In a Q+A session before the [[2017/09/15_Chicago,_IL|2017 Riot Fest show]], it was revealed that "She's Gone Away" was written specifically for ''Twin Peaks: The Return'' and . It was later revealed that an early version of "[[This Isn't The Place]]" was originally presented to [[David Lynch]] who rejected it, asking for something edgier.[https://www.fangoria.com/original/trent-reznor-on-twin-peaks-the-return-part-8-five-years-later/] saying, "I want something mean and ugly. Something that makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck."[https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/tron-ares-covers-revealed/] [[Nine Inch Nails]] (billed as "The Nine Inch Nails" and consisting of [[Trent Reznor]], [[Robin Finck]], Mariqueen MaandigReznor, [[Atticus Ross]], [[Alessandro Cortini]] and Joey Castillo of [[Queens Of The Stone Age]]) appeared in an episode doing a mimed performance of the song, which also appears on the soundtrack for the new series. The track makes two hidden references to "[[Reptile]]": one in the ''Not The Actual Events'' physical component (where the "Reptile" lyrics are layered underneath the lyrics of "She's Gone Away"), and one in embedded (but unsung) lyrics in the Apple Music release of "She's Gone Away" (the lines "she spreads herself wide open to let the insects in" and "she leaves a trail of honey to show me where she's been").

"She's Gone Away" made its live debut, and so far only performance, at the surprise [[2017/07/31 New York, NY|Webster Hall]] show of the [[I Can't Seem To Wake Up 2017]] tour. This was the only performance until it was brought back as a remixed/mash-up version in collaboration with [[Boys Noize]] on Act III of the [[Peel It Back Tour]]. The song was performed semi-regularly as an intro to Act III, using the intro to "[[Vessel]]" and Boys Noize's song "Girl Crush" as the base for the remix. In addition, when Boys Noize played "Girl Crush" as a part of his opening set, he would interpolate elements from "She's Gone Away" into the song as well.
