Gary Talpas was the original art director for Nine Inch Nails from 1989 to 1999. He designed the iconic NIN logo, as well as most of the sleeve artwork for NIN releases. He also served as art director more widely for Nothing Records, as well as working on merch and catalog design for Object. He was succeeded as NIN art director by Rob Sheridan.

Talpas also appeared briefly in an early live NIN performance lineup. According to Trent Reznor, they "needed an extra body" on stage. Even though he didn't know how to play the keyboard, they had him mime playing it.
