It has been stated by Trent Reznor that this song is the first he ever wrote and is a rare treat to hear live. Following the Down In It single release, a music video was made. "Kinda I Want To" specifically uses this song's beat and drum patch in its bridge, while "That's What I Get" and "The Only Time" both use its recognizable melodic synth voice. ===Inspiration===In a 1994 radio broadcast biography of Reznor, it was said that "Down In It" was inspired by a relationship that had then recently ended for him with a woman named Krissy. Reznor has openly admitted that this song "was a total rip-off of 'Dig It' by Skinny Puppy." ===Song Credits===*Production: Trent Reznor, Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc*Engineering: Trent Reznor, Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc, Kennan Keating*Mix: Adrian Sherwood

Versions
Down In It
This version originally appeared on the Down In It single as the "Skin" mix, and would become the version that appears on Pretty Hate Machine. In chronological order, this is the first Nine Inch Nails song ever released to the general public. A different version was originally intended for the album, but TVT Records chose to use the "Skin" mix instead. Since the Down In It single had been released ahead of the album and this substitution had not yet been made, it was not referred to as the original or album version on the single.

Down In It (Skin)
Running Time: 3:46

The version that appears on Pretty Hate Machine is in fact the "Skin" remix, but it is not listed as such on the album. It also appears on Demos and Remixes with an unadulterated version of the "Terrible Lie" intro tacked onto the end, which fades out.

Down In It (Shred)
Running Time: 6:51

A mix that appears on both the Down In It and Head Like a Hole singles. It basically retains the original song with an extended intro and a long instrumental area that makes up the entire latter half of the song.

