==Inspiration: Conflict with TVT Records==Released in autumn 1992 on the heels of a major disagreement between '''''Broken''''' (also known as '''''[[Trent Reznorhalo numbers|Halo 5]] and his label''''') is an EP released on September 22nd 1992. Although not technically so, ''Broken'' is usually considered [[TVT RecordsNine Inch Nails]], ''Broken'' was a second major departure from release after ''[[Pretty Hate Machine]]''since it consists entirely of new material. The EP was recorded in secret, in order to avoid interference from [[Trent ReznorTVT Records]] said that during the long, arduous tour for his debut album, the songs became more aggressive when played by a band, compared to the process of studio recording. The stage often turned violent as a result of everyone releasing pent-up frustration and anger on their instruments. Thus, ''Broken'' sounds a lot more abrasive with the increased prominence of distorted guitars.

===Bonus tracks=Inspiration==The release of ''Broken'' was originally packaged in followed on from a fold-out digipakmajor disagreement between Reznor and his record label at the time, TVT Records, containing and the influence of the conflict is evident in multiple aspects of the six tracks on record. After the credits in the packaging, a regular CD]and an additional three-inch mini CD with the two remaining songs (line reads "Physicalno thanks: you know who you fucking are" and followed by "Suckthe slave thinks he is released from bondage only to find a stronger set of chains."). After This is most likely directed towards TVT Records' Steve Gottlieb, who refused to allow Reznor discovered that some unscrupulous record store owners were removing out of his contract, resulting in a legal battle between the mini CD and selling it separately, ''Broken'' was re-released as two parties. A direct reference to Gottlieb appears in one CDof the [[Nine Inch Nails music videos|music videos]] for "Gave Up", with where the bonus songs words "hiddenFUCK YOU STEVE" can be spotted on tracks 98 and 99, respectively, with tracks 7-97 each containing a second of silencecomputer screen.

"Physical" is Trent Reznor has also stated that during the [[Pretty Hate Machine Tour]] the songs grew more aggressive when played by a live band compared to their studio counterparts. Violence on-stage also became a common feature at their shows as a cover result of the Adam & the Ants song "Physical (You're So)"band venting pent-up frustration and anger on their instruments. Consequently, originally released on the ''Kings of the Wild FrontierBroken'' LPsounds much more abrasive and harsher with the increased prominence of distorted guitars, amongst other things. In 1995==Audio Texture==On this EP, there are louder mixes and more distortion on every instrument, including a classic Mellotron MKIV (originally owned by John Lennon), Nine Inch Nails performed which can be heard most noticeably on the track "PhysicalGave Up" live with Adam Ant for two nights in a row.
