruns throughout, evident by while the periodic addition band members man keyboards to recreate some of more layers of mocking guitarsthe other melodies. Briefly, The song was also performed at the instrumental calms down a bit, and he lists the obvious in minimalistic terms ("Hollywood Palladium nine days later on [verb] me... [verb] you"). At the end2009/09/02 Los Angeles, CA|September 2, he has chosen a strongly desire for an end to the dilemma ("kill me"). A remix of "Eraser2009" being called "Eraser (denial; realization)" is evidence of this.
"A Warm Place" The song was performed in a special remixed version during the NIN 2013-2014 touring cycle. Alessandro Cortini confirmed the unnamed live remix on twitter. More soft and "Eraser" may be considered two acts to one songsynthetic, it was played with the former being critical and necessary for the latternobody on stage except sometimes Cortini. When listening to This was done in a similar way again during the albumCold And Black And Infinite Tour, one should avoid skipping "A Warm Place" to abruptly listen to "Eraserwith Atticus Ross also playing.
=="Crystal Japan" resemblanceSample==Trent Reznor has been accused A barely audible message is heard layered under the track in the very beginning of ripping off the theme of song (repeating approximately 6 times.) The words were long rumored to be "A Warm Place" from David Bowie's 1980 single "Crystal Japanthe best thing about life is knowing you put it together"but this has been resigned to little more than an urban legend. He did state that Bowie's album Low (1977) had A user on SoundCloud isolated and filtered the portion of the biggest influence song in question, and while the making of speech still can't be made out, it'The Downward Spiral,s clear that the line mentioned above is incorrect.[httphttps://9inchnailssoundcloud.com/articlesuser-838359530/articles.php?id=7a-warm-place-tds-nin-d26-clip] though Low does not contain "Crystal Japan".
