Changes

Live
A difference from the studio version for many years was noticeably louder drums that are persistent in the choruses. The keyboard part is usually played by the bassist (Danny Lohner, Jeordie White, and Josh Eustis). However, in 2009 and since from 2014to 2022, Ilan Rubin also plays played keyboard and the song is was played with no drums. During the 2013 Festival Tour, Rubin played cello while Alessandro Cortini played electronic drums.
On at least one live performance, Reznor sang the unused lyrics in the Pretty Hate Machine booklet at the end of the song.
The version from the Bridge School Benefit, like all the songs from this particular performance, is performed entirely with string instruments and Reznor on vocals. No synthetics were used at all during this performance, but the arrangements seem to correlate with extended live version of the song played in concert by Nine Inch Nails.

A newly reworked version was performed during the Peel It Back Tour in 2026, also featuring a snippet of "Stripped" by Depeche Mode tagged onto the end.
