Guys, when adding new wreckage/shard entries, try to stick to the format that's being used in other entries:

wreckage: wreckage
shard: shard

:Let me add, I think we need to include behind each wreckage if there is a text excerpt or not. If there isn't one, we should make a point to state that to create a sense of completeness. Further more we should dilligently make sure all text excerpts are found and cataloged. I will catagorize all the banned books (and perhaps why) and the excerpts of them from the site on the World of Year Zero Fact Sheet. --Velvolver 09:01, 3 April 2007 (PDT)

Mailstrom
dug around and posted what i could find on the site so far. haven't tried any bruteforcing yet, i might do that at work if i can cut some time between things. (work up at a major registrar, so, lots of web tools readily on hand) --Killjoy 01:01, 12 March 2007 (PDT)

If anyone has a photo of the buttons given out in Minneapolis it would be greatly appreciated.Leo3375 15:39, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

Trinity Episcopalian
mentioned in the email communication, most of the sites when mentioning things capitalized like this, or with a legit sounding company/organisation name, seem to be provisions for new websites. haven't had luck yet. any help would be great! --Killjoy 01:01, 12 March 2007 (PDT)

Consolidated
Could there be more mailboxes accessible on Consolidated, perhaps hinted at by the captured email chain? I tried some obvious ones but got nothing. Perhaps someone else is more inspired than I at guessing possible mailboxes to try? Or maybe this is just another rathole? --Mr z 09:23, 12 March 2007 (PDT)

Following the thinking, is it possible some of the username/passwords from other sites (or hidden text on other sites) may access if used as damage/shard inputs, I'm going to try and collect some of it and see if anything pops up, same with the mailbox idea! --killjoy 09:38, 12 March 2007 (PDT)

maelstrom
the name "mailstrom" is a play on the word maelstrom

which can be defined:
<pre>
maelstrom \MAYL-struhm\, noun:
1. A large, powerful, or destructive whirlpool.
2. Something resembling a maelstrom; a violent, disordered, or turbulent state of affairs.
</pre>

Case Insensitive
I just did some minor experimenting with the existing known Wreckage/Shard combos, and it appears they're case insensitive. That shrinks our search space. --Mr z 10:23, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

"Wreckage" equals classification?
The first wreckage/shard pair has "gallows" as the wreckage. In that opening statement, we also read: "Whether or not you agree with what was done to the informer after we intercepted this email..." implying they did something bad. They likely killed (maybe they hanged?) the informer. The second successful wreckage/shard pair has "gasoline" as the wreckage. In that shard, we find a mother who cannot get to her child in part because her old gasoline-only engine seized up and she couldn't complete the mandatory child-rearing classes she was assigned. We currently have a wreckage, "sickle", that lacks a shard. If sickle's a reference to Communism, then perhaps there's a clue somewhere around Be The Hammer? --Mr z 13:11, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

:Speaking of links between wreckage names, note the definition of "atropine":

:A poisonous, bitter, crystalline alkaloid, C17H23NO3, obtained from belladonna and other related plants. It is used to dilate the pupils of the eyes and as an antispasmodic. (courtesy The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition)

:So atropine directly links back to 2 other wreckages, "belladonna" & "bitter", as well as being a possible reference to Opal (its effects on the eyes) &/or Parepin (antispasmodic = calms certain organs down, in a sense...ok, maybe this one is a stretch ;). (For the hell of it, Skinny Puppy fans may also note that another word for "antispasmodic" is "spasmolytic". Probably no connection to the ARG, but hey.) And in keeping with the death-related imagery of many of the wreckages, atropine is named for Atropos, the Fate in Greek mythology who decides how we all die.

:Not going to dissect (heh) all the other wreckages here, except to point out that "wetwork" is a slang term for assassination (especially by government intelligence operatives), and "corrida" means "bullfight" in Spanish. Vestanpance 03:31, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

Hints in URLs?
The images unique to the gasoline/uuu891 page all begin with "rb5x1zzz". This is too long to be a shard if all shards are 6 characters. (That seems to be a common theme, across both The Mailstrom and U.S. Wiretap.) But is that the case, or is just a randomized filename to make it harder to find through brute force search? --Mr z 13:11, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

I updated the main page with my findings on the image file names; the above e-mail and the original are the only ones where I couldn't figure out the pattern. All of the rest seem to conform to the l33t naming scheme. Could be a clue, or it could just mean that they only implemented the scheme after the first two.

By the way, does anyone know of any tools capable of backtracing html pages that include the found images belonging to unfound pages? --Lastgunslinger 21:17, 22 March 2007 (PDT)

UUU891
For the fun of it, i ran this through google and got an intersting .gov result; a list of dØ files from Fermilab (a particle accelerator facility here in Illinois)

It's probably all unrelated, but they are searching for the Higgs Boson ("God Particle") and most of their research has implications on time travel. (as well, some diagrams of their work resemble the SBI Pilgrims Diags.)

