Designer Church Lieu gave some background on the development of the concept:
<blockquote>Trent Reznor wanted to explore themes of transhumanism, simulated realities, and societal breakdown with this EP.
Drawing on my philosophy degree and general familiarity with science fiction, I researched related concepts and developed ideas for a mysterious, dystopian setting that would inform the production design for the two music videos from Add Violence: THIS ISN’T THE PLACE and LESS THAN.
After completing the concept stage, I wrote the non-lyric copy and created the “wireframe” style graphics in the lyric booklet, called the Physical Component.
Afterwards, I wrote the label text for the Panel K prop from THIS ISN’T THE PLACE, and created two 3D models for LESS THAN.[https://www.churchmakes.com/mywork/addviolencenin]</blockquote>
The curious "scratch marks" seen in the main iteration of the ''Not The Actual Events'' cover artwork also faintly appear in the upper right corner of the ''Add Violence'' cover and on the back cover of ''Bad Witch'', seemingly lining up to become an eventual bigger picture. It is worth noting that the digital edition cover artwork juxtaposed with the amazon.com commercial release bears subtle differences.
