The piece consists of a dark and quiet introduction, featuring a beat with a wah effect, deep synthesizers, strings, and guitar. This section ends suddenly, quickly transitioning to a lone wah guitar melody. It is soon joined by a loud beat and percussive bass and guitar and the return of the guitar melody from the first section. This is followed by a buildup with a new distorted guitar riff, increasing in intensity until it gives way to a beatless reprise of the introduction. "The Mark Has Been Made" made its live debut on [[2000/04/03 Los Angeles, CA|April 3, 2000]]. Backed by watery and flaming visualsfrom Bill Viola, the live version is structure remained basically the same except for the ending: the first section before the wah guitar was shortened, and the buildup following it was more in-your-faceconcise. After shortened intro The last section saw the band erupting into an entirely new riff, one that seems to echo the ascending notes and rhythmic motif of "[[Somewhat Damaged]]" and a guitar breakdown by "[[Robin FinckThe Wretched]]", with Reznor wails ''waa-ooh'' over wailing on top. It segued directly into "[[Wish (song)|Wish]]." Musical notation of the climax and live ending bassline:<br>[[Image:Markhasbeenmade_end_score.png]] "The Mark Has Been Made" was performed at every show of the performance ends [[Fragility v2.0]] tour, but has not appeared since. It is one of a small number of live [[NIN]] songs to feature Reznor on that high note without the extended outro in the studio versionbass.