Down In It (Singe)
Running Time: 7:04 and 7:21
*A mix that appears on both the Down In It - appears on Purest Feeling as and Head Like a Hole singles. It's a mostly instrumental "dub" mix of the last track, differing from its offical counterparts as that it has an extended intro song with minimal vocals and strange screams warping and odd staticmixing of the beats with heavy bass emphasis. It also includes about 1 minute and 8 should be noted that this mix is actually 18 seconds of distorted clippings of longer on the song at Head Like A Hole (US) single than it was on the end as a finish to the albumDown In It single. Musically The reason for this is unknown, though it's extremely close probably due to the (Demo) version from the Head Like A Hole US singlefull sized LP Maxi Single.
====Song Credits====*Down In It (Demo) - appears on Head Like A Hole (US) as the last trackReproduced and remixed by Adrian Sherwood, it's extremely similar to the Purest Feeling version, except that it lacks the long intro and all the extra layering of it's Purest Feeling counterpart as well as the distorted outro. Most likely it's the definitive "original version" of Trent Reznor's very first song as Nine Inch Nails.Keith LeBlanc
*===Down In It (Demo IIClosure) - appears ===This is a live version found on the Purest Feeling II bootlegClosure home video. It's simply was filmed on the (Skin) version from Pretty Hate MachineSelf-Destruct Tour with an unadulterated version of the Terrible Lie intro tacked onto the end which fades outbetween 1994 and 1996 and cut to include different footage and accompanying audio from different performances.
*===Down In It (Demo IIIPurest Feeling) - appears ===Appears on the Purest Feeling II bootleg. Almost exactly the same as the Purest Feeling versionlast track, simply lacking the extra layering and sound effects as well differing from its official counterparts as the distorted outtro, though that it does retain the has an extended drumbeat intro with strange screams and is probably odd static. It also includes about 1 minute and 8 seconds of distorted clippings of the song at the end as a finish to the album. Musically it's extremely close to the "(Demo)" version from the Purest Feeling version was based uponHead Like a Hole US single.
*===Down In It (Demo IVDemos & Remixes Version) - appears ===Appears on the Purest Feeling II Demos and Remixes bootleg, running 4:35. ItAlmost exactly the same as the Purest Feelings an odd version with Trent whispering a good portion of his vocals an odd beat set compared to , simply lacking the others. It also includes faux-Oriental sounding synths which are noticably absent in any of extra layering and sound effects as well as the other versions of distorted outro, though it does retain the songextended drumbeat intro.
*===Down In It (SkinBig Whole Mix) - ===Appears on the mix from the [[Down In Demos and Remixes bootleg, running 4:09. It (halo)|Down In 's an odd version with Reznor whispering a good portion of his vocals under an odd beat. *Down In It (Shred) - a mix that appears on both the ==Live==As of Down In ItFragility 2.0 and , Reznor had stated that he didn't like the song as much as he used to, but during the later legs of the Head Like A HoleLive: With Teeth singles. Ittour, it seemed as if he's basically retains changed his mind about the original song with an extended intro and a long instrumental area that makes up the entire latter half of , playing it more as the tour progressed. The song, considered the "extended single version" usually features a lot of destruction from Reznor towards the song by someend.
*Down In It (Singe) - a mix that appears on both the ==Music Video=="Down In It" was the first Nine Inch Nails music video . It was directed by Eric Zimmerman and Benjamin Stokes, who also directed "Head Like A Hole singles. It's " The video depicts Reznor running through downtown Chicago and climbing to the roof of a mostly instrumental building, where he slips and falls to his death. Bandmates Richard Patrick and Chris Vrenna discover the body days later. An extended version of the video also exists, which is set to the "dubShred" mix . This was the first video to be met with controversy. To film the shots of lifeless Reznor, he was covered with cornstarch to create the song with minimal vocals illusion of decay and strange warping cameras were tied to heavy-duty balloons that were tied down. During the filming of these scenes, one of the balloons broke free and mixing of took the beats camera with heavy bass emphasisit, drifting some 200 miles before being found by a farmer in Michigan. It should be noted that this mix is actually 18 seconds longer on The camera was turned over to local police who, upon seeing the Head Like A Hole (US) single than raw video footage, assumed it was on a snuff film and the Down In It singleFBI was called in to investigate. The reason incident was even reported on Hard Copy and recalled in an interview for this is unknownSPIN magazine. ==Lyrics==
(Now I'm Down In It) (Now I'm Down In It) Kinda like a cloud, I was up Way way up, In in the sky And and I was feeling some feelings That you wouldn't believe Sometimes I doncan't believe in them myself And and I decided I was never coming down Just then, a tiny little dot caught my eye I it was just about too small to fall asleepsee But I watched it for way too long It and that dot was pulling me down
I was up above it
I was up above it Now I'm Down In It I was up above down in it I was up above it (Now I'm Down In It)
Shut Well shut up, So so what what? What does it matter now? I was swimming in the hate Now haze now I crawl on the ground And everything I never liked about you Is kinda is kind of seeping into me I try Try to laugh about it now But but isn't it funny How how everything works out ("I guess the joke's on me," she said)
(she said)
I was up above it
I was up above it (Now I'm Down In It) I was up above down in it I was up above it (Now I'm Down In It) I used to be So big and strong I used to know My right from wrong I never used to be afraid (I used to be somebody)
I used to havebe so big and strong I used to know my right from wrong I used to never be afraid I used to be somebody Something I used to have something inside Now it's just this hole Thatthat's open wide
I used to want it all
(I used to be somebody)
I'll cross my heart, I'll and hope to die But but the needle's already in my eye All And all the world's weight is one on my back And and I don't even know why What And what I used to think was me Is is just a faded fading memory I looked him right in the eye And and said "Goodbyegoodbye"
I was up above it
I was up above it Now I'm Down In It (Now I'm Down In It) I was up above down in it I was up above it (Now I'm Down In It)The fourth line is changed on the final recording to: I was up above it But I was up above watched it Now I'm Down In It I was up above way too long, it I was up above itpulling me down (Rain, Rain, Go Away)Backing vocals in Pretty Hate Machine version: (Come Again Some Other Day) (Rainrain go away, Rain, Go Away)come again some other day. (Come Again Some Other Day) (Rain, RainDuring the last shows of the Wave Goodbye Tour, Go Away) (Come Again Some Other Day) I was up above it I was up above it Now I'm Down In It NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA I the last line of the third verse was up above itchanged to:
I looked him right in the eye and waved goodbye
