Although not technically so, Broken is usually considered TVT RecordsNine Inch Nails, Broken was a second major departure from release after Pretty Hate Machinesince it consists entirely of new material. The EP was recorded in secret, in order to avoid interference from Trent ReznorTVT Records said that during the long, arduous tour for his debut album, the songs became more aggressive when played by a band, compared to the process of studio recording. The stage often turned violent as a result of everyone releasing pent-up frustration and anger on their instruments. Thus, Broken sounds a lot more abrasive with the increased prominence of distorted guitars.

These comments are more than likely directed towards TVT Records' Steve GottliebAkzidenz-Grotesk Black, who refused which was also used to let Reznor out of his contract, sparking legal battles between create the two partiesNothing Records logo.

Peter Christophersonalso compiled these videos along with an alternate version of " – 4Gave Up" into a very violent and extreme long-form video known as the Broken Movie. ==Inspiration==The release of Broken followed on from a major disagreement between Reznor and his record label at the time, TVT Records, and the influence of the conflict is evident in multiple aspects of the record. After the credits in the packaging, a line reads "no thanks:44#you know who you fucking are"Help Me I Am In Hellfollowed by " – 1:56#the slave thinks he is released from bondage only to find a stronger set of chains."This is most likely directed towards TVT Records' Steve Gottlieb, who refused to allow Reznor out of his contract, resulting in a legal battle between the two parties. A direct reference to Gottlieb appears in one of the music videos" – 5:21#for "Gave Up" – 4:08#"Physical, where the words " – 5:29#FUCK YOU STEVE"Suck" – 5:07can be spotted on a computer screen.
Trent Reznor has also stated that during the Pretty Hate Machine Tour the songs grew more aggressive when played by a live band compared to their studio counterparts. Violence on-stage also became a common feature at their shows as a result of the band venting pent-up frustration and anger on their instruments. Consequently, Broken sounds much more abrasive and harsher with the increased prominence of distorted guitars, amongst other things.===Bonus tracks=Audio Texture==Broken was On this EP, there are louder mixes and more distortion on every instrument, including a classic Mellotron MKIV (originally packaged in a fold-out digipakowned by John Lennon), containing the six tracks which can be heard most noticeably on a regular CD]and an additional three-inch mini CD with the two remaining songs (track "PhysicalGave Up" and . Reznor said he wanted the album to be "Suck")an abrasive, hard-to-listen-to thing... After Reznor discovered I wanted to make a record that some unscrupulous record store owners were removing the mini CD and selling first time you hear it you don't like it, but you might want to hear it separatelyagain, but by the third time it's pretty cool. By the fifth time, you really like it and possibly by the tenth time you'Broken was re-released as one CD, with the bonus songs "hidden" on tracks 98 not sick of it and 99, respectively, with tracks 7-97 each containing a second of silencenow it all makes sense."
"Physical" is a cover of the Adam & the Ants song "Physical (YouIn an interview with 're So)", originally released on the 'Keyboard Magazine'Kings of the Wild Frontier LPin 1994In 1995php?id=548, Nine Inch Nails performed "Physical" live with Adam Ant for two nights in a row. After Trent introduced Adam Ant and Marco Pirroni Reznor elaborated on the second night, Adam Ant proclaimed to the audience, "ItEP's nice to be on stage with the best fucking band in the world."unique guitar textures:
<blockquote>"Suck" Broken, for example, had a lot of that super-thick chunk sound. Almost every guitar sound on that record was written by Pigfaceme playing through an old Zoom pedal, whose ever-changing lineup once included Reznordirect, and then going into Turbosynth. Then I used a couple of key ingredients to make it sound unlike any real sound in the world, and layered about four of them together. The original version appeared By then, it wasn't a year earlier on Pigfaceguitar anymore. It's Gub albuman awesome sound."</blockquote>
In an interview with Alternative Press in 1993[http://www.theninhotline.net/archives/articles/manager/display_article.php?id===Personnel===*Martin Atkins546 - Drums*Trent , Reznor - Keyboards, Programming, Producer*Chris Vrenna - Drums, Programming, Beats, Artistdiscussed the writing and instrumentation:
==Videos==The music video for <blockquote>"Gave Up" features I tried doing an album that I actually just wrote on guitar rather than my tried-and-true method of a young Marilyn Manson playing drum machine and keyboards. So with the exception of 'Happiness in Slavery' all songs were written on guitar. I was gonna make it totally stripped down to guitar, appearing bass and drums but as I started it I realized I could easily fall into another trap. What might sound interesting to me - because I'm not used to it - may sound like a garage band to the world. So we just took the three instruments and sampled 'em, fucked with 'sansem, processed them. It's kind of overboard, we did go crazy. It' makeup and eye contactss kind of dense, too dense. This was filmed before Reznor signed Manson to Nothing RecordsIt's over analyzed - every song has 20 different melodies that you won't hear the first five or ten times you listen, or maybe never."</blockquote>

==Press sheet"Caution: Not for use with mono devices" ==The press sheet released for Broken had a note from Reznor on itA warning about mono devices appears in the liner notes. The note reads as follows, with Trent Reznor gave the original formatting preservedfollowing explanation for this warning:
<div align=centerblockquote>Broken was secretly recorded from March "Regarding the warning for 'mono' devices... Without getting too far in detail, a scientific property of sound is its 'phase'. When recording music in stereo, you're supposed to August 1992 be aware of its phase. If not, certain parts of the sound will disappear when it's played in a variety mono. So, we discovered that by messing around with the phase, we could make elements of locationswithout the permission music stand out rather oddly. (remember Q-sound? -it's based on the same type of principle) So...certain songs on 'broken' we mixed out ofphase (because we felt like it) BUT... The songs don't sound right on mono devices (like some radios or TVs). Has anyone heard 'happiness in slavery' on the record labelto ensure radio? I heard it could fester without Divine Interventionnow They just leave me alone on KROQ in LA and the snare drum was gone through most of the song. (and let me do yes, it kind of destroys the groove!) So, basically, that's what I wantthat means."</blockquote>
