Ahead Of Ourselves
"Ahead Of Ourselves" is the second track on the 2018 LP Bad Witch. It and "Play The Goddamned Part" were made available to listen to on May 19, 2018, at special listening stations provided at "The Physical World" ticket presale for fans in attendance.
- Bad Witch
This is the only known version.
"Ahead Of Ourselves" debuted live on June 16, 2018 at The Joint in Las Vegas, the only song on Bad Witch to be performed live before its official release ("God Break Down The Door" had been released as a single beforehand).
The line "celebration of ignorance" from the song finds its origins all the way back to the 2005 With Teeth lyric poster, in the form of an early version of "The Warning." The line is also found in the book The Demon-Haunted World: Science As A Candle In The Dark by Carl Sagan, but it is not known if there is a legitimate connection.
Everything all figured out Like it was meant to be We’re on the precipice (I can feel it) We’re on the precipice Created us in his image Better be proud of his work That is if he existed (not so sure anymore) That is if he existed And we just can’t help ourselves And we just can’t help ourselves And we just can’t help ourselves And we just can’t help ourselves (I don’t think that’s me) Obsolete Insignificant Antiquated Irrelevant Celebration of ignorance Why try change when you know you can’t? Did you ever get that feeling? Man I can’t seem to shake it Not quite as clever as we think we are Knuckle dragging animal When we could have done anything We wound up building this we deserve With illusions of enlightenment With our snouts in the dirt With our snouts in the dirt Obsolete Insignificant Antiquated Irrelevant Celebration of ignorance Why try change when you know you can’t? We got ahead of ourselves We got ahead of ourselves We got ahead of ourselves We got ahead of ourselves
At the end of the track there are two whispered lines that are not in the liner notes, that seem to be:
I'm not so sure anymore I'm not so sure anymore
