It is known for its upbeat and synthesizer-driven instrumentation, and casual lyric delivery, reminiscent of 1989's "[[Down In It (song)|Down In It]]." It was censored on radio, though it was obvious that the word "fucking" was being cut out.

It features a desk with a laptop (A 17" Mac PowerBook), speakers, a cup of coffee, a [[wp:Newton's cradle|Newton's cradle]] and a [[wp:Pin Art|Pin Art]] desk toy being brought to life and animated by the music.

This would continue for multiple tours, with "Only" appearing at most shows on the [[Performance 2007]] tour and almost every performance on the [[Lights In The Sky Tour]]. "Only" was not performed on the [[Wave Goodbye Tour]], and would make sporadic appearances in the [[NIN 2013-2014|2013-2014]] and [[NIN 2017-2018|2017-2018 touring cycles]]. The song was played with live drums until 2014, when Ilan Rubin began playing bass while the band played to a backing track.
