===Meaning===
The song is about having a belief in God while wondering about all the suffering (mostly personal/internal suffering) that one goes through in life, about wanting to believe and wanting to be hopeful but being constantly proved wrong by events in one's life. Its "everyman" subject matter and distinct melody make it one of [[Nine Inch Nails]]' better known songs and a staple of the live concerts. Another view is that is a cry for the real God. The world makes God seem like one who blesses you if you are good and Trent is angry at the way God is portrayed today. The way he is portrayed is a "Terrible Lie". He does not understand the real God and wants to know him rather than the world's verison of God.
