Career
Patrick has stated that he began working on his own music, and attempted to secure a record deal, during the 80s. He briefly met Trent Reznor in Cleveland in 1985 when his band, The Akt, was invited to open for the Exotic Birds. They later met again at Pi Keyboards and Audio, where Reznor worked. He was then briefly in a band called Kollaps, prior to NIN, which also included Reznor. After The Akt disbanded in 1989, Reznor asked him to listen to some of the songs he'd recorded, including "Head Like A Hole" and "Down In It", and asked him to become the touring guitarist in NIN, which he did for two and half years. He can be seen in the music videos for "Down In It", "Head Like A Hole", "Wish", and "Gave Up". His only recorded contribution—a droning guitar sound—can be heard at the end of "Sanctified" on Pretty Hate Machine. He chose to leave the band during the recording of The Downward Spiral in 1993 due in part because he felt that he was unable to Reznor focus on his own burgeoning musical creations while working as a hired gun for Nine Inch Nails. He also was not allowing him any creative input or musical contributionshappy about the amount of money he was being paid, and was offended when John Malm suggested that he work as well as often taking a lot of onstage physical abuse from Reznorpizza delivery driver to supplement his income. Patrick was nicknamed "Piggy" during his time with Nine Inch Nails. According to fellow NIN collaborator and future Filter bandmate Brian Liesegang, Trent Reznor was very upset when Patrick left the band and wrote the song "Piggy" about it shortly thereafter. The Filter track "Captain Bligh" was originally rumored to be about Reznor, but Patrick has since debunked this. Though their relationship was semi-acrimonious in the past, Reznor and Patrick are on good terms. Patrick made a live guest appearance with NIN in 1996 for one date of the Nights Of Nothing Tour. He (along with Danny Lohner, Charlie Clouser and Chris Vrenna) also joined NIN onstage for six songs at the Cleveland show of the NIN 2022 tour, one of the songs being a cover of Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot".
