It was both announced and digitally released as a free download on March 26, 2020, during the ''#STAYHOME'' initiative in the wake of the [[wp:COVID-19 pandemic|COVID-19 pandemic]].
It was released alongside ''Ghosts''' third installment, ''[[Ghosts VI: Locusts]]'', making them the only NIN releases to date to be put out simultaneously. They are also the only proper NIN album releases to be digital only.
The typeface used on ''Ghosts I-IV'', Eureka Sans Caps Light, is also used on this album and ''Ghosts VI: Locusts''.
