NIN Returns
In early 2013, Reznor had announced that Nine Inch Nails would be touring again, despite having done a farewell tour in 2009. Several months later, he revealed that a new album entitled Hesitation Marks had been secretly recorded over the course of a year and that he had signed to Columbia Records. He cited his work with film scores and How To Destroy Angels as the source of his revitalized interest in a new direction for NIN. The album was released on September 3, 2013 and was acclaimed by both fans and critics, many of them coming to view it as Reznor's best work since The Fragile. It incorporated more atmospheric and layered sound than had been customary in recent works. Reznor stated that the album was a thematic sequel to The Downward Spiral, being something of a belated epilogue to that album's story and showing the life arc of its protagonist.
The world tour that supported the album was released on September 3the most ambitious one yet, picking up where 2008's Lights In The Sky tour had left off. ===The Trilogy and Beyond===
In 2016, Ross became a full-fledged member of Nine Inch Nails and a host of other score music from Reznor and Ross was announced. In June, the pair released a standalone track for a short film about NASA's Juno Mission. This was followed by the Before The Flood Soundtrack (a collaboration with Mogwai and Gustavo Santaolalla) and the Patriots Day Soundtrack. Delivering on a promise made in 2015 for new music from NIN the following year, the Not The Actual Events EP was officially released on December 23, 2016. In 2017, it was revealed that Not The Actual Events was the first in a trilogy of related releases and the second installment, Add Violence, was released on July 21. Reznor and Ross scores for The Vietnam War as well as the short film The Black Ghiandola followed.
Cold And Black And Infinite... and beyond
The third installment of the aforementioned trilogy, Bad Witch, was released on June 22, 2018. The trilogy was supported with the NIN 2017-2018 touring cycle, including a back-to-basics trek with The Jesus and Mary Chain (named the Cold And Black And Infinite Tour) that saw the live debuts of "And All That Could Have Been" and "The Perfect Drug". That year also saw a partial Reznor and Ross score for Mid90s. The following year saw a flurry of activity from Reznor and Ross, with scores for Bird Box (including an extended box set version), Waves and HBO's Watchmen series.
Scores for The Woman In The Window, Soul, and David Fincher's Mank were announced for 2020. In late 2019, it was revealed that Reznor and Ross had completed their avant-garde score for The Woman In The Window but that it had been scrapped due to a change in the film's direction. On March 26, 2020, two more volumes of the Ghosts series (Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts) were released in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. On November 7, 2020, Reznor and NIN were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Reznor had previously inducted The Cure, one of his influences.  In 2021, Soul repeated the feat of The Social Network, earning Reznor and Ross both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for best original score, and Reznor and Ross collaborated with Halsey on her fourth album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power. NIN embarked on a tour in 2022 to make up for canceled tour dates from 2020 and 2021. The aesthetic for the tour was mainly a continuation of the Cold And Black And Infinite Tour. During this same time period, Reznor and Ross made appearances in various capacities on albums by Danny Elfman, Antonio Sanchez & Bad Hombre, and Fever Ray. Scores for Bones And All and Empire Of Light were announced for 2022.
Today, Reznor is happier than he's ever been. He feels that he has found his calling in life and has found joy in creating music. Although he admits he could very easily relapse into his old ways, because he has been there, he has said he never wants to go back. He and his wife currently reside in California with their children and dogs.