Puzzle away! --killjoy 16:58, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

::: hmm, looks like they're doing plenty of homework, there's reference to Fermilab on the Pilgrims/SBI pages (where the double slit diagrams and such are lurking around.) amusing, i was just reading about all this stuff a few months ago, now they're using it to make a story! --killjoy 09:26, 16 March 2007 (PDT)

On the slander wreckage page, whatever we call them... one of the screen names is HeMingWei, which is btw, a obvious link to Hemingway... I don't know if it's important, but the Tower, Star, Moon, Sun, and Judgement are references to Tarot cards. The Tower is a sudden, cataclysmic downfall of false institutions or beliefs (with the implication of leaving room for soemthing new to be built). The Star is hope, healing, and renewal (not necessarily immediately, though, more like, unexpected help will be coming). The Moon is illusions, imagination, madness, intuition, dreams, inspiration from the unconscious. The Sun is vitality, glory, triumph, truth, intellect. And Judgement is rebirth, total change, accepting the past and leaving it comepletely behind. Mikhyel 16:10, 24 March, 2007

I know that this may be a dumb question, but i'll ask it anyway.
Can we get any pics of these buttons, to have a little clue what they look like, beside the text descriptions?--Guts 08:05, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

The Maelstrom: Marshall McLuhan/ Edgar Allen Poe?
Possible connection, perhaps--

"The Descent into the Maelstrom" is a short story by Edgar Allen Poe; it also influenced the twentieth-century thinker Marshall McLuhan, whose studies of the effects of mass media on the human psyche were highly controversial in the mid 1900s.

Here's an excerpt from the article about Poe's short story on Wikipedia:
"It is couched as a story within a story, a tale told at the summit of a mountain climb. The story is told by an old man who reveals that he only appears old - "You suppose me a very old man," he says, "but I am not. It took less than a single day to change these hairs form a jetty black to white, to weaken my limbs, and to unstring my nerves." The narrator, convinced by the power of the whirlpools he sees in the ocean beyond, is then told of the "old" man's recent fishing trip with his two brothers. Their ship was caught in the vortex. One brother is pulled into the waves; the other is driven mad by the horror of the spectacle. At first the narrator only sees hideous terror in the spectacle, and feels helpless. Then, as a moment of revelation, he sees that the Maelstrom is a beautiful and awesome creation. Then, observing how objects around him are pulled into it, he deduces that "the larger the bodies, the more rapid their descent" and that spherical-shaped objects are pulled in the slowest. He abandons ship and holds on to a cylindrical barrel until he is saved several hours later. He tells the narrator the story without any hope that he will believe it"

The movie/documentary "McLuhan's Wake" also talks alot about the "maelstrom" of mass media, modernity, and technological advancement-- McLuhan himself warned of the consequences of these new phenomena on humanity.

Any thoughts?

Speculation re: the name of the Nerochip...
EDIT: Whoops, didn't see the section on the Nerochip before I hit the Talk topic. Sorry about that.

Spore shard taken from ETS board
Just so the geniouses at ETS stop calling me a plant, I noticed that "spore" was added to the list, but the content was not update, so I went to the site, excited to see something new, and put up the content here. Actually, Nineinchtool included the password. I'm not trying to take any "plantish" credit. Lulu 08:31, 1 April 2007 (PDT)
:Our apologies Lulu. We would like to know were pQw2pP came from. It's not on a button from my list at ETS, and as far as I know, no one's figured a shard independent of the buttons. It's great to get new info, but if anyone knows some sort of method of deriving shards please share. Knowing this might help match the remaining shards and wreckages. MadCactus 11:00, 1 April 2007 (PDT)
::It's no big deal. But I would be interested in knowing any methods for finding the final combinations, too. Lulu 15:57, 1 April 2007 (PDT)
::: Maybe it was also found trough brute force like the new belladonna shard (i did mention it when i added it).S3phiroth 09:42, 2 April 2007 (PDT)
:::: I'd doubt it was found through brute force, brute forcing shards is one thing, but forcing wreckage is far too time consuming (on the order of 100 years or so). Where's this NineInchTool guy anyways, he's not the same user that's on ETS. ItsJustDave 14:51, 3 April 2007 (PDT)

Cleaver Wreckage
Well, how did they get away with out airing that on the year zero TV screen. that picture is great though. how would they explian it. it's quite disturbing when you think about it.

Daytona 500 email
I'm not the definitive Nascar expert, but that certainly doesn't look like the shape or organization of the current Daytona 500 track. Its actually a picture of Dover international speedway, The Monster Mile. Probably from September of 2006.

Here is the same picture:

Just put four tilde's "~" to sig. For some reason tony thought it would be a good idea to remove all the easy code buttons. Daytona Florida is most likely underwater in YZ, most likely they moved it. Good observation. --Velvolver 11:37, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

------------------------

Thanks velvolver - I think Daytona is usually in early Feb in YZ and the Hurricane Boaz is supposed to be in Feb sometime as well, it may be that the race was before the flood. Also it doesn't say the Daytona 500 was the race, I mis typed, it just says it was a race at the Daytona track. Perhaps the Presence was the precursor to the hurricane.

wreckage venom
Hi, this is my first time posting, not sure if i'm out of line...
from what i've seen, there is no mention on this page of where the word fragments on wreckage venom come from. Have i missed it somehow? I'm not sure, but i have a gut feeling that it's from burroughs (william S.) somewhere. just a hunch, really. in any case, his work would fit well into year zero context.

Not quite related, but interesting
The terminology "wreckage" and "shard" resonated with me oddly when I bumped into this website named Shards Poems which are poems about war. Not part of the ARG and not related to NIN in any way. But chilling nonetheless. Some of the poems sound like they could have come from Year Zero. This one rings well w/ God Given. --Mr z 16:08, 12 April 2007 (PDT)
