The album marked a new style of lyric writing for Reznor:

While it may only be a coincidence, the album title may be inspired by ''Datapanik in the Year Zero'', the title of an EP and box set by Pere Ubu (itself being a reference to the 1960s sci-fi film ''Panic in Year Zero!''). Reznor was listening to Pere Ubu during the ''With Teeth'' period, and their song "[[Final Solution]]" was covered by NIN with [[Peter Murphy]] during the [[With Teeth: Summer Tour 2006 Radio Collaboration]].
