Filter was formed by [[Richard Patrick]] and [[Brian Liesegang]] after their departure from NIN, for which Patrick was the touring guitarist during the ''[[Pretty Hate Machine]]'' era. Liesegang soon quit Filter after their first record, leaving the band as the studio project of Richard Patrick and a revolving group of other members.
