In 2009, a new message explaining the closing of The Spiral was posted on the homepage:
<blockquote>as of march 31st 2009, the spiral will close its doors for good. any spiral members that are interested in archiving personal content may do so before march 31st. the status of nin.com e-mail accounts will not change for the time being, but all other components of the spiral will be taken down.</blockquote>
Even after the closure of The Spiral, the Spiral message board remained online and accessible, so long as you retained your login cookie on your web browser. No new logins were allowed. Within a year, however, the message board was shut down also.
