From an interview with ''The Sun'', Trent Reznor said the following about the track:

I was trying to make something that leapt out of the speakers in a very umfamiliar unfamiliar way. At first listen, it might seem to be in praise of life but it's supposed to come off as an arrogant, "Fuck you. I've survived!" It also gets less triumphant and more reflective and melancholy towards the end.[http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/5091007/nine-inch-nails-interview.html]

Reznor went on to state, in another interview:
'''''Running Time: 3:19'''''

There were plans to release a [[Nine Inch Nails music videos|music video]] directed by Shynola, who had also done the video for "[[How Long?]]" by [[How To Destroy Angels]], but it was scrapped. A press release from Sony stated that the video would premiere on the same week that ''Hesitation Marks'' was released.[httphttps://www.sony.com/content/sony/en/en_us/SCA/company-news/press-releases/sony-columbiamusic-recordsentertainment/2013/everything-the-new-single-from-nine-inch-nails-is-streaming-now-on-npr-musics-all-songs-considered.shtmlhtml] Nothing materialized and a post to Shynola's Twitter account seemed to confirm that it wasn't going to happen.[https://twitter.com/SHYNOLAfilms/status/369015916102549504] Reznor eventually addressed the video in a response on a Reddit AMA session, stating that, "we made a video for 'Everything' with Shynola. I love those dudes, but for whatever reason it just didn't turn out that great and I shelved it. This is not an uncommon occurrence in my world."[http://en-us.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1s6mi5/im_trent_reznor_of_nine_inch_nails_ask_me_anything/]
Snippets of the video eventually appeared in reels posted to shynola.com, showing Reznor wearing a gray suit and glasses, and being chased or terrorized by an unseen entity.
