The journal talks about Jerry's life since the point he started living at in the country on his grandparent grandparents' property on an old trailer of his, until he comes back to Bedford which he had left before. His family had to leave their house at bedford "Bedford" because his father lost part of a leg and after that his mother became unemployed, so they couldn't pay for the house rent. During his time at his grandparent's, he and his sister are schooled at home, and they start drinking water from a well. Since they're off the [[Parepin]], they start becoming more aware of things and start becoming angry at the current state of their lives. His sister steps on a nail and contracts tetanus and was taken back to Bedford, where Jeremiah drinks Parepin-treated water again. He eventually succumbs to the sense-numbing effect of the water, attributes his time off Parepin as a "test of faith," and barely shows emotion at his sister's hideous death from Tetanus. His mother gets another job, and they stay in the city.
