Although it is an EP, it is usually considered to be the band's second major release after ''[[Pretty Hate Machine]]'' since it consists entirely of new material. It was followed later in 1992 by ''[[Fixed]]'', a companion EP of remixes of the songs on ''Broken''.

==Inspiration: Conflict with TVT Records==Released in autumn 1992 on the heels of a major disagreement between '''''Broken''''' (also known as '''''[[Trent Reznorhalo numbers|Halo 5]] and his label''''') is an EP released on September 22nd 1992. Although not technically so, ''Broken'' is usually considered [[TVT RecordsNine Inch Nails]], ''Broken'' was a second major departure from release after ''[[Pretty Hate Machine]]''since it consists entirely of new material. The EP was recorded in secret, in order to avoid interference from [[Trent ReznorTVT Records]] said that during the long, arduous tour for his debut album, the songs became more aggressive when played by a band, compared to the process of studio recording. The stage often turned violent as a result of everyone releasing pent-up frustration and anger on their instruments. Thus, ''Broken'' sounds a lot more abrasive with the increased prominence of distorted guitars.

The influence It was followed later that year by ''[[Fixed]],'' a companion EP of [[Remixes|remixes]] of Reznorthe songs on ''Broken.'s conflict with his former label ' The typeface used on ''Broken'' is evident in the album(and ''Fixed''s packaging. After a long list of credits, it says, "no thanks: you know who you fucking are" followed by "the slave thinks he ) is released from bondage only to find a stronger set of chains." These comments are more than likely directed towards TVT Records' Steve GottliebAkzidenz-Grotesk Black, who refused which was also used to let Reznor out of his contract, sparking legal battles between create the two parties[[Nothing Records]] logo.

These videos were included on the second part of the ''[[Closure]]'' VHS set. [[Peter Christopherson]] also compiled these videos along with an alternate version of "Gave Up" into a very violent and extreme long-form video known as the ''Broken Movie''. ==Inspiration==The release of ''Broken'' followed on from a major disagreement between [[Trent Reznor]] and his record label at the time, TVT Records, and the influence of the conflict is evident in multiple aspects of the record. Consequently, ''Broken'' sounds much more abrasive and harsher with the increased prominence of distorted guitars, amongst other things. ==Audio texture and themesTexture==On this EP, there are louder mixes and more distortion on every instrument, including a classic Mellotron MKIV (originally owned by John Lennon), which can be heard most particularly noticeably on the track "Gave Up". The lyrics are less of a departure; for the most part the themes involve angst, control and dependency struggles. Reznor said he wanted the album to be "an ultraabrasive, hard-fast chunk to-listen-to thing...I wanted to make a record that the first time you hear it you don't like it, but you might want to hear it again, but by the third time it's pretty cool. In 1995Ian Copeland, Nine Inch Nails performed "Physical" live with Adam Ant for two nights in a row. When recording music in stereo, you'Brokenre supposed to be aware of its phase. If not, certain parts of the sound will disappear when it's played in mono.
