On this day a new album entitled Hesitation Marks (released on September 3, 2013 on Columbia Records) and the US leg of the Tour called Tension get announced. Support acts for the tour are Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Tomahawk.    Additionally the first new song of the album named Came Back Haunted is made available for listening via various outlets. This is the first new NIN material since the release of theme for Tetsuo.  
Trent Reznor announces via Tumblr  and Pitchfork  that he - over the past year - has worked with Alan Moulder and Atticus Ross on a new NIN album which is already finished and will be released later in 2013.

Trent Reznor announces via Facebook  that he - over the past year - begun work with Beats by Dr Dre, the Interscope Records/Dr. Dre-affiliated electronics company best known for its signature line of headphones, on various projects .
Zane Lowe world premieres the new How To Destroy Angels single Keep it together on his radioshow at BBC1. At the same time the song gets uploaded (and available for download) via Soundcloud . The song is accompanied by a video .
After a pre-orderable item of How To Destroy Angels popped up on amazon.com on 9.18.2012 , Trent officially announces 3 days later details on the upcoming How To Destroy Angels release. He again signed with a Major Label, namely Columbia Records. On November 13 2012 a second EP, named An Omen, will be released. There will also be videos, live shows and an album afterwards (early 2013).  Furthermore Rob Sheridan now seems to be a full band-member as can be implied by the new band photos. 
Trent is announced as the writer of the Theme Song for the computer game Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which sees a november release date. 
Via a leaked red band trailer which showed up on Youtube, but was subsequently deleted, for the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - which Trent reznor scored at this time - information was acquired that Trent is doing a Led Zeppelin cover (Immigrant Song) with singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's called Karen O. A snippet of the cover is played during the trailer.
Trent denies working on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This was a recent rumour floating around several news-sites. In the same post he confirms that Work on the Year Zero TV-series is still in progress. 
Trent talks about some ongoing projects. He states that his work on the How To Destroy Angels Full Length release started "last summer", meaning the summer of 2010. He also says that mixing of the album will happen "this summer", meaning the summer of 2011, opting for a fall release (fall 2011). It turns out that this release date does not hold and that a release in the first quarter of 2012 is realistic. Furthermore Trent says that he is also working on NIN music (probably meaning The Fragile Deluxe reissue) and "film work" (meaning The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack). Finally he mentions talks about scoring and even playing a role in the upcoming movie called Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which a few days later gets denied.

NIN track Theme For Tetsuo: The Bullet Man is released on the soundtrack for the film Tetsuo The Bullet Man. This marks the first new NIN material since The Slip which was released in May 2008.

Trent announces that he is back in the studio working on new music. Most likely for the then still unknown How To Destroy Angels project . There are also mysterious pictures posted on the nin.com webpage .
Trent Reznor released the dates for North American club performances which will be the final NIN tour. Four nights in NYC, two nights in Chicago, and four nights in LA.
Trent Reznor tweeted about that last set of NIN tour dates at small venues.
Trent Reznor received government recognition for helping Eric de la Cruz in the form of proclamations from the US House of Representatives (three Congressman in total), the US Senate, the NYS Governor, the NYS Senate, the NYS Comptroller and the Suffolk County Legislature.
Trent Reznor was presented with a Special Achievement Webby for Artist of the Year at the annual Webby awards.
Reznor offers three different donation packages on nin.com in order to raise money to help Eric De La Cruz pay for a heart transplant. The different priced donation packages range from attending soundchecks to spending time with the band before a show and watching the performance from the side of the stage. Trent has won the Webby Award for Artist of the Year. The award recognizes the free release of The Slip and NIN's increasing level of online connectedness with fans.

NIN/JA 2009 (ninja2009.com) went live at approximately 9:15 AM PST. From the new site you can download the new NINJA 2009 Tour Sampler including new music from Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, and Street Sweeper (Now called Street Sweeper Social Club). The new NIN songs included are the long awaited studio recordings of "Not So Pretty Now" and "Non-Entity."
Trent Reznor announced via nin.com that Street Sweeper (a new project featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and The Nightwatchman and Boots Riley of The Coup) would be the opening act for the NIN/JA tour.

Tapulous released the NIN edition of their popular iPhone/iPod Touch rhythm game, TapTap Revenge. The game includes 13 NIN tracks from The Slip and Ghosts I-IV, multi-player mode, and NIN-themed graphics.

A collection of photographs by Rob Sheridan taken from the Lights In The Sky: Over North America 2008 summer tour have been made available for purchase exclusively at frcphotos. Photos are available in two sizes: 11” X 14” and 8” X 10”.

Wired is running a feature about the Lights In The Sky tour that focuses on the technological aspects of the show. Lights In The Sky (also known as Seed 5) was released via nin.com for free download. The EP is a promotional release containing songs from bands that will support NIN on their upcoming tour, Lights In The Sky Over North America. Additional material, including wallpapers and web graphics, is included in the download. 
It is revealed that Rich Fownes has left the band and has been replaced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen.
The Slip (also known as Halo 27), the eighth and latest studio album from Nine Inch Nails, was released today as a free download, and contains the previously released Web-only singles "Discipline" and "Echoplex." 
The album is available for download in a variety of formats, including MP3, lossless FLAC and high-quality WAV files.
Robin Finck is announced to again be a member of Nine Inch Nails (original post). There is a calmly overall lineup refreshment as well, which is evident at NINs Youtube profile, with Josh Freese, and Alessandro Cortini returning to the live performance incarnation of NIN, as well as a new member, Rich Fownes.

A radio leak of "The Beginning of the End" was recorded and put into MP3 format.

The highly anticipated Closure DVD is leaked by a mysterious user on The Pirate Bay called seed0 () who is very likely to be from the NIN camp, because at the same time Trent made a post on his blog on The Spiral pointing at the release as a christmas present ("12/21/06 : Happy Holidays! This one is a guilt-free download. (shhhh - I didn't say that out loud). If you know what I'm talking about, cool.").  The leak makes sense since the official release of the DVD was pushed back for years and Trent therefore finally released it his way.
Some days later (12.23.06) the second disc of the aforementioned DVD followed via the same user seed0.  Even one week later (12.30.06) the so called Broken Movie was released the same way (see also: Broken Movie#Release). 
A user called seed0 () - who is most likely someone from the NIN camp - uploads The Singles, Deep Cuts and Quiet Tracks, each belonging to the The Definitive NIN compilation, on The Pirate Bay. ,  and .
