It was released as a free download on May 5, 2008, a CD/DVD package on July 22, 2008 and contains the previously released Web-only singles "[[Discipline]]" and "[[Echoplex]]a vinyl on August 4th, 2008."

The 6 panel digipak will be is limited to 250,000 pieces worldwide, each individually numbered, and will include includes a DVD of NIN performing five live tracks from ''The Slip'' at rehearsals, a 24-page booklet, and an exclusive sticker pack. The CD is to be It was released on July 22, 2008 in the US and Canada, and released on July 21, 2008 in the UK and Europe.

The double gatefold vinyl release contains one 180-gram LP and a 24-page booklet. Unlike the CD release, the vinyl is not numbered. It will be was released in the US and Canada on august 5th, 2008, and in the UK and Europe on August 4th, 2008. On July 16, 2008 Trent posted two images of the physical product on nin.com. The post was entitled "The Beginning and the End". The first image shows Trent holding two copies of the album, hiding his face behind them. The second image shows the backs of both CDs. The one in back reads 1/250,000 and the one in front reads 250,000/250,000.

====Third Disc====On Amazon USJuly 16, ''The Slip'' is described as having three discs. A user named as Ronaldo Jones 2008, Reznor posted under two images of the discussion physical product on nin.com. The post was entitled "Hidden DiscThe Beginning and the End" that there is a third disc. The first image shows him holding two copies of the album, a CD, with more studio tracks named "hiding his face behind them. The Take Over"second image shows the backs of both CDs. This isThe one in back reads 1/250,000 and the one in front reads 250, however000/250, just a rumour000.

When asked The Limited Edition also comes with three 4" x 4" stickers, each representing one of 9 illustrations to verify the product infoalbum songs (printed in booklet or individually embedded in distributed media files), Amazon.com customer service replied with the following: "I understand difference that it is listed as 2 discnone of the stickers have the red lines. No further clarification was given. It The cover of the insert is possible a new piece of artwork that they are counting depicts several light gray lines on a dark background (the sticker pack same color as a discthe one for 1,000,000). Five lines, two on the ends and three in the middle, all travel straight downward from the top edge to the bottom. At some point Two more lines, in between the three middle and two outside, on each side, start straight downward, then slant inward, Amazon US was updated then travel straight downward parallel to show 2 discsthe other lines before they would intersect the ones in the middle. These lines combined form the usual NIN logo (second "N" being backwards).

The images posted ====Third Disc & 11th Track====There was some confusion about the physical release, mostly due to information on ninAmazon.com (US) and other online retailers. The product description indicated the release included three discs which were rumored to include an unreleased or “hidden disc” of unreleased studio tracks entitled “The Take Over”. Later on July 16, 2008 show the label track listing on the album which reads "limted edition CD + DVD"site was updated to show 11 tracks. It is difficult to make out the smaller print, but it doesn't appear to give any further clues to a 3rd discThe 11th track was entitled “Slip”.

== Relation to Year Zero Touring==Like ''For more information, see [[Ghosts I-IV]]'', the release of ''Lights In The Slip'' came as a surprise to most fans, who were expecting the next release to be a "''Year Zero 2''". Trent Reznor has indicated in interviews since the release that a ''[[Year ZeroSky Tour]]'' sequels was still in the works.

It remains unclear what portionsThe album (as well as ''Ghosts I-IV'', if which was released the same year) was supported by a tour that visited North and South America. This tour was notable for having the most ambitious production of anyNIN tour up to that point, using groundbreaking lighting and video technology. The middle portion of the set, referred to as the "Ghosts" portion, utilized some of that album's unorthodox (for NIN) instrumentation such as marimba, banjo and small percussion. == Relation to ''Year Zero'' ==Like ''Ghosts I–IV'', the release of ''The Slip'' should came as a surprise to most fans, who were expecting the next release to be considered as canon a continuation of ''[[Year Zero]]''.
