In 2003, a friend suggested that Maandig audition for a band that was looking for a female vocalist. She ultimately got the role of backing vocalist in West Indian Girl, a psychedelic indie-rock band. Her creative input in the band was minimal, but she became a face associated with the band. In the fall of 2008 she accepted an offer from ''Playboy'' magazine to be featured as the "Becoming Attraction" for the January 2009 issue. The feature helped to create some buzz around both her and the band.
